Regardless of your denominational affiliation or theological beliefs, please understand that this web page is not against you personally. This information is here to help you and encourage you to “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith” (II Cor. 13:5), “the faith of Jesus” (Rev. 14:12), “the Saviour of the world” (John 4:42), “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (Heb. 12:2). “But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:4-7). “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” (Gal. 2:16). “But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.... For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” (Gal. 3:22,26). “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Eph. 2:8,9). Please read the following with an open mind and let “the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge” speak to your heart (Eph. 3:19); “and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21). “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD:” (Isa. 1:18)

Vatican Policy and The American Civil War

For centuries, the standard policy of the Vatican was the suppression of all non-Catholic religious liberties in America. The Jesuits played a major role in undermining the faith of Protestant Christians. The Jesuits, or the society of Jesus, so called, founded by Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556) in Paris in 1534 was a society known for their cunning in propagating their principles and using craftiness and deceit to persuade unsuspecting souls. The fact that Jesuitism and deceit are synonymous is telling in and of itself. Webster's Dictionary defines Jesuitism as “Cunning; deceit; deceptive practices to effect a purpose;” (An America Dictionary of The English Language, 1828, Vol. 2, 1860, 1911; 1913). Webster's Universal Dictionary says: “The power of the organization lies largely in its close scrutiny into affairs, its secret methods.... For the means it has sometimes employed to accomplish its purposes in statecraft it has been condemned as unscrupulous in intrigue and deceptive in purpose, tending to the subversion of legitimate government.” (Webster's Universal Dictionary, 1904). The policy of suppression of religious liberty would be responsible for prolonging one of the bloodiest civil wars in history, the American Civil War (1861-1865). When many in the southern states were becoming weary with the war, and some were ready to dis-arm and put an end to the bloodshed, the Pope's actions in 1863 would directly contribute to the continuation of the war for nearly two more agonizing years. Historian William Grady, who has done extensive research on the subject, wrote:

“The average Christian student of American History is unaware of how close Leo's [Pope Leo's] predecessor [Pope Pius IX] came to dissolving the Union [the United States of America] during the Civil War years. For a sobering insight as to how the Vatican can interfere with foreign governments, consider the chaos incited by a single letter sent by Pius IX to Jefferson Davis in 1863. Responding to correspondence from Davis, dated 23rd September, 1863, the Pope's reply was formally addressed, "To Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America, Richmond." This subtle salutation gave the Confederacy a badly needed vote of confidence from ‘His Holiness.’ What followed next is quite unnerving. Whereas the desertion rates of the Northern Armies showed 16 percent for Germans, 0.5 percent for native Americans, 0.7 percent for all others, the Irish figures sky-rocketed to 72 percent! ... The above figures indicate that out of every 10,000 Irish enlistees – almost all Catholics – there were over 33 times as many desertions as among all the other groups put together. The point to be made here is not only the historical one – that the Vatican intervened in the agonies of the American Civil War – but that, in a different context and in a different way, it can do the same in today's conflicts, be they military or political. And even more so in the future.” (Final Authority, Dr. W.P. Grady, 1993, pp. 225,226) (See also America Or Rome, Which? 1895, p. 88)

The reason for the rebellion on the part of the South was the long-cherished purpose of Southern politicians and statesmen to establish a Southern Confederacy on the basis of human bondage. This principle was announced by Alexander H. Stephens, the Vice-President of the Southern Confederacy, in his infamous Cornerstone Speech of March 21st 1861 at Savannah, Georgia: “Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea [of the equality of races]; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.... It is, indeed, in conformity with the ordinance of the Creator.” (Alexander H. Stephens in Public and Private, 1866, pp. 721, 723).

“Romanism encouraged the South because the corner-stone of the Southern Confederacy rested upon human slavery. How the colored people of the South or the North can forget this and unite with the Roman Catholic church is a mystery. It is the theory of Rome that the toilers should be kept in ignorance. Gentlemen for the palace and serf's for the field, is the spirit of Romanism, incarnated in every despotic government where its power is supreme. Louis Napoleon, the ally of Pius IX, expected to build up in Mexico a Roman Catholic kingdom, and unite it with the Southern States, and so establish a Latin Empire in the new world.” (Washington In The Lap of Rome, Justin D. Fulton, 1895, p. 122).

That the Roman Catholic church supported the southern states' political and moral views on slavery is indisputable. The Southern Confederacy's own Vice-President, Alexander H. Stephens, professed in a letter to Thomas W. Thomas dated 9th May, 1855, “But I think of all the Christian denominations in the United States, the Catholics are the last that southern people should join in attempting to put under the ban of civil proscription. For as a church they have never warred against us or our peculiar institutions [slavery]. No man can say as much of New England Baptists, Presbyterians, or Methodists; the long roll of abolition petitions with which Congress has been so much excited and agitated for years past, come not from the Catholics; their pulpits at the north are not desecrated every Sabbath with anathemas against slavery. And of the three thousand New England clergymen who sent the anti-Nebraska memorial to the Senate last year, not one was a Catholic, as I have been informed and believe.” (Alexander H. Stephens in Public and Private, 1866, p. 464).

