THE EVIL DEAD

[DAY]

The Evil Force is rushing through a swamp toward the highway, past trees, their stumps, moss, and even an old car. On the highway, the group is in the ’73 DELTA 88 Oldsmobile.

[Inside the Delta 88]

Scotty is driving; Shelly, singing, is in the front next to him. Ash is behind Scotty, in the back reading a map. Linda, Ash’s girlfriend is next to him; Ash’s sister Cheryl is next to her.

SHELLY

I billed you twenty letters from Paris last year. Well, you’ve been gone six months and I’ve got the fear, after all the songs that we’ve sung together, after all the sweet and all the stormy-

[Outside the Delta 88]

The Evil Force is getting closer.

[Inside the Delta 88]

Scotty is singing now, too

SCOTTY and SHELLY

If I knew where you where, well, I would surly inform you that-

[Outside the Delta 88]

CLOSER

[Inside the Delta 88]

SCOTTY and SHELLY

But every night don’t you sleep on your right don’t you wipe your eyes-

[Outside the Delta 88]

The group rounds a corner. The Evil Force is still getting closer. Down the road a red dump truck, Lazy Mary, is coming toward the Delta 88.

[Inside the Delta 88]

SCOTTY

Hey Ash, where are we?

ASH

[Back seat]

Well, we just crossed the Tennessee Border.

[Outside the Delta 88]

Evil Force- CLOSER

Lazy Mary-CLOSER

[Inside the Delta 88]

ASH

Which would put us...

SCOTTY

Yeah?

[Outside the Delta 88]

Evil Force-CLOSER

Lazy Mary-CLOSER

[Inside the Delta 88]

ASH

Which would put us...

[Outside the Delta 88]

Evil Force-CLOSER

Lazy Mary-CLOSER

[Inside the Delta 88]

ASH

Right...

[Outside the Delta 88]

The Evil Force comes to the top of the hill. It can see the Delta 88.

[Inside the Delta 88]

ASH

(pointing to the map)

Here.

The steering wheel of the Delta 88 spins uncontrollably under Scotty’s hands and the car veers wildly.

Ash

(screaming)

TURN!

[Outside the Delta 88]

Scotty regains control just in time to move out of the way of Lazy Mary. Shelly screams a blood-chilling scream; her face plastered against the Delta 88’s passenger side window.

[Inside the Delta 88]

ASH

(exhausted)

What the hell was that? Are you trying to kill us?

SCOTTY

Hey! Don't blame me! It's your steering wheel! Damn thing jerked right out of my hand.

ASH

I can't understand it. I had this thing in for a tune-up yesterday and they said they'd go over everything.

SCOTTY

Yeah! Well you better take it back because the damn thing don't work. The only thing that does work is this lousy horn.

Scotty honks the horn.

[Outside the Delta 88]

As he does two fishermen on the side of the road wave at him in reply.

[Inside the Delta 88]

SCOTTY

(to the fishermen)

Ah, go to hell! I'm not honking at you! (mad) Jesus Christ.

LINDA

[Back seat]

Hey Scotty, what's this place like anyway?

SCOTTY

(calming down)

Well, the guy that's renting it says it's an old place. Little run down, but it's right up in the mountains. And the best part is that we get it so cheap.

LINDA

Yeah, why are we getting it so cheap?

SCOTTY

Well, I don't know. Might be in real bad shape.

CHERYL

[Back seat]

(to Scotty)

You mean, nobody's seen this place yet?

SCOTTY

Well, not yet.

ASH

Well, it might not be that bad.

LINDA

(to Ash)

No.

ASH

Actually, it might be kind of nice.

LINDA

(to Ash)

Yeah.

SHELLY

(to herself)

It's probably a real pit.

ASH

(to Scotty)

Hey, I think this is where we get off.

[Outside the Delta 88]

The group pulls up to on old wooden bridge. There is a sign. It reads:

DANGEROUS BRIDGE

TRAVEL AT OWN RISK

3 TONS

LOAD LIMIT

The Delta 88 drives onto the bridge. Pieces of wood are falling off right and left.

[Inside the Delta 88]

CHERYL

(worried)

This is the bridge we're going to cross?

SCOTTY

Jesus Christ! The whole thing's falling apart on us!

ASH

Don't let the noise fool you girls, this thing is solid as a rock.

