Saint Rickey!
The New Orleans Saints conducted the only one-player draft in NFL history on Saturday, but what a player he was! The Saints selected Texas running back Ricky Williams with the fifth overall pick in the 1999 draft after a last minute trade with the Washington Redskins.
Inexplicably, the Indianapolis Colts, who had just traded Marshal Faulk days earlier, passed on the Heisman trophy winner with the fourth overall pick and decided to instead draft Miami running back Edgerrin James. Saints fans can thank Colts GM Bill Polian and former Saints coach Jim Mora for allowing Ricky Williams to fall into their hands.
In order to move up to the fifth spot, the Saints had to trade the rest of their picks this year (one in each of the 1st and 3rd-7th rounds) and next year's picks in rounds one and three. The Saints had offered much more to the top four teams in the draft order, but none of those teams were willing to trade down.
