READ THE BIBLE TEXT (Revelation 13:11-15)

The False Prophet

Following the rise of the first beast, the Antichrist, John saw a second beast come out of the earth (as over against heaven). He will appear like a lamb giving the appearance of a true religious character and thus deceive many. But he will speak like a dragon and so will betray his true nature, for he will be an agent of Satan who throughout the book is portrayed as a dragon. This second beast is elsewhere called the False Prophet (Revelation 16:13; 19:20; 20:10). (The Footsteps of the Messiah by Arnold G. Fruchtenbaum, pg. 172)

His activitites as the counterfeit holy spirit are now spelled out (verses 12-15). As the Holy Spirit exercises equal authority with the Son, the False Prophet will exercise equal authority with the Antichrist (verse 12a). Just as the Holy Spirit calls all men to worship the resurrected Son, the False Propet will call all men to worship the resurrected Antichrist whose death-stroke was healed (verse 12b). In order to fully carry out the deception, the False Prophet will have the power of the counterfeit spiritual gifts of miracles and will perform signs for the purpose of deception (verses 13-14a). After convincing the world of the supremacy of the Antichrist, he will command men to make an image of the beast. After the image is made, it will be given life by the False Prophet. This power of giving life will be another factor why all men will worship the Antichrist and the image, and those who refuse to do so are put to death (verses 14b-15). (The Footsteps of the Messiah by Arnold G. Fruchtenbaum, pg. 172)

Will the False Prophet be Jewish?

Perhaps. Perhaps not. One noted author writes:

In close association with the Beast, the head of the federated empire, is another individual known as the "False Prophet" (Rev. 19:20; 20:10), called "the second beast" in Revelation 13:11-17, where his fullest description is given. In that passage of Scripture there are some important factors concerning him to be observed: (1) This individual is evidently a Jew, since he arises out of the earth, or land, that is Palestine (13:11); (2) he is influential in relgious affairs (13:11, "two horns like a lamb"), (3) he is motivated by Satan as the first beast is (13:11); (4) he has a delegated authority (13:12, "the power of the first beast"); (5) he promotes the worship of the first best and compels the earth to worship the first beast as God (13:12); (6) his ministry is authenticated by the signs and miracles which he does, evidently proving that he is Elijah that was to come (13:13-14); (7) he is successful in deceiving the unbelieving world (13:14); (8) the worship promoted is an idolatrous worship (13:14-15); (9) he has the power of death to compel men to worship the beast (13:15); (10) he has authority in the economic realm to control all commerce (13:16-17).... New International Version

Revelation 13:11-15
11
Then I saw another beast, coming out of the earth. He had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon.
12
He exercised all the authority of the first beast on his behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.
13
And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men.
14
Because of the signs he was given power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth. He ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.
15
He was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. BACK to top
