Madame Curie was born Maria Sklodowski in Poland in 1867. Her parents were teachers, and she learned at an early age how important being a 'nerd' truely is. Her mom died while Curie was young, and her father was caught teaching polish (it was a crime in russia). Once curie got into science she had nothing but a few ideas and a small greasy lab. A friend introduced her to a young scientist (Pierre Curie) who had some room to spare. Not only did Marie move all of her equipment into his lab, Marie and Pierre eventually got married. A friend the couples (Henri Becquerel) had been toying with newely discovered properties of the element uranium. Henri got them hooked on the research too. Marie started investigating the phenomenon she called "radio-activity" for her research. Curie checked other elements to see if they were radioactive. She found thorium, and a different source of radiation in a mixture she called pitch-blend. Pitch-blend was way more powerful than either thorium or uranium. Working together the Curies isolated the radioactive source in pitch-blend (they named it radium). Marie and Pierre won the Nobel Prize in Physics (they shared it with their friend Becquerel like a good couple should). A while later Marie realised that what she had found was not 100% radium, but she got the element itself after tedious work. For this work, she was given the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911. Marie was shocked, finding that radiation killed human cells. She thought "Well, if it could kill healthy human cells.. I bet it could kill Greasy Diseased human cells". She followed this venture for a long time. And, well..A long story short, she made the X-ray machine and died because she got radioactive poisoning. How sad. Her work summed up is this; Without the hours she put in we might not have decent modern cancer treatments, atomic clocks, or even the computer! But, with good comes bad.. She probably was the god of the Atomic bomb. Jorgan, Hugh. "woodrow." woodrow. 9 Feb 2005. 09 May. 2005 . WIKI, PEDIA-. "Answers.com." Answers dotcom. 10 Dec 1999. Wikipedia. 09 May. 2005 .
