Friday 21st April

Last weeks Third XV cup semi-final against Matson away, produced an exciting match in difficult weather conditions. The home side scored an early try,but Levens came back strong and also scored a try.A Matson mid-period of three tries and the rain turning to snow sealed the match for the home side.

Tuesday 11th April

Third Team Cup News

Only one change in the thirds for tonights Semi-Final of the North Gloucestershire Combination Cup.James Green comes in to the second-row at the expense of Paul Davies who moves on to the bench to make way for Hugh Parry to fit in at No.8.

Taylors Chest Tears

With a lot of players making themselves unavailable, the club could only field one side this week. The first fifteen travelled to Avonmouth for this last offical league match.A confident team perfomance produced good rugby with the score telling the story.Skipper Rich Rudge stood out scoring two tries and "Lomu" Taylor on the wing was unlucky not to score after his strutting pigeon chest "so much bigger than his ears" got in the way of the ball.

UNDER EIGHTS NEWS....

Mums Delight

I just want to say a huge big "WELL DONE" to the Under 8's team, who,on Sunday, not only managed to remain unbeaten in the Millennium Tournament, but after a very exciting quarter final, went on to play Stroud in the semi-finals. This game was beyond doubt, one of the most nailbiting experiences I have ever had to go through but it was all worth it when the ref blew his whistle for full-time with Longlevens coming out as the winners. Both teams played exceptionally well, but being a biased mum, the best team certainly won on the day............I'm very proud of all of them. We now have the Finals to look forward to where Longlevens will be battling it out with Clifton......

Well done from all at the club and good luck in the final.

Thursday 6th April 2000

THIRDS CUP WIN....

Montys Maraulders carried on to the semi-finals of the Glanville cup with a hard fought encounter with Coney Hill 3XV.An early try by Hugh Parry started Levens off on a good foot, but Coney Hill came straight back with a converted try and for a while Longlevens were on the back foot.Good coordination between hooker Keith Mountjoy and second-row Lloyd Thomas produced perfect lineout ball which helped Levens gain control.Tries from Jerry English(2),Mike Kemmett put Levens in a good position, but Coney Hill came back again. The home side defended well on their own line with a series of penalties and scrums lasting at least 10 mins. The last minute Coney Hill got through with an unconverted try, only to hear the referees whistle for the end of the match.Good performances from all players, with Rich Yorke showing good form on the wing and Dave Ellis man of the match ,playing in the back row.

Friday 31st March 2000

Levens Penalty Pain

The first and second teams bowed out of their combinatian cup matches this week with cruel last minute penalties in both matches.

On Monday night the seconds had a close game with Old Centralians at home.A penalty was awarded to the home side with three minutes to go. Darren Hendry successfully kicked at goal to take Levens into the lead.Unfortunatly with seconds to go, Cents were awarded a penalty. After the kick earned them three more points,Longlevens time had run out as the referee blew the whistle for the end of the match.
Good performances from Canadian Rob McNaughton at scrum-half and Ken Stone at second row.

On wednesday night,it was the firsts turn in the cup. After missing to early penalties,Longlevens forwards dominated the early stages of the game leaving Spartans to be at their best to keep Levens from scoring. It came as no surprise when the home side took the lead after 17 minutes with a converted try. This should have been a platform for a big Longlevens victory but Spartans edged their way back and scored a try to bring them within 2 points. After the break,Longlevens were pushed more and more on to the back foot. With minutes to go,Levens were penalised for killing the ball and this gave Spartans a simple penalty to clinch victory.

Wednesday 22nd March 2000

A winning try scored by Dick Preedy after coming on to replace Dave Harkins, kept Levens on track and the result was good preparation for a busy week ahead with league and combination cup fixtures with Chipping Sodbury and Spartans respectfully.

A surprising break in form for the seconds, after a long winning period, which hopefully will resume this Saturday against Chipping Sodbury in preperation for the cup on Monday starting with Old Centralians.

Thursday 16th March 2000

With captain Richard Rudge,Steve Spencer and Mike Foyle all unavailable, the first XV had to make changes.Mark Entwistle comes in to the side on the wing,Adey Jones moves into the center, with Steve Tombs coming in at No.8.Also Steve Rowan and Eddie Cross come off last weeks bench at hooker and full-back.