In the summer of 1863 New York City was the scene of violent riots. Mobs, comprised mainly of foreign-born Roman Catholic Irish immigrants, burned and pillaged stores, hotels, saloons, even residences. Known as the New York City Draft Riots of 1863, the mayhem was instigated by a number of pro-Catholic news paper writers and politicians and a quasi-military secret society known as the Knights of the Golden Circle. The immediate pretext for the disturbance was the alleged oppression of the draft. Arson and plunder, maiming and murder, were their business and recreation. Men and women were clubbed to death in the streets, hung on lamp-posts or butchered in their houses. The infuriated rioters laid in ashes an asylum for colored orphaned children; and the terrified inmates, who fled in every direction, were perused, and some of the poor children were cruelly beaten and maimed. During the five days of rioting no fewer than a thousand people, many of whom were Negros, were permanently maimed or lost their lives, and the property loss has been estimated to cost from $1,500,000 to $5,000,000. Rioters made a sport of mutilating black men's bodies, sometimes sexually. The mobs beat, stomped, stoned, mutilated and hanged innocent whites and blacks, as crowds cheered for Jefferson Davis, the Confederate president. The federal government investigated the riots, but did not act upon any of its findings. The names and identities of those responsible for starting the riots were never publicly disclosed. (Our Country: A Household History for All Readers, 1878, p. 1630; A Pictorial History of The Civil War Years, 1967, p. 134)

The papacy's desire to convert the whole of America to Catholicism was well known by many in the nineteenth century. It is a significant fact that the first shot in the American Civil War was fired at Fort Sumter by the Roman Catholic Pierre Beauregard. And it is a significant fact that every man connected with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln was a Roman Catholic. Unfortunately, most historians today rarely, if ever, mention the fact that Rome, through the Jesuits and other secret oath-bound organizations –Knights of the Golden Circle, Order of American Knights, Son's of Liberty– advised and directed the leaders of the southern states throughout this period. President Abraham Lincoln was personally against slavery, as were the vast majority of Americans. “[T]he restoration of the Union and the abolition of slavery” were Lincoln's prime objectives. In a letter dated July 18, 1864, Lincoln stated that “Any proposition which embraces the restoration of the whole Union, and the abolishment of slavery, and which comes by and with an authority that can control the armies now at war against the United States, will be received and considered by the executive Government of the United States....” (The Life and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln, 1884, p. 248). Again in 1864 Abraham Lincoln said, “This civil war seems to be nothing but a political affair to those who do not see, as I do, the secret springs of that terrible drama. But it is more a religious than a civil war. It is Rome who wants to rule and degrade the North, as she has ruled and degraded the South, from the very day of its discovery. There are only very few of the Southern leaders who are not more or less under the influence of the Jesuits through their wives, family relations, and their friends.” Lincoln said that “if the American people could learn what I know of the fierce hatred of the generality of the priests of Rome against our institutions, our schools, our most sacred rights, and our so dearly bought liberties, they would drive them away to-morrow, from among us, or they would shoot them as traitors.” (Fifty Years in the Church of Rome, Charles Chiniquy, 1889, pp. 696, 697). President Lincoln was murdered April 15, 1865. Some of the people who were alive at the time of Lincoln's murder witnessed first hand the physical evidence and the verbal testimony of those involved in the crime. And many of these people, the witnesses of history, justifiably held strong convictions that the papacy played a role in Lincoln's assassination. (See The Jesuit Connection, and The Suppressed Truth, and Assassination of President Lincoln, and Rome's Responsibility for the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, 1897, and The suppressed Truth About the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, 1922, and America Or Rome, Which? 1895, and Washington In The Lap of Rome, 1888) (See also The Catholic Church Helped Nazi War Criminals Escape: History Channel Documentary)

It is a common but erroneous belief that America's Founding Fathers were pro-slavery. History reveals that “Among the enemies of slavery could be counted "Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Sherman, Livingston, Patrick Henry, Madison, Hancock, Morris, St. Clair, the Randolphs—John and Thomas. Add to the above the rest of the signers of the Declaration, backed up by the great document itself. We defy and challenge the world to show one single patriot of the Revolution who was in favor of Slavery, or advocated its extension. Some desired its gradual extinction, but not one can be named who spoke in favor of its remaining as a permanent Institution.” (History of The Plots and Crimes of The Great Conspiracy to Overthrow Liberty in America, p. 6). At a Convention assembled in Philadelphia in 1787, a Constitution was drawn up, thus laying the foundations of our National Government. The U.S. Constitution did not create slavery, for it existed, as an inheritance from Great Britain, long before the Revolution. “Notwithstanding the Revolution had been fought and won on the doctrine of equal rights, yet, when the colonies formed a national compact, they set aside the principles on which their liberties had been gained.” (Ibid, p. 7). Representatives Pinckney and Rutledge of South Carolina attended the Constitutional Convention, where Pinckney remarked that if it prohibited the slave trade South Carolina would never accept the Constitution. The article was so altered as to allow the importation of slaves until 1800, but this was too short a time. Pinkney moved to strike out 1800 and insert 1808, and the motion was carried. Section IX, article 1st, of the Constitution stated that slavery was to be phased out over a period of twenty years, or until 1808. (Ibid, p. 8).

