MISTAKEN CREEL LIMITS

The Ministry of Natural Resources has responded to my article last week on Conservation Licences and Musky fishing. The MNR verified that definitely the Lake St Clair system was going through some very radical ecological changes and that it was becoming a splendid habitat for Muskellunge and Sturgeon. (Sturgeon? Hmmmm, interesting).

Daryl Smith and John Cooper with the MNR pointed out something to me that totally blew me away. The resident conservation fishing licence in comparison to the regular fishing licence does NOT allow for ½ limits of fish! I have been preaching the ½ limit fact for 4 years now and what scares me is that none of you set me straight. Maybe you all have the impression that fact is true also. In actuality, the conservation fishing licence allows for 25 perch per day on L St Clair (50 for regular fishing licence), 2 walleye per day (6 regular) 2 bass per day (6 regular) and no limit for Muskellunge or Sturgeon (1 per day regular). I suspected the latter two species would have no daily limit with a conservation licence holder. Check with your local MNR office for other species limits or check the guide regs.
