Unfortunately, due to Remy's shady past, little is actually known about him before the time he caught up with the X-Men. Some things that are known, however, is that as a young child he was abandoned, or possibly taken from, his real parents and forced to grow up by himself on the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana. To survive, he took to thieving and pickpocketing to get what he needed. One day, however, when trying to pickpocket a wallet from a seemingly unsuspecting victim, Remy was caught in the act by the owner of it --- who also happened to be the head of the legendary Thieves Guild, Jean-Luc Lebeau.
Taking a liking to the young Remy, Jean-Luc decided to adopt him into the Guild as his own son. It is during this time among the ranks of the Thieves that Remy mastered his skills in thieving, and combat, which include the precision throwing of objects, as well as exceptional use of a bo staff. It is not yet known how he came about knowledge of his mutant power to kinetically charge objects, but it is known that his time with the Guild and their special talents was helpful in honing him into what he is today.
Life in the Guild wasn't always easy however. Their constant war with the rival Assassin's Guild always kept the Thief’s on their toes, including Remy. A possible means to an end was entertained however, when a marriage was set to take place. Remy from the Thief’s Guild to Bella Donna Boudreaux, a childhood friend --- and daughter of Marius Boudreaux, head of the Assassin's guild. Hopeful for peace, the two Guild heads arranged for the marriage to take place after Remy's eighteenth birthday. Several things would happen between then however, one of those being the "Tracts of Passage", which would earn him his place in the Guild. To do this, Remy had to steal the Cheating Star, or L'Etroile du Tricherie, from the daughter of an infamous jewel thief, Genevieve Darceneaux. His way of accomplishing this was a good example of his ability to "charm" people. His plan --- to seduce her.
Taking his adopted brother Henri with him as a sponsor, Remy set out to steal the pendant from Genevieve. His plan worked perfectly. After a night with the woman, he managed to acquire the pendant from her without her suspecting a thing. On his way back to where he and Henri were staying however, he decided to stop and celebrate at a cofee shop. To his dismay, when he returned back, he found a ransom note left by fellow mutant Sabretooth, who had been hired to get the pendant back. He was told to go to Notre Dame, where Henri was being held captive. For the sake of his brother, he did, and when he arrived he found an even worse scenario than he had expected. Sabretooth had tied both Henri and Genevieve from the roof by ropes, and in exchange for the pendant, he would be allowed to save one of their lives. In the end, Remy did the only logical thing and saved his brothers life.
Within time, both Remy and his brother found their way back to New Orleans, and within a few months, his scheduled marriage to Bella Donna took place. Though supposed to be a joyous occassion, Remy was challenged to a duel after the wedding by Bella Donna's brother, Julien. For the matter of family honor, they fought, and in the end Remy was the victor, leaving Julien dead. Despite the victory being in self defense, it was agreed that Remy, to maintain peace, was to be banished from the Guild and with that judgment, he decided to leave New Orleans, and his newly wed wife, behind.