“In the original draft of the Declaration of Independence, the slave trade is denounced as piratical warfare. These denunciations were struck out of the Declaration of Independence in compliance to South Carolina and Georgia, who had never attempted to restrain the importation of slaves, and who, on the contrary, wished to continue it.— Writings of Thos. Jefferson.
“In the South Carolina Convention, Judge Pendleton observed that only three states, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, allowed the importation of negroes. Their reason for so doing was that during the last war they lost vast numbers of them, which loss they wished to supply.
“It was notorious that the postponement of immediate abolition (of the slave trade) was indispensable to secure the adoption of the Constitution. It was a necessary sacrifice to the prejudices and interests of a portion of the Southern States.3d Story Com. Con. 1828, 1829.”
(History of The Plots and Crimes of The Great Conspiracy to Overthrow Liberty in America, pp. 8, 9). (see also America's Founding Fathers - The Enemies of Slavery)

Most Catholics know little or nothing about the true history of their church, as the church hierarchy have done its best to conceal these disturbing facts and re-write its own history. Even Roman Catholic scholars confirm this fact. Commenting on the papacy's policy to suppress facts and control the flow of information, Roman Catholic historian John Acton (1834-1902), commonly known as Lord Acton, wrote:

“The Council instituted the index of prohibited books, which is the fourth article in the machinery of resistance.... The idea of drawing up a comprehensive list of all that no man should read commended itself to the zeal of Caraffa, having been suggested to him by Della Casa, who had published such a list at Venice.... A congregation was appointed to examine new publications, to issue decrees against them as required, and to make out catalogues from time to time of works so condemned. Besides this, censures were also pronounced by the Pope himself, the Inquisition, the Master of the Sacred Palace, and the Secretary of the Index, separately. In this way an attempt was made to control what people read, committing to oblivion the works of Protestant scholars, and of such men as Machiavelli, and correcting offensive texts, especially historians. Several such corrected editions were published at the time, and many things were reprinted with large omissions.” (Lectures on Modern History, ed. John Neville Figgis and Reginald Vere Laurence, London: Macmillan, pp. 119, 120). (See also 20th Century Atrocities of the Roman Catholic Church)

It is quite possible that some of our readers may think that the Roman hierarchy in America do not approve of the policy of their church in interfering with the freedom of speech and of the press, and that they would repudiate it if they dared to do so. We therefore reprint from the article on “Censorship of Books,” in the Catholic Encyclopedia (Vol. Ill, pages 519-527), edited by American Catholics and published in New York City, some paragraphs upon this subject: —
From the beginning and at all times in principle, the church adhered to the censorship. . . .
When the church, after the era of persecution, was given greater liberty, a censorship of books appears more plainly. . . .
The religious disruption of Germany had not yet begun when Rome took precautionary measures by insisting on a preventive censorship of all printed works. . . .
During the Lateran Council, Leo X promulgated, 3 May, 1515, the bull Inter sollicitudines. This is the first papal censorial decree given for the entire church which was universally accepted. . . .
Leo X issued the bull Exsurge Domine [June 15, 1520], by which all writings of Luther, even future ones, were forbidden under pain of excommunication. . . .
Pius X issued in 1905 orders regarding the printing and publication of liturgical chants and melodies, and In the encyclical letter Pascendi dominici gregis (8 Sept., 1907) most urgently enjoined on all the prohibition and censorship of books. . . .
It is, of course, absolutely Impossible for both the Pope and the Congregation of the Index to watch over the press of all countries in order to suppress at once each and every pernicious writing. . . . The Pope, of course, has the right of censorship for the entire church. (The Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. Ill, 1913, “Censorship of Books”, pp. 519-527)

It certainly borders on the ludicrous for intelligent men of this century, boasting of their admiration for the liberty vouchsafed in America, to maintain that one man in Rome, and he not noted for his scholarship, has the right to condemn and to forbid the printing of any writing, anywhere in the whole world, which he decides would be injurious to the faithful. The wisdom which has sometimes been displayed in this effort to control human thought may be appreciated when it is remembered that in 1616 the Congregation of the Index "altogether prohibited and condemned" a work by Father Paul Anthony Foscarini "wherein the said father has endeavored to show that the doctrine of the immobility of the sun in the center of the universe, and the mobility of the earth, is consonant to truth and is not opposed to Holy Scripture." From the last paragraph quoted from the encyclopedia it is plain that if such a thing were possible, the Pope and the Congregation of the Index would "suppress at once each and every pernicious writing" in all the countries of the world, they of course being the judges as to what is pernicious. This is the logical result of the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church concerning freedom of speech and of the press. "To make America Catholic" means the application of this doctrine in this country. (The Censorship of Printing, 1913, pp. 525,526)

Abraham Lincoln's death was perhaps as much a murder of revenge as it was a political assassination. As a Lawyer, Abraham Lincoln came to the defense of a man whom the Roman Catholic priesthood plotted against and “charged him with crimes which, if not disproved, would have incarcerated him in the State penitentiary for life.” The man was Charles Chiniquy, a Roman Catholic priest who was exposing the corruption of the Catholic priesthood and speaking out against the Church's superstitious idolatries, false doctrines and dangerous anti-constitutional policies. Several Jesuits had come from Chicago and St. Louis to see to it that Chiniquy be condemned. But when Lincoln successfully defended Chiniquy and wrenched him from their cruel hands, nothing can be compared to the expression of their rage against Lincoln. Propaganda was circulated among Romanists describing Lincoln as an excommunicated Catholic apostate, and several Roman-Catholic plots to assassinate Lincoln were concocted. In the 11th century, pope Gregory VII decreed that the killing of an apostate is not murder, but a good Christian act. That decree is incorporated in the canon law which every priest must study, and which every good Catholic must follow.... Coligny, a Protestant, was brutally murdered on St. Bartholomew's night; Henry IV was stabbed by the Jesuit assassin, Revaillac, the 14th of May, 1610, for having given liberty of conscience to his people; William, Prince of Orange, the head of the Dutch Republic, was stricken down July 10th, 1584, by Girard, the fiendish embodiment of all that was crafty, bigoted, and revengeful in Spanish Popery. (Washington In The Lap of Rome, Justin Fulton, 1888).

