Mark Brenner was an average man. He held a 9-5 middle-management office job in a small high-technology company, had two sons (Daniel, captain of the football team, and Aaron, an honors student), and was married to his high-school sweetheart, Rebecca Levitan.

After working late one evening, Mark came home to find the door to the house open. Inside the house he found the headless, disemboweled corpses of his sons. His wife was nowhere to be found, but all of her things were still in the house. Depressed, his performance at work declined. At the end of the week, his boss called him up for a meeting.

Once in the office, Mark sat down at his boss' desk. In the room were two others, both in lab coats. With a grim look on his face, Mark's boss laid out the situation: Mark's attitude and lack of productivity were bringing down company morale.

Mark was now faced with a choice: either accept a transfer to R&D, or be fired... which was why he found himself, only hours later, on an operating table in a secure lab several floors below ground level. When he awakened, the lab techs told Mark exactly what they had done to him...

The Gateway Project

Because of his deep depression, the scientists at R&D figured Mark would make an excellent test subject for their latest brainchild, a gateway to the Netherworld, which would allow its user to harness negative energy. The main portion of the device was implanted into the center of the brain, while his forearms were replaced with cybernetic prosthetics in order to provide a focus for the dark energies. Other portions of his body were reworked as well, allowing them to interface properly with the implant. In order to test their device, the scientists sent Mark to D.A.T.A. and had him registered as a superhero.

Test Phase

Since becoming a hero, Mark (now known as "Noctus") has continued to refine his ability to control the implant, and some developments surprise even its designers. For example, Noctus can absorb life-force out of a foe into himself. The implant siphons (presumably) a portion of the opponent's soul into Noctus' body and causes his wounds to heal. Unfortunately, the process is extremely draining.

Several secondary implants have also begun interfacing with the gateway implant. In Noctus' legs, the researchers at R&D had installed improved muscle fibers as well as shock absorbers. Inner ear enhancements were also made, and now Noctus is capable of leaping long distances, as well as minor acrobatic feats. Perhaps more interesting, however, are the implants seated in the chest area. They act as an amplifier for the negative energy harvested by the gateway, and allow Noctus to fade into his surroundings; this effect can be achieved with a high degree of control.