[Outside the Delta 88]

Just as Ash finishes, the left-rear tire plunges through a plank. Ash opens his door and looks down as more wood falls into the water below. Ash, startled, quickly closes his door. Scotty laughs at Ash as the Delta 88 pulls off of the shaky bridge. The group continues toward the cabin. As the group slowly rolls up, a banging sound can be heard. Scotty parks the car. The banging sound is a wooden love-seat swing on the front porch; it is slamming into the cabin’s side. The group emerges from the parked car; Scotty travels up the walk towards the cabin looking back briefly at the group. Scotty reaches the door and feels above the frame for a key ring, he finds it and brings it down. The swing stops.

SCOTTY

It's supposed to be one of these on here.

Scotty, apparently shaken stares at the swing while struggling to open the cabin’s door, wrong key; He succeeds the second time.

[Inside the Cabin]

Scotty flips the lights and looks around.

[Outside the Cabin]

Ash and the girls are unloading the Delta 88.

ASH

C'mon!

LINDA

Hey!

ASH

Hey!

Ash catches a bag.

ASH

Hey!

Ash catches a bag.

ASH

Humph!

A bag sails into Ash’s gut.

[Outside the Cabin]

[Inside the Work-shed]

Scotty investigates the work-shed, as the sun sets on the cabin.

[EVENING]

[Inside the Cabin]

Cheryl is sitting in the living room drawing a clock. The clock is set above the cellar door; it has a pendulum that is swinging back and forth, back and forth. The chime sounds eight times, wind blows in through the open window beside Cheryl. She looks out the window.

EVIL FORCE

Join Us. Join Us.

Suddenly, she grips the pencil tightly; her hand starts to draw on it’s own. The paper blows back to a clean sheet. Her face is twisted in confusion; she doesn’t understand what is happening. Cheryl's hand stills, she looks at her paper, there is a box, no, a book, with a face on it. Then, the cellar door suddenly rattles like there is someone below trying to get out.

[LATER]

A blender is full of some red liquid; it is turned off, then removed. The group is at the table talking and eating.

SCOTTY

(whispering to Cheryl)

It barks in the cellar. It barks in the cellar.*

CHERYL

(annoyed)

Will you stop it?

ASH

(standing)

I would like very much to make a toast here for all this evening. Ah, as a Greek friend of mine once said, he said, "I..." Oh OK, OK, OK, "Nis Nis to..to…to…to tarine."*

CHERYL

Which means?

SCOTTY

Party down! Yeah!

All of a sudden the cellar door in the next room bursts open. The group runs over; they peer down into the dark abyss of the cellar.

 ASH

What is this?

LINDA

Whatever it is, it's still down there.

CHERYL

I don't like cellars. Let's just close it up. Its probably just some animal.

SCOTTY

An animal? An animal? HAHAHAHAHAHA! That is the stupidest thing I ever heard of. Jesus Christ.

SHELLY

There's something down there.

LINDA

Maybe it is just some animal.

SCOTTY

Yeah, you're probably right… probably just some animal. Here Cheryl, why don't you go down 'n check, make sure?

CHERYL

Scotty! I'm not going down there!

SCOTTY

OK, OK, you cowards, I'll go.

SHELLY

Be careful.

SCOTTY

Back in a minute.

Scotty takes the flashlight and heads down in to the black unknown. Ash, Cheryl, Linda, and Shelly all stand around waiting for Scotty to say something or come back up. There are quite a few moments of anxious silence, then Ash bends down and peers into the darkness of the open cellar.

ASH

Hey Scotty, you find anything? Scotty. Scotty! Scott!

Shelly comes over and stares into the cellar with Ash.

SHELLY

He's just kidding around... isn't he?

ASH

Scotty! Scott! (turning) Linda, get me a flashlight.

Ash hops onto the cellar stairs.

LINDA

(to Ash)

That's the only one we brought up.

ASH

Then get the lantern.

Linda hands Ash the lantern and he descends the stairs into the black unknown after Scotty.

[Inside the Cellar]

Ash reaches the bottom of the stairs. He looks around and gets his bearings.

ASH

Scotty?

The pipes in the ceiling drip; it is so quiet you can hear every drop hit the floor. Suddenly there is a loud BOOM. Ash looks ahead to see a door, he continues through the cellar. Ash opens the door to discover a boiler room. He walks very cautiously, looking for Scotty.

SCOTTY

Boo!

Scotty jumps out at Ash scaring the wits out of him.