In the 16th century Ignatius Loyola founded a Catholic order called the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. In Secret Instructions of The Jesuits, historian William C. Brownlee informs us that as a soldier Ignatius Loyola “received a severe wound in the service of Ferdinand V. of Spain, in 1521; and he had been long confined in a place where he had access, probably, to no other books than The Lives of the Saints. It is not to be wondered at that his mind was thence turned away from military enthusiasm to ghostly fanaticism. When recovered, he speedily gave proofs of his insane fanaticism by assuming the name and office of 'Knight of the Virgin Mary.'... he pursued with solemn gravity, a course of the wildest and most extravagant adventures, in the belief that he was her most exalted favorite.” Ignatius assured Pope Paul III “that the plan and constitution were given to him by an immediate revelation from Heaven.” No doubt Ignatius said this to impress his “Holiness”, as Dr. Stillingfleet had shown, “every order of monks and nuns in Rome has been ordained, by visions, and inspirations from Heaven.” (Secret Instructions of the Jesuits, 1857, pp. 5, 6).

History confirms that the Jesuit organization has well earned its corrupt reputation. Jesuit priests have been known throughout history as the most wicked political arm of the Roman Catholic Church. At the Council of Trent, the Catholic Church gave the Jesuits the specific assignment of destroying Protestantism and bringing people back to the Mother Church. This was to be done not only through the Inquisition and through torture, but also through theology. The Jesuits definitely have a dark history of intrigue and sedition, that’s why they were expelled from numerous countries throughout most of their history: France (1594 & 1764), England (1584 & 1604), Venice (1606), Portugal (1759), Spain (1767), Naples (1767 & 1848), Malta (1768), Russia (1820), Switzerland (1847), Genoa (1848), Austria (1848), Germany (1872), and others (The Historic Note-Book, by E. Cobham Brewer, 1909, pp. 469, 470). No less than fifty-one documented expulsions from world governments gives us an idea of the motives and methods employed by the Jesuits. Their reputation for “Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;” “subterfuge, espionage, subversion and worse is well-known to the serious student of history” (I Tim. 4:1-3).

The Jesuit Society was first established in the United States in 1807. On May 6th, 1816, John Adams wrote to Thomas Jefferson stating, “I do not like the late Resurrection of the Jesuits. They have a General, now in Russia, in correspondence with jesuits in the U.S. who are more numerous than everybody knows. Shall We not have Swarms of them here? In as many shapes and disguises as ever.... In the shape of printers, Editors, Writers, School masters, etc. If ever any Congregation of men could merit, eternal Perdition on Earth and in Hell... it is this Company of Loyola.” (The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Vol. XV, 1905, p. 17). On August 1st Jefferson replied: “I dislike, with you, their restoration, because it marks a retrograde step from light towards darkness.” (The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Vol. XV, 1905, p. 58; The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Vol. VII, 1857, p. 27; Secret History, E. Paris, p. 75). John Adams wrote, “I have long been decided in opinion that a free government and the Roman Catholick religion can never exist together in any nation or Country." "Liberty and Popery cannot live together.” (The Founders on Religion, James H. Hutson, 2007, p. 41).

Historian Edmond Paris commenting on the Jesuit organization wrote:

“It is the same today; the 30,000 official members of the Society operate all over the world in the capacity of her personnel, officers of a truly secret army containing in its ranks heads of political parties, high ranking officials, generals, magistrates, physicians, Faculty professors, etc., all of them striving to bring about, in their own sphere,“l'Opus dei”, God's work, in reality the plans of the papacy.” (Secret History, Paris, pp. 27,30).