Due to the First XV,there are also changes from last weeks selection in the seconds,as well as losing players to the firsts,Craig Stone and Steve Stokes join the team from the thirds. After his debut at 17 for the thirds last week,Stoker will make this his second game for Longlevens as another debut.

Chris Godshall comes in at prop for the thirds this week, and Churchy moves to the backrow. With Julian Jenkins available,Stu Burrows moves from the center to the wing.
It's also nice to see Keith Mountjoy available in the replacements after his one month rehabilitation period.

Ernie Elver......Veiw from the swings.

As another Gloucester derby is upon us, its good to see the selection committee experimenting with the 1xv, blending youth and experience, shame they're missing their inspirational captain, plus Mike "League & NPI only" Foyle, rumour has it they've joined Spanner in an invitation XV in Andorra. Also its good to see "Tiger" Tombs nearing the 500 appearances mark, unfortunately I hear, the word on the lane is that the funds available for his testimonial match, carriage clock and gold watch were spent on a new 8 track jukebox circa 1976, which is currently nailed in the clubhouse. As for the 2xv, which have hit a purple patch, thanx to Papa Smurf, who, when not working for the Samaritans, is doing so much unseen work for the club (sweeping the changing rooms...driving the bus....advising Rich Bennett..).Let's hope they can come away with a win on saturday and take it on through the cup ! Still, the main reason for my trip up the internet highway, is a huge welcome back to Keith Mountjoy, the 3xv captain. His devotion to the club and work he's done has been sorely missed. Its such a shame that his case didn't get on Judge Judy, but as LiveTV has now gone (much to Simsy's disappointment around 10pm onwards) Keith was cruelly exiled just like Steve Mcqueen in Papillon ! I hope he still has the hunger for the game and he nutures the young talent coming through at the club (Chris Godsall, Dave Short, Steve Stokes, Nigel Jones). He has the full backing from the players, even to the point that everytime the 3xv scored on saturday, the try scorer lifted his shirt to reveal a "Free the Longlevens one !" T-shirt underneath. Anyway, good luck to all the teams on saturday, let's hope to see wins across the board !!!

Sunday 12th March 2000

An injury time drop goal from Goran Antonijevic sealed a close match for Longlevens 1XV against Combe Down away from home.A difficult fixture for both sides, with "Levens"coming through with seconds to go.

With the 2XV fixture cancelled,Longlevens fielded a very strong 3XV at home against Cheltenham North 3XV.Good performances from Lloyd Thomas around the park and in the lineouts, and a second half debut from Steve Stokes, yet another 17yr old that has been attracted to the club this season, contributed to this enjoyable home win.Backrow player Paul Taylor was man-of-the-match,with a great performance.
With "North" defending for most of the match,an intercepted try was one of there only rewards

Wednesday 8th March 2000

After a two week break,Longlevens 1XV take trip to meet Combe Down in the league. With only one change to last weeks selection,John Norman comes in for Steve Rowan at hooker.

Longlevens 2XV, who this week travel to Bream in the Forest of Dean, have made three changes. Will Speakman Comes into the front row at prop, and Darren Hendry takes over at full back from Eddie Cross, who is on the bench for the firsts.Lloyd Thomas returns at lock, hoping to help Longlevens continue there unbeaten form, with some good lineout work.

With Keith Mountjoy "STILL" not available,Dave Short has made the hooking position for the thirds his own.And with Rob McNaughton also not available for two weeks, the team had some forced changes to make.Hugh Parsons comes in at scrum-half and Stu Burrows at inside center.Paul Churchill comes into the front row, with Darren Mills at lock due to Nigel Jones breaking an eyelash.

Wednesday 1st March

Two tries from Mark(Twister)Entwistle on the wing, and one a piece from center Rich(squire)Yorke and replacement scrum-half Dave(gel)Bryne, two of which were converted completed an enjoyable revenge win for the thirds at Cirencester. After losing at home two weeks ago in the last five mins,It was a was a nice feeling to hear the final whistle.
More points could have been scored if "the squire" had not dropped the ball on the try line, and Steve(daysy)Dey had practised his drop goals.Maybe more training is in order!!!