SCOTTY

(laughing)

Hey, come here. I wanna show you something.

Scotty leads Ash to a table; there is an odd assortment of things, a Scimitar, a book, a tape recorder, a single barreled shotgun, and on the wall an old ‘THE HILLS HAVE EYES’ poster.

SCOTTY

Look at all this stuff. (holding the gun) I bet this still shoots.

ASH

Probably does.

Scotty takes the gun and aims it at Ash’s face. As looks up and is again scared out of his mind by Scotty. They both get a good laugh at Ash’s scare. Ash picks up an old book, it’s made of some tough looking leather: it seems to have a face.

ASH

Oh God. Look at this.

Ash flips through the pages of the book; there are pictures and diagrams of skulls, monsters, eyes, demons, and some kind of writing that is unintelligible.

SCOTTY

Look at this.

Scotty holds the Scimitar, the blade is pretty big and seems to be made of real bones, it has a skull on the end, and it looks like it is wearing a ribcage helmet.

 SCOTTY

This kind of looks like your old girlfriend.

Again they both get a good laugh.

SCOTTY

C'mon, let's take this stuff upstairs. I'll grab the recorder and you get everything else.

Ash continues to look through the book after Scotty is gone, he flips to the next page; it is a picture of the book, its face in an evil grimace, it is engulfed in flames.

[NIGHT]

[Inside the Cabin]

While lightening flashes outside the cabin, the group is huddled around the tape recorder inside, talking.

SCOTTY

This guy was a real turd ya’ know everybody hated him… everybody.

SHELLY

(to Scotty)

Like… like you kind of?

SCOTTY

(joking)

Yeah just like me… I’m gonna break your face! Also he’s into this western stuff, he makes all of these little models-

ASH

OK, shhhh, listen to this. This is the tape I found downstairs.

Ash turns on the recorder.

PROFESSOR

(on recorder)

It has been a number of years since I began excavating the ruins of Candar with a group of my colleges. Now my wife and I have retreated to a small cabin in the solitude of these mountains. Here I continued my research undisturbed by the myriad distractions of modern civilization and far from the groves of academe. I believe I have made a significant find in the Candarian Ruins: a volume of Ancient Sumarian burial practices and funerary incantations. It is entitled "Naturon Demonto"- roughly translated, "Book of the Dead". The book is bound in human flesh and inked in human blood.

Linda, nervously, takes Ash’s hand. Thunder booms outside; Scotty and Shelly move closer together.

 PROFESSOR

(on recorder)

It deals with demons and demon resurrection and those forces, which roam the forest and dark bowers of man's domain. The first few pages warn that these enduring creatures may lie dormant but are never truly dead. They may be recalled to active life through the incantations presented in this book. It is through recitation of these passages that the demons are given license to possess the living.

Cheryl switches the tape off.

SCOTTY

(to Cheryl)

Hey! What did you do that for? It was just getting good.

CHERYL

(nervous)

I just don't want to hear it anymore that’s all.

SCOTTY

(picking on Cheryl)

OOoooOOOooOOOOoooOOo.

ASH

Scotty, c'mon. Leave her alone, man.

SCOTTY

Hey, c'mon, I just want to hear the rest of it. No big deal.

Scotty fast-forwards the tape a little bit then clicks play; the Professor is reciting the demon resurrection passages.

PROFESSOR

(on recorder)

Tatra Ormistroben azarta

The leaves outside the cabin are rustling; a smoke is rising from beneath.

PROFESSOR

(on recorder)

Tantermono monzezonzomozezobar

A strange red glow is coming from them now.

PROFESSOR

(on recorder)

Zomontorozo dalhiclerdom deridsa Candar

CHERYL

(getting scared)

Shut it off.

PROFESSOR

(on recorder)

Candar

The light is bright now and the leaves are rising into the air.

CHERYL

(frightened)

Shut it off.

PROFESSOR

(on recorder)

Candar!

Cheryl screams… horrified.

CHERYL

Shut it off!!!

Cheryl is scared to the point of hysteria, then a branch flies through the window and she runs off.

SHELLY

(concerned)

Cheryl, where're you going?

ASH

(examining the broken window)

I can't believe this. Scott, you knew not to play that! I mean c'mon, you knew it was upsetting her. You just don't know when you're taking something too far.

