Oh thank heaven. Finally a movie that treats teenage angst and drama with a
truthful angle. Ghost World does not take the normal route of going through
the cliched events of high school. It focuses on what most teenagers actually
worry about...life after high school. Enid is a depressed, lonley, but quirky
teenager. She doesn't do much, but is interesting nonetheless. Most of her time
is spent with her friend Rebecca reading lame personals out of the local paper.
The story starts off with Rebecca and Enid responding to the ad as a joke. The
person who is on the other end of the ad is Seymour (Steve Buscemi). He has a love
of old jazz records, and most importantly, hasn't had a girlfriend in years.
He closes himself off to the world, surrounding himself with his collectables.
Enid becomes infatuated with Seymour at first just as friends, but as the story
progresses, we come to find out she wants more than friends.

Ghost World is a story with characters that we actually care about. Steve Buscemi,
a personal favorite of mine, is a shoe in for the role of Seymour. You do not doubt
for one second that he is an introverted loner. Thora Birch does not look back with
her role, and she plays it brilliantly. A great follow up role to American Beauty.
Ghost World is one of those rare treats in the teenage years drama category that
make those trips to see Josie and the Pussycats and Can't Hardly Wait.