A reportedly busy night at the clubhouse on Saturday with a Robbie Williams tribute band entertaining everone.
A continuing succcess on the social side of the club has made us one of the major local venues for bands to perform, thanks to Steve Spencer and everyone who helps him.

A date to remember is on the Saturday 8th of April,When band entertainment continues(Band name to follow). This evening is dedicated to raising money for the tour.A well supported evening would be appreciated.

Monday 21st February 2000

This weeks matches produced good performances from a number of players. An excellent debut for Dave Short,at seventeen a good prospect for the future and seemed to cope well at hooker for the thirds.
Also good performances from Paul"Twinny"Davis in the backrow and Mike"Forest"Kemmett at full back also for the thirds. Why he's not in the seconds is another story.

Seventeen year old Chris Godshall had a good all round game at loosehead prop in the seconds win over Matson, also shining was Craig Stone on the wing and Lloyd Thomas in the lineouts. With Rob McNaughton winning the battle at scrum-half,a good all round performance secured a good winning result.

The Firsts, with some forced changes due to non-availabily,found the trip to Redwell Road more difficult than expected, although a steady allround performance keep the scores from widening.A Good solid game from Darren"Melch"Holder was the only thing that stood out for Longlevens.

Wednesday 9th February 2000

Longlevens travel to Midsomer Norton this coming saturday, hoping to continue their league form and gain promotion.

For all you North American visiters,we have news on the Canadian Input to the club.Rob McNaughton has at last earned his right to the scrum-half position in the seconds, due to injury of course.

Friday February 4th 2000

Its league action for the 1xv as they travel to Frampton Cotterell for the re-arranged fixture.Meanwhile, the 2xv entertain Cheltenham Saracens
at home, looking to carry on the form that has seen them score over hundred points in two games. The 3xv are also at home, playing a Tredworth Xv

Monday January 31st 2000

Longlevens finally bow out of the NPI Cup with a narrow loss to Dorset side Dorchester. In wind swept conditions,
the home side scored the only points of the game in the first half.To add insult to injury, No.8 Steve Spencer suffered
a broken nose during the game.

TON UP JOY FOR LONGLEVENS

Monday 24th January 2000

Longlevens 1xv racked up a record score against Worcs side Bromyard 120-3. A total of 18 tries and 15 conversions gave the 1xv the ultimate confidence boost
ahead of this saturday's clash at Dorchester. Man of the Match = Jerry Walters with 4 tries.

The 2xv ran in 10 tries in their re-arranged fixture with Bream. The foresters were outplayed in every part of the game with man of the match Dave Bryne running in
a hatrick of tries.

The 3xv finally found a fixture with local rivals Chosen Hill, albeit their 2xv.In an evenly contested affair, the former pupils scraped home after 'levens lock Lloyd
Thomas failed to ground the ball even though he had passed the try line, due to the opposition throwing him over the dead ball line as he attempted to score closer to the posts !

Thursday 13th January 2000

Longlevens have been a difficult draw in the NPI Cup, away to South West One side Dorchester.
Meanwhile its back to league matters with the 1xv naming an unchanged side at home Gordano.

MONDAY 10TH JANUARY 2000

Longlevens made it to the last 16 of the NPI cup with a convincing win over London side Old Merchant Taylors.
Two tries from Mark Taylor, one apiece from Steve Spencer and NPI man of the match Darren Holder ensured 'levens
to be the only Gloucester side left in the cup with rivals Glos. Old boys losing at home to Dorchester.
Coach Andy Deacon admitted it was a special feeling when he saw details of his side's fine victory flash up on the

SUNDAY 31st OCTOBER 1999

Longlevens poor run continues with a defeat away to Avon.