Given the history of the Roman Catholic church and their involvement and influence in world events, it is no wonder why this church seeks to hide and/or misrepresent its history. Unlike the Roman Catholic church, who's official policy was to torture and murder those who rejected its authority and spoke out against its false doctrines, King James I of England was against such sadistic practices, stating, “I will never allow in my conscience that the blood of any man shall be shed for diversity of opinion in religion, but I would be sorry that Catholics should so multiply as that they might be able to practise their old principles upon us.”(The Cecil Family, George R. Dennis, 1914, p. 184). In 1605 King James narrowly escaped being executed. Several Roman Catholics “had taken an oath to assassinate him and the members of the House of Commons. Their pledge was sealed with a solemn communion service, served by a Jesuit priest, Father John Gerard.... On the morning of the plot's unfolding, urgent messages were to be sent to the pro-Catholic members of parliament calling them away from their unsuspecting presence in harms way.” The plot was discovered in the nick of time when “on November 5th, British security agents discovered the suspicious presence of Guy Fawkes (or, as he preferred, Guido Fawkes), a Catholic soldier of fortune, positioned outside the cellar door of Westminster Palace.” “Hidden beneath... the very spot where James would be standing in just a few hours, thirty-six barrels of gunpowder were uncovered by the astonished members of the King's secret service. A tinder box and matches were found on Fawkes' person.” When “summoned to face the council in the royal bedchamber at Whitehall Palace”, Fawkes “appeared unmoved”, expressing his only regret was that he had “failed to blow the Scottish king and his Scottish followers back to Scotland where they belonged.” Months of investigations revealed a circle of conspirators which included Thomas Winter, Thomas Percy, John Wright, Guy Fawkes, Robert Catesby, a Jesuit priest, Father Henry Garnet. Three of the collaborators died in a shoot out with authorities. The remaining conspirators were later tried and convicted of their diabolical scheme. (The Story of Civilization, Ariel and Will Durant, Vol. 7, p. 141; Tower of London, Christopher Hibbert, p. 86; Final Authority, William Grady, p. 188,189; The Men Behind The King James Version, Gustavus S. Paine, p. 88) (see also The Gunpowder Treason, 1609; The History of The Gunpowder Plot, 1804).

In the year 1830 Historian Charles A. Goodrich wrote:

“The present depressed state of Popery, both in England, and on the continent [North America], is no proof that its leading principles [propagation of pagan doctrines, persecution of Protestant Christians] have been abandoned. By means of various revolutions, its power has been shaken, and, from motives of policy, it has been compelled to cease from blood [burning people at the stake];”but, in the language of a distinguished divine of our own country, ‘not a principle of the system has been abandoned. All the wiles of ages are put in requisition now, to heal the fatal wounds, which the beast has received, and to render the system still more powerful [influential] and terrific.’ To the American people, this subject presents itself with peculiar interest. Within a short period, the attention of the Pope of Rome has been directed to North America, and systematic efforts are now making, under his immediate patronage, and at his expense, to introduce and establish this corrupt system, in various parts of our land. Already, Catholic churches are erecting; Catholic priests and emissaries are arriving by scores; publications, designed to eulogize and recommend the system, are circulating abroad. The question presents itself to the American people: ‘Shall this system find encouragement, in the land of the pilgrims?’ We fear not, indeed, that Popery can ever greatly flourish on the American soil; but such a root of bitterness, we wish not to see planted here, much less spreading its branches to even the temporary injury of the Protestant cause. Yet, while the friends of truth should not be needlessly alarmed, neither should they sleep. A holy vigilance should guard well the approaches of an enemy, whose triumphs here would be the ruin of that fair fabric, which cost our fathers so much toil to erect. What friend of Zion does not tremble, at only the possibility that papal darkness and papal thraldom may overspread even a portion of our country.... It is only necessary that the volume [Foxe's Book Of Martyrs] should be carefully and candidly read, to convince [any one], that the papal system is not that harmless, innocent thing, which some would represent. We wish not, indeed, that the papists should be persecuted; we would say, protect them in their private capacity, wherever they exist in the land; but beware of so encouraging them, as to bring the American people, under their temporal and spiritual domination.... A Church, which pretends to be infallible, will always seek the destruction of those, who dissent from it;” (Charles A. Goodrich, Book Of Martyrs, Hartford, Connecticut, printed by Philemon Canfield, 1830, pp. 3,4. *Dr. Beecher's Missionary Sermon)

Commenting on the seventeenth century Catholic immigration to America, Author Thomas E. Watson wrote:

“The refusal of [Lord] Baltimore and his Catholic colonists to forswear [reject] the Pope's asserted authority to dispose of crowns, kill kings and other rulers, and to change civil governments, throws a vivid light upon the hypocrisy of American priests of today, who are gulling and lulling the people by saying that Popes have never claimed such rights.
The truth is, that Pope Pius IX. reasserted that right in the syllabus of 1864, and it is the law of the Roman church, as it has been since the Dark Ages.
Lord Baltimore wanted to leave England, and take away as many Catholics as possible, for this reason: the country was getting too hot to hold them.
Puritanism had grown so strong, and resentment against recent Catholic atrocities was so intense, that no Romanist was safe, unless he swore allegiance to the crown.
This oath made him say that the Pope had no temporal power over the King, and none over the realm. Catholics were not willing to swear that: they believed then—as they believe now—that the Italian Pope is supreme ruler of earth, temporal and spiritual. No matter how many lies the priests now tell and publish, that is the orthodox Roman Catholic belief.” (Political and Economic Handbook, T. E. Watson, 1916, p. 4)

To this day the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic church believe that the Italian Pope is supreme ruler of earth, temporal and spiritual. Quoting from Roman Catholic sources, 19th century Professor of International Law at the University of Strasburg, Heinrich Geffcken, wrote, “But wherever the civil law comes in conflict with the Divine and canonical laws the Pope, as interpreter of the latter, has the right to amend or to annul the former. And as he alone, by virtue of his Divine authority, can know what is sin, he also has the right to correct or to nullify laws which regulate purely temporal matters, for if the Pope condemns such laws as sinful, his condemnation is a proof that they are really contrary to truth.” (Church and State: Their Relations Historically Developed, Volume 2, 1877, p. 241). William Arthur wrote, “The Pope may place a priesthood in a certain measure under civil law by conceding certain rights to the civil power. Or he may abandon a condemned priest to the secular arm. But he is himself ‘the supreme judge even of civil laws, and therefore is incapable of coming under any true obligation to them (p. 663). In him, therefore, immunity, partial only in the clergy, reaches its fulness, for none can place him under that law or that authority over both of which he sits as judge.” (The pope, The Kings and The People; A History of The Movement To Make The Pope Governor of The World, Volume 1, 1877, p. 67).

