Hardware

This is a preliminary list of the core components of Caligula

CPU

Manufacturer: Sun Microsystems

Model: SPARCserver 1000

Features:

512MB RAM

2 system boards

4 SPARC processors

40 Mhz SBUS internal architecture

4 - Serial Ports* (2 per board)

2 - SCSI-1 Ports

2 - Ethernet Ports

1 - Wide SCSI HD68 Port**

2 - Redundant Hot-swappable Power Supplies

*There is no video card in this machine. I/O is accomplished via serial port with a WYSE terminal and keyboard.

**The Hard Drive array connects to the CPU using a Wide-SCSI High Voltage Differential interface. High voltage SCSI devices are incompatible with the more common Low-voltage Differential and Single-ended SCSI designs. HVD SCSI, rendered obsolete under the SCSI-3 specification, was primarily found on enterprise-class servers or minicomputers. The high voltage signal permits interface cables up to 25 meters in length.

A good overview of SCSI standards can be found here at hardwarecentral.com.

Storage

Caligula's secondary memory consists of a disk-array enclosure with the following features:

Manufacturer: Trimm Technologies Ltd.

Model: RE04500

Features:

Long Chassis design holds 7 HDD modules

RAID Ready Design

Redundant Power for cooling fans

2- hot-swap cooling fans

Drive Modules

Manufacturer: Trimm Technologies Ltd.

Model: RM205

Features of each module:

Dedicated 40W Power Supply

Hot swappable

3.5" Seagate Barracuda 5GB HDD (W-SCSI HVD)

The SCSI drives are connected in serial, and an additional I/O port on the enclosure allows for more than one array to be used. However, the last port on the chain MUST be terminated for proper operation.
