Sling Blade [Billy Bob Thornton]
Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, John Ritter, Dwight Yoakam, J.T. Walsh
Released: 1996
****
Sling Blade starts off with a chilling and beautifully executed monologue by Billy Bob
Thornton. "Some people call it a sling blade. I call it a Kaiser blade." These are the words
said by life long mental hospital patient Karl Childers. In viewing this brilliant feature, we
come to realize that the story hardly centers around the sling blade. The story is surrounded
with heartfelt friendship, and a great tale of human angst. Karl finds himself a free
man after being kept inside for most of his life. He befriends a local boy, and comes to realize
the boy's pain and torture. Karl isn't that swift a fellow, but he is just so gosh darn likeable.
Karl sets off to right the wrong that has been set upon his best friend.

Sling Blade is Billy Bob's first critically acclaimed film. Boy did he hit the mark. There
is no genius to his formula. It is fairly simple. Characters that are real. People we care
about and sympathize with. Not at one moment was I the least bit bored with the slow paced story;
I was always genuinley interested in the characters at heart. Billy Bob has gone onto make other
great movies, including A Simple Plan. Hopefully, for the pleasure of movie-goers, he will continue
to do so.