In much the same way that modern-day Muslims practice a watered-down version of Islam in civilized countries today, many modern-day Catholics in the United States practice a watered-down version of Catholicism, and not the historical Catholicism that dominated the Roman Catholic church for over a thousand years. Author Thomas E. Watson continues:

“Baltimore's charter provided for religious freedom? Oh, yes: the Catholics needed it. They were settling among heretical hornets, and they didn't want to get stung. Within a few decades after these Catholics who, needing toleration, tolerated, their brethren in Ireland, not needing toleration, planned a general massacre of all Protestants, slaughtered thousands, and came near to success in their hellish design to extirpate heresy—as per the oath of every cardinal, every bishop, and every priest.
When religious freedom was established in Maryland, by American law, the Protestants did it; and, at that time, the Catholics were only one-fourth of the population.” (Political and Economic Handbook, T. E. Watson, 1916, p. 4)

Most of what is published today as authoritative scholarly research is nothing but propaganda. Modern-day scholarship has joined hands with the Vatican to present to the world a revised account of history. Don't be misled. Do your own research. There are many good sources available today to help the honest scholar and researcher prove the validity of the claims made here today. LEAGUE OF NATIONS
(Published in The Guardian of Liberty – June 1923)

The arrival of Sir Cecil Drummond, in the United States, is a warning. He was appointed Secretary of the League by the late President Wilson, who had consulted the Pope [Benedict XV] of Rome before he even opened the Versailles conference. Sir Cecil is an English Romanist, and, be it remembered, the League of Nations is so divided as to give 12 Romanist votes to five votes of Protestant and Slav nations. Cardinal O'Connel, as we have shown in these columns, claimed that the fourteen points in the conditions imposed by the League were first proposed by the Pope, and let it not be forgotten that President Wilson, on his arrival in Europe, hastened to Rome, to see the Pope, but the result of that conference has never been divulged.

The writer recently asked a preacher why so many of his cloth had ceased teaching the beautiful life of Jesus, and were engaged in popular fads, as suffragism, cancer cure, prohibition, disarmament, etc., to which he replied, "you would be surprised to know the pressure brought on us to do that sort of thing." He did not add that it would surprise me to know how the men of his cloth, the men we looked on and revered as men of God, would yield to political pressure. If these men, custodians of the code of morals; the men called on to administer to the sick and dying; who have the confidence of our families, are to yield to political pressure, we are in a sad plight. A pacifist society, in Washington, recently appealed to the Secretary of War to use his office to prevent a general officer of the Army from giving his lectures on explosives and chemical warfare, and it is currently reported that this society is financed by money from Europe. Then, about the 8th of April, the Rev. Dr. Fisher, in a Methodist Church in Washington opened the fight for the League of Nations, declaring that religious bodies must lead the contest for the League of Nations. To the writer it seems his reverence is using his holy office to pervert the politics of the Nation, and destroy the liberties of Protestants. A League of Nations, dominated by a majority of Roman Catholic votes, can only lead to Romish domination.

In 1914 Austria imposed a Romish concordat on Slav Servia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which they resented; Austria declared war, and its Protestant ally, Germany, stood by it, but its Romish ally (Italy) broke faith. There was then no such nation as Poland. The result of the war is that Protestant Germany is obliged to pay all the indemnity, Austria pays nothing, and Poland, from nothing, has become a powerful, aggressive Roman Catholic nation. Germany was fighting the Pope's battle; it is now paying the penalty.

The purposes of the League of Nations, and the temporal power of the Pope, differ only in the form of administration. A majority of votes, dictated by religion, will be the same as if dictated by the head of the church. The pious, conscientious Romanist believes the head of his church is the authorized delegate of God, if not God himself, and it is easy to understand why he devoutly favors all the church is interested in, and all in preference to the aims of any nation or any other creed. Then why should Methodists urge the adoption of the League? Has any pressure been brought to bear on them to do this sort of thing?

[The United Nations was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations which was officially dissolved in 1946.]

Supplementary Note

The preservation of the true texts of the Holy Bible is well documented by the overwhelming majority of manuscript evidence. Corruption of both the Old and New Testament scriptures began very early in the history of Judaism and Christianity and is also well documented. The prophet Jeremiah wrote, “The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not:” (Jer. 2:8). The Apostle Paul wrote, “For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God” (II Cor. 2:17). Among the many “wolves” that Jesus warned about “which come to you in sheep‘s clothing” (Matt. 7:15) who did in fact “corrupt the word of God” through the centuries were Tatian (110-180 A.D.), Clement (AD 150-217), Origen (AD 184-254)), Eusebius (AD 260-340), Constantine (AD 306-337), Jerome (circa 380 AD).