SCOTTY

Hey, don't give me that! You were playing it too. You could of shut it off. I mean big deal! She's nuts. I mean it's just a joke, c'mon! Jesus Christ. She acts like she's three years old or something.

Ash pulls the string and the shutters close.

[LATER]

[Outside the Cabin]

It is pitch black now outside the cabin. The moon is full and yellow; lightning streaks the sky.

[Inside the Cabin]

Ash and Linda are sitting alone in the living room of the cabin.

ASH

Listen, why don't we stay up for a while and listen to the storm?

LINDA

All right, yeah. Let me check on Cheryl first to make sure she's OK.

Linda leaves to check on Cheryl. Ash produces a small box; it is blue with hearts on it. He holds it lightly and pretends he’s asleep. Linda comes back and notices the box. She reaches for it; Ash opens his eyes to watch her. She looks at Ash; his eyes are closed. She reaches again for the box; Ash opens his eyes to watch. She looks at Ash, his eyes are closed…then he opens them, a moment too soon.

LINDA

(pointing to Ash)

Ah Ha!

ASH

Awww, stealing from the blind, huh? (He takes the box) This is for you. (He gives it back to her)

She opens the box to find a silver magnifying glass necklace.

LINDA

Ash, how sweet of you, would you put it on?

ASH

Oh, sure.

Ash puts the necklace around Linda’s neck.

ASH

I was going to give it to you before we came up here, but things got so hectic, this is really the first chance we've had to be alone. Take a look.

Linda gets up and goes to look at herself in the mirror.

LINDA

Oh Ash! It's beautiful. I really love it. I'll never take it off.

They embrace.

The Evil Force watches Ash and Linda through a window while they kiss. It moves around to the other window and looks at them again as they go to the fireplace. It then moves to Scotty and Shelly’s room, Shelly is getting undressed. It moves on to Cheryl’s room. She is sitting at the desk brushing her hair; she looks at the picture of the book that she drew earlier.

EVIL FORCE

Join us!

Cheryl gets up and looks through the window, she ties her robe and goes out the door.

[Outside the Cabin]

Cheryl goes out and explores the woods.

[In the Forest]

CHERYL

Is anybody out there?

She walks deeper into the forest, the storm has stopped and the moon is huge.

CHERYL

I know someone's out there. I heard you, I heard you in the cellar.

A tree cracks and surprises Cheryl. The Evil Force has heard the girl and it is coming. Small vines and branches begin to come for Cheryl. The vines wrap around her legs and arms. They rip her robe off her body and trip her to the ground. The branches hold Cheryl and force her legs open. A vine whips into Cheryl with a snap. It rapes her. She is helpless as the Evil Force gets closer. She finally breaks free, then gets up and runs tripping, back to the Cabin as the Evil Force chases her.

 CHERYL

Ashley!

She gets to the cabin door. Cheryl reaches above the doorframe for the keys. The keys get stuck and she fumbles with them; she drops it. Cheryl hurriedly bends down to pick it up as the evil force comes nearer still. A hand grabs her arm startling her; it’s Ash. He takes Cheryl inside and closes the door just as the Evil Force reaches it. It groans in despair as it retreats back into the woods.

[Inside the Cabin]

The group is all worried about Cheryl.

ASH

(concerned)

What the hell happened to you? Cheryl, what's the matter with you? Did something in the woods do this to you?

CHERYL

(crazed)

No! It was the woods themselves; ugh they're alive, Ashley! The trees! They're alive.

LINDA

Ash, why don't I take her in the back room so she can lie down?

CHERYL

(crazed)

I'm not lying down! I want to get out of here. I want to leave this place right now. Right now Ashley!

SCOTTY

Wait a minute. I sure as hell am not leaving any place tonight.

SHELLY

Cheryl.

LINDA

Cheryl.

ASH

(concerned)

Cheryl, there's nothing out there. Trees do not attack people.

CHERYL

(crazed)

Ashley! Will you drive me into town or not?

ASH

(trying to calm her down)

What? Right now?! Look, sure, sure, I'll take you into town, but just listen to what you're saying.

CHERYL

(crazed)

I don't care how it sounds. I wanna get out of this place right now.

ASH

OK, maybe you could stay somewhere in town tonight.

Ash grabs his coat and the siblings leave the Cabin.

[Outside the cabin]

Ash and Cheryl get inside the Delta 88; Ash tries several times to start the car…It won’t turn over. Linda, Scotty, and Shelly start to watch from the porch.