MONDAY 18TH OCTOBER 1999

LEVENS' TOPPLE NPI FINALISTS

Despite being 3 leagues below their counterparts, Leven's produced the shock of the NPI cup, beating South West One side Stroud at their home ground Fromehall
Park. The ground was filled with support for both sides, including several Gloucester players, notably Phil Vickery who was playing for England only the day
before ! Levens did not disappoint with some outstanding rugby resulting in tries from the powerful Mark Taylor who went over for the first half and set up
wing forward Darren Holder for the second.Levens controlled the game throughout and dominated most of the play, but unfortunately were unable to kill off the
opposition with fly half Goran Antonijetvic having a terrible day with the boot with missing 7 penalties in the second half, but half the ground erupted when
the final whistle went, as the Levens' players were clapped off the park, having beaten a side who had reached the NPI final only two years earlier, with the
celebrations going long into the night !

Longlevens 1xv continue their unbeaten run with a league victory away to Walcot Old Boys of Bath.

Leven's 2xv also beat their counterparts in a thrilling encounter, 22-17.Also prop Justin Thomas, initially ruled out for the season,
made a surprise comeback with a 20 minute run-out.The prop has now decided to continue to play right up to his treatment for the shoulder injury.

THURSDAY 26TH AUGUST 1999

SEASON DESPAIR FOR THOMAS

After consultation with the club physio and medical advice, prop Justin Thomas is set to miss the whole
season due to requiring an operation on his shoulder after suffering further ligament damage in pre-season.
The operation requires the ligaments on the shoulder to be "pinned" as the damage has caused the shoulder to
partially dislocate during movement.

Longlevens take on local side Gordon League in a trial match tonight.

FRIDAY 9TH JULY 1999

Players returned this week from their off season lay off and started pre season training on tuesday.
The club welcomed back former 1xv captain of the 80's Tony Selway, who after a brief spell with Dowtys last season as head coach,

Bristol.
Longlevens 3xv lost away to All Blues despite dominating most of the game, coming away with only a solitary
try by Mark Harris.

WEDNESDAY 7TH APRIL 1999

Longlevens 2xv cruised into the NGC Cup semi finals with a crushing defeat of
lowly Tredworth.Tries rained in from the pace of Mark Entwistle,Brian Williams and
Eddie Cross, as well as forward power of Rob Sims and Geoff Evans, with outside
half Jason Roberts supplying the rest of the points with conversions and penalties.

MONDAY 5TH APRIL 1999

Longlevens finish the league campaign with a loss at home to Chew Valley. The 1xv, depleted
with injuries, having 5 of the 1xv regular forward line stood on the side injured, struggled to contain
the opposition and could only reply with a second half touchdown from winger Mark Entwistle.

WEDNESDAY 31ST MARCH 1999

Longlevens 3xv bowed out of the NGC Cup having nearly clinched victory in the dying seconds.
Having been 12-3 down until the final minutes, 'levens scored and straight from the kick off
broke away from their own 22 and with a kick and chase, nearly scored a match winning try,
only to see the ball roll agonisingly over the dead ball line.

Longlevens 1xv have a prop crisis ahead of this week's last league match of the season at home to
Chew Valley.Front rows Steve Rowan, Justin Thomas and Will Speakman are sidelined through injury
and Andy Watson is unavailable, captain Richard Rudge will have to dig deep into 'levens' squads to find
a replacement.

TUESDAY 23RD MARCH 1999

Prop Justin Thomas is out for the remainder of the season after suffering a fracture
to the collar bone after saturday's defeat. The injury only became apparent on the morning
after, and after treatment from the club physio plus x-rays, the tight head will be sidelined
up to six weeks and will join loosehead partner Will Speakman on the injury list, who is still
recovering from an ankle injury.

MONDAY 22ND MARCH 1999

Longlevens suffered a bitter defeat against their rivals Old Richians in the NGC Cup.
In a match that could of gone either way, 'levens could only match 'Rich's two tries and a penalty,
with three Antonijevic penalties. To add insult to injury, several players picked up long term injuries
with Taylor pulling up with a hamstring problem, Ford also leaving the field with a season ending knee
injury and Thomas who suffered an injury to the collar bone and will see the physio this week like the
rest, to see the extent of the damage.

