"My Story: From This...to This"

*by Anna Shelper

You know how you are always swinging off things as a child? Well, I'm still swinging! Mum says when I was little, I used to climb up benches. These days, she watches me swing through the air on opening night-- she feels proud, but so scared at the same time!

I began my career with the Fruit Fly Circus in Albury, where I first learnt the trapeze. I even traveled to China where I practiced in an acrobatic school, it was incredible!

Now, I'm a trapeze artist with the international circus Cirque du Soleil, based in Montreal, Canada. I'll be in Cirque's production Alegria in Auckland from Thursday, and then touring my home country, Australia, in March. I wear a safety line, but it's designed so it doesn't look obvious-- Mum forgets it's there!

It's a real family affair-- my sister Kristy is in another Cirque production and our brother Brendan is a Sydney-based acrobat.

I do miss my family as we're scattered all over the world, but I love my circus life. My partner Dominique is a masseur with Cirque, so thankfully, we travel together all the time.

While we don't travel in gypsy caravans-- there's still an element in the exotic in Cirque. You get used to walking past contortionists, putting their heads in impossible places!
