Rant of the (random amount of time)

Stupid feature of my page: My useless ranting and raving...

today's rant is.....homophobia!

in homeroom today, the boys in the back corner (they must clone these people...that or they come with the classrooms) were discussing the school librarian.

"She's a queer!" was the resounding comment I heard.

Of course, with the new group that a friend and I created, a homosexual/bisexual/transgendered issue exploration and support group here at school, we had been talking about safe ways to o combat homophobia. One of these ways was to confront the use of 'gay' and 'queer' as insults. So, I said to the ringleader, "Are you implying that she is a lesbian?" and he said "yes, I am." At that point, I said "so what is wrong with that?"

This is when the classic homophobic behaviour came in: "Why, are you her lover? hehhehheh"

I ignored that, seeing as they are just bigoted little boys. What bothered me was when one of the less moronic ones spoke up:

"It isn't that I have anything against gay people, just the special rights they all want"

So basic human decency is now a special right? Ouch. I confronted him, and said what sort of special rights do you think that homosexuals want? He said "Well, having kids for one. Homosexuals can't properly raise children!" He was saying all this calmly too, which was scary. This wasn't some sort of thing he was doing to get a rise out of me, this was what he truly believed.

At that point I said that consider the teenage parents (not that teenagers are incapable of being decent parents, but many are barely mature enough to take care of themselves.) that are so common. Couldn't an older, mature loving couple make an at the very least equally safe household for a child regardless of their gender or orientation? He said, well, we can only regulate the homosexuals.

Then the bell rings, and I am left to seethe. This is the sort of attitude that is COMPLETELY acceptable to society. It scares me, and angers me, and ultimately saddens me. In a society where you need to account for yourself before you can adopt a stray cat from the humane society, _almost_ anyone can have a human child. As long as you aren't gay.