Tatian was influenced by Gnosticism and wrote a harmony of the Gospels called the Diatessaron where he notoriously corrupted the true Gospel of Christ. Clement established a school in Alexandria, Egypt for the dissemination of Gnosticism. Origen believed that the pagan writings of Plato, Socrates, Pythagoras, and Aristotle (i.e. transmigration of souls; reincarnation; purgatory; etc.) were inspired of God. Origen did not believe in the literal resurrection of Jesus Christ, nor did he believe in the bodily second coming of Christ. At Constantine's urging, Eusebius copied some 50 Greek manuscripts from Alexandria, Egypt using manuscripts translated by Origen whom he erroneously believed to have accurately preserved the true texts. Seeking to unite paganism with Christianity, Constantine, the Roman empire's first ever ‘Christian’ Pontifex Maximus (Pope), promoted Origen's corrupt bible and established the Roman Catholic Church at the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D.. Constantine's life and conduct were a mixture of Christianity and paganism (he had his eldest son, Crispus, and his second wife, Fausta, put to death). Jerome, a 4th century ‘scholar’ and promoter of Mary worship and celibacy of the clergy, used the corrupt manuscripts of Origin and Eusebius to prepare a bible that would favor the Roman Catholic teachings. Pope Innocent III became pope of the church of Rome in A.D. 1198 and declared himself “the bridegroom”, a title belonging exclusively to our Lord Jesus Christ (Matt. 9:15; 25:1-13) (Innocent III was the first who instituted the office of the inquisition: the burning of non-Catholic bibles and the slaughter of countless thousands of innocent Bible believing Christians was the result of this ‘holy’ inquisition) (Innocent. 3, in Consecra. Pontif., Serm. 3, page 19). Pope Pius IX (1846-1878), who first announced the “Immaculate Conception” of Mary on December 8, 1854, declared himself “infallible” in July of 1870.

The Lord Jesus Christ said, “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ [from the Greek word christos meaning THE ANOINTED (a priest - divinely appointed by God)]; and shall deceive many.” (Matt. 24:4,5). To this day the Catholic church continues to teach that the Pope “holds upon the earth the place of God Almighty” and “is Christ in office, jurisdiction and power” (Vatican Council of 1870). Noah Webster (Founding Father of American Scholarship and Education) wrote, “The pope pretends to be vicar of Jesus Christ on earth.” (An American Dictionary of The English Language, 1828, 1860, 1911). The church of Rome deceived and conquered people during the Dark Ages (circa A.D. 500 - 1500) by moving from a word based culture (the Bible) to an image based culture (statues, symbols, relics, etc.). Nevertheless, remnants of faithful Christians in various lands retained the true scriptures throughout the centuries and opposed the corrupt teachings of the Roman church. During the Reformation period (circa A.D. 1500) while some Protestants may have spoken out against papal tyranny and broke and burned Catholic idols, Catholics (officially sanctioned by the “holy mother church”), for centuries, persecuted, tortured and burned alive at the stake many Protestant Christians. “It is not true, as the Roman church claims, that she gave the Bible to the world. What she gave was an impure text, a text with thousands of verses so changed as to make way for her unscriptural doctrines. While upon those who possessed the veritable Word of God, she poured out through long centuries her stream of cruel persecution.” (Fuller, Which Bible?, p. 214, 215).

It is a myth that few people had scriptures or could read during the middle ages (The Cambridge History of the Bible vol. 2, pp. 389-390 et al.). The myth, that the common folks “had only scraps of scriptures before Wycliffe (1325-1384), is perpetuated to degrade God’s promise of “the word which he commanded to a thousand generations” and “to all nations” (1 Chron. 16:15, Romans 16:26). When the impression is given that the common man has no preserved and infallible scriptures, the position and authority of the word of God can more easily be pirated by “Popish Persons” and “self conceited Brethren, who...give liking unto nothing, but what is framed by themselves, and hammered on their anvil” (“The Epistle Dedicatory,” King James Bible). Such “Popish Persons” are then free to do away with any or all of God's commandments (the church of Rome has thus-far “officially” done away with two of God's ten commandments: the 2nd commandment which forbids the making of images for use in worship (Ex. 20:8-4,5); and the 4th commandment which commands us to keep holy the seventh day sabbath (Saturday) (Ex. 20:8-11)). “If mythmakers can convince us that generation upon generation of men and women went to their graves without reading or hearing the word of God, they can implant the false impression that we do not need scriptures (but need Catholic sacraments, ecstatic experiences, or myth-makers).... Foxe’s Acts and Monuments (A.D. 1563) traces Christianity from the first century to the 1500s. A thorough reading of all eight of its large volumes makes it abundantly clear that all who wanted scriptures, had them, in hand or in heart, as much or as little as they wanted.” (In Awe Of Thy Word, pp.774,778)

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:31,32). Please, dear reader, examine the historical records and the manuscript evidence for yourself with an open heart and mind and let the truth set you free from these and other un-biblical and anti-biblical doctrines and commandments of men.

