A childless couple, Barbara and Adam, move to the country, but are soon killed in a car accident. Their ghosts return to their
home where they find the "Handbook for the Recently Deceased."
This "handbook" lets them know that they are dead, and also comes in handy when they learn that they can continue to live
in their house, even though a new family is moving in. The new owners are a
strange group, including the overpowering hipster mom Delia, her meek husband
Charles, and their morose daughter Lydia, who becomes friends with the ghosts.
Though the threesome attempt to scare Delia from ruining the house with
redecoration and her unpleasant personality, they fail. As a last resort, they
call upon the services of the bioexorcist Beetlejuice.
