Cat Peering Anxiously Into a BubbleJet Printer ASCII
TEXT
EDITORS

Homepage

NOTE: These are DOS and W31 EDITORS not word processors. To configure, write batch files, create compiler and assembler source code, and do other maintenance for an OS we need an editor that will save the text in ASCII format and add no formatting codes to the text. MSDOS EDIT.EXE isn't terrible to use but older versions of MSDOS didn't have that utility and some don't like it (me).

  • Freeware & Shareware Downloads

  • QED.EXE © - Small DOS editor, not QEDIT the macro editor but a useful/small foot print utility.
  • TEDPLUS.COM - PC Mag DOS 'Tiny Editor' with find function and other new functions in this update.
  • MEDIT.EXE © - Macro DOS editor comparable to QEDIT.
  • JOE.EXE - Macro DOS editor comparable to QEDIT (freeware).
  • PFE.EXE - Win3x `Programmer's File Editor' opens multiple large text files. Extensive tookit. Quite popular with W31 users. There is an option to put those tabs at the bottom for each file that I like so very much too!
  • ELVIS v1.8 - DOS clone of the VI *nix editor. This is the one recommended to me by professionals who use VI on UNIX at work and need a good port of VI for their home computer.
  • NOTESPAD - I know, you hear about these replacements for NOTEPAD all the time. This one opens multiple files with tabs at the bottom of it's window to flip them. Very handy feature. Does macros and other things but the tabs really hooked me. Drop in replacement after you rename it to NOTEPAD.EXE. (220K archive)
  • XPDF - Not an editor, but a converter of Adobe PDF files to normal text. Versions for DOS, Win32, Solaris, and Linux at this server in this same directory.
