Things for kids

A-Paper Machiete

What you need:

newspaper

1/2 cup of flour

3/4 cup of water

bowl for mixing

spoon

acrylic paint, in various colors

paint brushes

blown-up balloon to use as a mold

creativity

   What you do :

1-Mix the flour and a half cup of the water together in the bowl with a spoon. Keep the leftover water in case the paste gets too thick. It should be kind of runny.

2-Once your paste is the right thickness, tear the newspaper into strips and soak them in the mixture.

3-Squeeze off the excess mixture and place the strip on the balloon.

4-Repeat, placing more strips on top, so that you make a bowl shape.

5-Make sure your strips overlap because this will make it stronger. About 5 or 6 layers should be enough.

6-Leave it to dry overnight.

7-When it is dry, pop the balloon, and there's your bowl.

8-Paint designs on your bowl with acrylic paints.

9-You can use your bowl for a lot of things like holding fruit or change.

B-Modeling clay

To make modeling dough, you and a helper can mix

1 cup flour,

˝ cup salt,

and 2 teaspoons cream of tarter.

In a separate bowl,

mix 1 cup water

and 1 tablespoon oil.

Add a few drops of food coloring if you want colorful clay. Work together to combine the two mixtures, then you can cook it over medium to low heat (225 to 275), stirring until it feels like mashed potatoes.

Let it cool before you touch it and then knead the mixture a little. Store your dough in a covered container.

Many children like to get their hands into modeling dough. It's an acceptable way of getting "messy," especially if you help by setting limits (like keeping it on a cookie sheet or on a layer of newspapers on the table). Pounding on dough can even help on a day when your child is feeling angry.

C - Play Dough

This is an excellent rainy-day activity. It's a great way to entertain kids in a safe and fun manner.

Ingredients:

2 Cups of Flour

2 Cups of Water

2 Tablespoons of Vegetable Oil

2 Tablespoons of Cream of Tarter

1 Cup of Salt

Food Coloring

Directions:

1) Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large sauce pan.

2) Add the food coloring to the water.

3) Mix the colored water and oil into the dry ingredients.

4) Cook on the stove on medium heat and stir constantly.

5) When it feels like stiff mashed potatos, take it off the stove and knead it for about 2 minutes.

6) Store it in something like a tupperware container or a zip-lock baggy when the kids are finished playing with it.

A Couple Notes:

The playdough is non-toxic, so its OK if they eat it, but its not going to taste great. So advice them not to taste it.

If the playdough gets on things like counters, carpet, couches, etc., then a little warm water will remove it if you do it immediatly. The carpeting and couches will be the most difficult to remove the dough, so try to avoid it from getting on there.

The dough will wash out of clothing, but food coloring will not if it is spilled directly on something and left there for more than a couple minutes.

This should only be done under supervision, the kids should not be doing it alone. To get back to Pooh Page hit the back button.