FRIDAY 19TH MARCH 1999

Apart from the absence of loosehead Will Speakman, Longlevens 1xv are at full strength with
centre Stu Chant returning to the side. The match kicks of at 3pm, with a substancial crowd
expected at Longford Lane, as 'levens take on their bitter rivals, Old Richians.Ironically Longlevens
contain 4 players who were educated at the Sir Thomas Rich's School (Taylor,Chant,Antonijevic and Thomas),
as well as scrum half Gary Watts who spent a season with the Elmleaze outfit.

FRIDAY 12TH MARCH 1999

Centre Jeremy English looks set to miss saturday's trip to Old Sullians, after breaking down in training
with a hamstring injury. He will take a late fitness test, but looks very doubtful, with the possibilty of
the return of Darren Hendry to the side.

Longlevens have signed Mike Foyle back from Gloucester Old Boys. The player, who is set to represent Gloucestershire for
the first time, is inillegible to play in League and Cup for the remainder of the season, but will be a good addition to
the squad prior to the next season.

TUESDAY 10TH MARCH 1999

Will Speakman has suffered a sprained ankle and is set to miss this week's league match. The loosehead
is hoping to return for the cup tie against local rivals Old Richians the following saturday.

FRIDAY 5TH MARCH 1999

MIXED FORTUNES FOR LONGLEVENS FORMER AND CURRENT PROPS

Longlevens 1xv suffered a major injury blow when loosehead prop Will Speakman lost his footing during
a game of touch and had to be carried off the pitch. On closer inspection his ankle was very swollen and
he was taken hospital for x-rays.

Head coach Andy Deacon has been called up to play for England 'A' on the eve of the full international at
Lansdowne Road. The former 'levens tighthead will collect his first cap at Donnybrook much to the delight
of his junior club.

WEDNESDAY 3RD MARCH 1999

All three sides look to kick off at 2pm this saturday, in order to be able to catch the IRE v ENG match
which is sheduled at 4pm.

TUESDAY 2ND MARCH 1999

Longlevens 1xv have been drawn at home against local rivals Old Richians in the second
round of the North Gloucestershire Combination Cup.The tie will be played at Longford Lane
on March 20th.

SUNDAY 28TH FEBRUARY 1999

Longlevens 1xv nearly threw away another league match in the dying minutes as they
overcome Combe Down by a point.Despite leading 21-3 at half time with tries from
Will Speakman, Steve Rowan and Simon Merrett, the second half was a different story.,
with the Bath side coming back to within a point and had two chances to take the lead
with penalty attempts.

The 2xv side also won away with tries from Mark Harris and Mark Entwistle.

WEDNESDAY 24TH FEBRUARY 1999

Hooker Steve Rowan is thrown straight into the 1xv ahead of saturday's league clash against Combe Down.
After returning to training only last week, due to John Norman being unavailable for the home tie, the 1xv
will be hoping that the young hooker's shoulder injury has cleared up completely.

MONDAY 22ND FEBRUARY 1999

Both 1xv and 2xv enjoyed comfortable wins over Pershore.

Neil "Chalky" White has announced his retirement from the game.
The scrumhalf who was the 1xv regular throughout last season and
the first half of this season, is retiring through injury after
sustaining a broken thumb in the NPI clash with Camborne, which has
kept him out of the game since.

WEDNESDAY 19TH FEBRUARY 1999

Richard Rudge has been appointed 1xv captain for the rest of the season. This is a
result of club captain Gary Henderson's injury, which looks set to keep him out of
the remainder of the season.

The injury that Gary Henderson has suffered has now been diagnosed as a partial tear to
the medial ligaments of the knee, plus damage to the hamstring of the same leg.It is unlikely
that he will return before the season ends in april.

Some good news on the injury front, hooker Steve Rowan trained last night for the first time
since injuring his shoulder in January, and will be hoping to play a week Saturday.

MONDAY 15TH FEBRUARY 1999

Longlevens 1xv lost 46-19 to a re-arranged match to Coney Hill.Tries came from
Glen Weatherly, Adie Jones and a penalty try, with Hill only scoring 20
points in the last quarter of the game to give the flattering scoreline.

A dramatic last minute try scored by Mark Entwistle secured a victory over
Drybrook for the 2xv.

Captain Gary Henderson will today see a specialist about the leg injury he
suffered last week.

WEDNESDAY 10TH FEBRUARY 1999

"UNLUCKY DEJA-VU FOR HARRY !"