A Little Leaven Leaveneth The Whole Lump

“If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the LORD; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the LORD a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering: And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him. And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity. And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him. It is a trespass offering: he hath certainly trespassed against the LORD.” (Leviticus 5:15-19)

“Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain:” (Jeremiah 10:2,3) “Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods,.. And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place. Ye shall not do so unto the LORD your God....Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes.... Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them [the heathen] ... and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God.” (Deuteronomy 12:2-4,8,30,31)

“And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:” (Luke 12:47-51)

“I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people.... And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.” (Leviticus 20:24,26)

“For thou didst separate them from among all the people of the earth, to be thine inheritance, as thou spakest by the hand of Moses thy servant, when thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt, O Lord GOD.” (I Kings 8:53)

“Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.” (Exodus 19:5,6)

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:” (I Peter 2:9)

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” (II Corinthians 6:14-18)

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” (Ephesians 5:11)

“If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:” (I John 1:6)

“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.” (Luke 16:10)

“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17)

“Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.” (Proverbs 9:6)

“Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” (Galatians 5:7-9)

“For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.” (Hebrews 10:26-33)

“For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake [“bearing his reproach.” (Heb 13:13)]; Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.” (Philippians 1:29,30)

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

“For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:” (1 Peter 4:3,4)

“Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.” (Acts 14:15,16)

“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:” (Acts 17:30)

“But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.” (Matt. 23:8). “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels [or saints] (Col. 2:18). “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” (I Tim. 2:5,6), who is “the head over all things to the church” (Eph. 1:22). “And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.” (Matt. 23:9). “Confess your faults [not your sins] one to another” (Jam. 5:16). “If we confess our sins” to the “one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”, “he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:9); “Who...by himself purged our sins” (Heb. 1:3; 9:28), “with his own blood” (Acts 20:28; Heb. 13:12; Rev. 1:5); for “we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.... For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin” (Heb. 10:10-18). To believe that anyone, including a priest or religious organization, is infallible is naive to say the least (“for there is no man that sinneth not” (I Kings 8:46)). As a man, Jesus Christ said that “there is none good but one, that is, God” (Mark 10:18). “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.” (Eccl. 7:20). No church, no lodge, no good works can save you. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8,9). Because “we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” in the sight of God (Isaiah 64:6), and “every man at his best state is altogether vanity.” (Psa. 39:5). “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). Only the Lord Jesus Christ can claim this glory! “But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men” (Phil. 2:7) “in the likeness of sinful flesh” (Rom. 8:3) and “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” (Heb. 4:15). “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom. 5:1).

You can have absolute assurance of your salvation, here and now. “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” (I Cor. 1:18) (not to be confused with the unconditional Eternal Security fable). “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.” (I Cor. 15:1,2). “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (I John 5:13). “and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” (James 1:21). “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” (Heb. 12:2). “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,” (Eph. 1:13). “For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:” (Col. 1:5,6). “Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.” (I Pet. 1:9). Jesus said to “rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20). “We know that we have passed from death unto life” (I John 3:14). Jesus said that “Ye must be born again.”“ (John 3:5-7): “not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” (I Peter 1:23).

Catholics are discouraged by their superiors (or Priests) from reading the KJV Holy Bible and searching “the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11), and as a result are unfamiliar with much of its contents. The Lord said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). Jesus said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they [the scriptures] are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” (John 5:39,40). God's promise to “preserve” his “pure words” “forever” “to all generations” of believers “of every nation under heaven” is well documented by the overwhelming majority of manuscript evidence (aprox. 99% of the New Testament manuscripts, some dating back to the first century, are in agreement with the text of the KJV) (Psa. 12:6; 33:11, 119:90; Luke 21:33; Acts 2:6,7).

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.(I Corinthians 10:14)

IDOL'ATRY, n. [L. idololatria. Gr. idol, and to worship or serve.] The worship or veneration of idols, images, statues, or any thing made by hands, or any person, place or thing which is not God.

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. (Revelation 18:4)

Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD’S vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence....My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD. (Jeremiah 51:6,45)

And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;
I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.
Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. (Revelation 2:18-23)

FOOTNOTE

The Lord Jesus Christ said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they [the scriptures] are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” (John 5:39,40). “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matt. 7:22,23).

The word of God (the Bible) is to the Christian's soul what natural food is to the human body. Unfortunately, many Christians today are sowing and reaping “every wind of doctrine”(Eph. 4:14) by following their own feelings and emotions instead of the Bible. Many are being “conformed to this world”(Rom. 12:2) attempting to “be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils”(I Cor. 10:2). Many are placing their own heart's desires above the scriptures. Just as God's own people (Jews) in Jesus' day preferred their own traditions over God's commandments (the scriptures, the word of God), so do God's own people (Christians) today prefer their own traditions over God's commandments (the Bible, the word of God). Jesus chastised his people saying, “Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”(Matt. 15:7,8) “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.... Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition”(Mark 7:7-13). Jesus said that “many other such like things ye do”. What “many other such like things” is Jesus talking about? “your tradition”, “the tradition of men”, “teaching for doctrines the commandments of men”(Mark 7:13,8,7), such as learning “the way of the heathen” and borrowing “the customs of the people” cutting “a tree out of the forest”(Jer. 10:2,3) to “serve the living and true God” with “these vanities”(I Thess. 1:9; Acts 14:15), making “the word of God of none effect through your tradition”(Mark 7:13); and such as keeping the first day of the week and forgetting “the sabbath day, to keep it holy....the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God”(Ex. 20:8,10), making “the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition”(Matt. 15:6). And “God spake all these words”(Ex. 20:1) making it very clear that we are not to “add unto the word” (the Bible), neither are we to “diminish ought from it”(Deut. 4:2). Jesus says to his people today, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”(Rev. 3:19)
