Mini Bio
(note: I haven't had time to find a Jimi Biog online yet so I wrote this myself and I wrote it very fast, so there may be a few errors)
James Marshall Hendrix (the name of my future son) was born in Seattle, Washington, but spent much of his childhood moving around. He lived for a time in Vancouver. James was discharged from the army at the age of 17 after a parachuting accident. He then took up guitar and started calling himself Jimi.
He was 'discovered', in 1966, by Chas Chandler (of the Animals) in the Cafe Wha? while doing his rendition of an old folk tune, "Hey Joe". At the time Jimi had attained little success as a solo artist with the record companies in America. Chas recognized Jimi's talent and convinced him to go to England. Jimi said he would go on one condition, that Chas introduce him to his friends (and Jimi's heroes) Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. Jimi met Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell who became his bass player and drummer, and they formed the Experience. Jimi soon had a hit song in England with "Hey Joe".
In 1967 Jimi performed at the Monterey Pop Festival in California. Jimi pulled out all of his tricks, one of them being playing the guitar with his teeth. Then at the end of his set, Jimi poured gasoline on his guitar and burned it. The crowd went wild and Jimi was an established performer from that point on. The same year the Experience released, "Are You Experienced?" which became a hit album.
Jimi went on to have many successes, with and following the Experience (his second band was named the Band of Gypsies). A New York music critic said of Jimi's music, "[it's] like heavy metal falling from the sky". This was a favourable comparison, and it was the first mention of the term "Heavy Metal" which went on to describe an entire genre.
Jimi's famous use of drugs eventually caused an abrupt end to his life on September 8th 1970, at the age of 27.