Club captain Gary Henderson will be out for several weeks after colliding with
prop Justin Thomas during last night's training session.Early reports show that he has
damaged the same knee ligaments that he ironically did this time last year, also colliding
with Will Speakman, another prop, during a training session.

FRIDAY 5TH FEBRUARY

Centre Glenn Weatherly looks set to be called up into the 1xv as Richard Rudge will probably move to
fullback as Darren Hendry is now unavailable due to work commitments.

Good news for coach Andy Deacon as he has been selected in the England 'A' squad ahead of the 5 nations.

THURSDAY 4TH FEBRUARY 1999

Longlevens 1xv and 2xv both have byes in the North Glos Combination Cup with the 3xv
facing a tough away match to Coney Hill. Now that this cup is drawn after every round
the club will hopefully be looking for some success, particularly the 1xv, as the
favourite teams all meet each other,(Matson v Glos.Old Boys and Spartans v Coney Hill).

Coach Andy Deacon will bring another Gloucester player to tonight's training session,
none other than Mark Mapletoft, England's pint size playmaker.

TUESDAY 2ND FEBRUARY 1999

Longlevens' hopes of promotion have all but gone as they went down to a dramatic last minute try
at home to Midsomer Norton.Levens' points came from a try from captain Gary Henderson converted by
Goran Antonijevic, who also added 3 penalties.

FRIDAY 29TH JANUARY 1999

1xv hooker Steve Rowan has pulled out of saturday's game after failing to recover from a shoulder
injury he suffered in last week's fixture, John Norman is drafted into the side.

TUESDAY 26TH JANUARY 1999

Coach Andy Deacon invited Glos full back Audley Lumsden down to a training session last night.
The former Bath player's sessions centred on ball handling and line of running and were very intuitive to the players.

MONDAY 25TH JANUARY 1999

Despite coming back from 19-0 down, 'levens 1xv lost at Cirencester to a penalty from the home side in the final minutes. It
was "a game of two halves" as trailing 19-0 at halftime, with the slope and conditions, 'levens scored three tries in ten
minutes, through Tom Bircher, Stu Chant and captain Gary Henderson.

The 2xv beat Tredworth, who were making their last appearance before the club was closing down.

The 3xv made a trip to Westbury on Severn, who had kindly loaned a pitch for the match with Gloucester All Blues,
which finished 10 points a piece with 'levens tries coming from Rich Yorke and Dave Windridge.

MONDAY 18TH JANUARY 1999

Longlevens 1xv overcome All Blues 13-0 bruising encounter with a try from full back
Darren Hendry, converted by Goran Antonijevic who also added a penalty, and a drop
goal from centre Stu Chant.

The 2xv match with Matson was called off due to a water logged pitch at Redwell Road.

The 3xv, also gained victory over Evesham in an entertaining encounter, running in 7 tries.

MONDAY 11TH JANUARY 1999

Longlevens 1xv suffer a major promotion blow with a loss away to Gordano.

The 2xv had a convincing win 2xv against Gordano 2xv after the visitors were reduced to 14 men early into
the match with one of their props being sent off for fighting.

Longlevens are now joint top of the Gloucs/Somerset league with Barton Hill, check out the table on this site.

Its "same old story" as Longlevens 1xv struggle to defeat a lesser side on Saturday.
The 2xv notch up another victory under new captain Steve Spencer.

MONDAY 7TH DECEMBER

Longlevens bow out of the NPI cup after narrowly losing away to Camborne.
Report to follow..

FRIDAY 4TH DECEMBER 1998

Eddie Cross, having been left out of the initial squad for Camborne, has been recalled for Glenn Weatherly
ahead of tomorrow's clash.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2ND 1998

The Gloucestershire RFU have now awarded Longlevens the two league points after the postponement of September's
away match at Old Culverhaysians. The referee had called the match off before the start due to sub standard
pitch markings, yet the Bath side are appealing against the decision. This will move 'levens to joint top of the
table with fourteen points.

MONDAY 30TH NOVEMBER 1998

The 1XV collect two more league points as they defeat Bristol Saracens and they climb the table