CHERYL

I know it's not gonna start. It's not gonna let us leave.

Just then …it starts up, making Cheryl look all the more crazy; the porch people retreat inside as Ash backs out into the darkness.

Ash drives a little way then slows to a stop just short of the bridge.

CHERYL

(nervous)

Why are you stopping?

ASH

Wait here a minute.

Ash exits the Delta 88.

CHERYL

Do you see something? Where're you going? Ashley?

Cheryl exits the Delta 88.

CHERYL

Ashley?

Cheryl walks down the dirt road a little ways, suddenly a branch bursts out of the woods in front of her, frightening her. Cheryl carefully continues down the road. She gets to the end and sees that the bridge has been bent upward into sort of a fist. She realizes that they can’t leave and runs back to the car. Ash takes hold of Cheryl and tries to calm her.

CHERYL

(screaming)

It's not going to let us go! It's not going to let us go! I told you! I told you! It's not going to let us go! Why won't you listen to me?

Cheryl collapses onto the ground sobbing and pleading into the dirt, while Ash tries to comfort her.

[LATER]

[Outside the Cabin]

Scotty raises the ax high and chops the log in two. He gathers it up and goes back in the cabin

[Inside the Cabin]

Ash sits, listening to the recorder again.

PROFESSOR

(on recorder)

I know now that my wife has become host to a Candarian demon. I fear that the only way to stop those possessed by the spirits of the book is through the act of bodily dismemberment. I believe now to avoid this horror, but for myself, I have seen the dark shadows moving in the woods and I have no doubt that whatever I have resurrected through this book is sure to come calling... for me.

Linda and Shelly are playing a card guessing game. Shelly holds a 9 of diamonds.

LINDA

OK, Ah, let me think. Ummm... It's a seven.

SHELLY

(surprised)

Oh! What suit?

LINDA

Ahh... diamonds. N-n-no wait! Ummm, hearts!

Shelly pretends that Linda got it right.

SHELLY

(surprised)

Oh My! It's seven of hearts! You're right!

LINDA

(happy)

Hey Ash! I guessed the card right!

ASH

(getting into the tape)

Yeah... truly amazing, Linda.

LINDA

I don't know. I don't know, but I think it's really some sort of extra sense or something, you know, like ESP?

SHELLY

OK, try this one.

Shelly holds an 8 of hearts.

LINDA

(all-knowing)

OK... It's a seven.

SHELLY

(surprised)

I don't believe it!

Shelly holds up another card. Cheryl sits, looking out of the window. She suddenly starts to speak.

CHERYL

... of spades.

The girls look at Cheryl.

CHERYL

Queen of Spades.

Shelly holds up a series of cards.

CHERYL

Four of Hearts. Eight of Spades. Two of Spades. Jack of Diamonds. Jack of Clubs!

Cheryl turns around to reveal that she is a deadite. Her face is a pale blue, her eyes are swollen and white; the pupils are gone… She flies up in the air and hangs there suspended like a marionette.

DEADITE CHERYL

Why have you disturbed our sleep? Awakened us from our ancient slumber? You will die! Like the others before you. One by one we will take you.

The Deadite Cheryl collapses to the floor. Scotty walks in.

SCOTTY

(concerned)

What happened to her?

LINDA

(worried)

Did you see her eyes? Oh Ash, I'm scared. What's wrong with her?

Ash and Linda walk carefully over to see about the unmoving Cheryl. The Deadite Cheryl secretly grabs a No. 2 pencil and attacks Linda. The Deadite Cheryl buries the pencil deep within Linda’s ankle. Linda screams as the Deadite Cheryl twists the pencil around inside her leg.

The Deadite Cheryl pulls the pencil out and Ash grabs her hand on the way out. The Deadite Cheryl backslaps Linda so hard that she flies against the wall, the she grabs Ash by the neck and throws him crashing into a bookshelf.

The Deadite Cheryl gets up still holding the pencil; it is broken and covered in blood. She walks, her face twisted in a possessed rage, toward the struggling Ash.

SCOTTY

(angry)

Cheryl, stop it!

The Deadite Cheryl throws Scotty against the door like a rag-doll. She continues on toward Ash when Scotty smacks her across the face with the handle of the ax. The Deadite Cheryl falls toward the open cellar; Scotty kicks her in the face.

DEADITE CHERYL

Join us!

Scotty hits the Deadite Cheryl in the face with the ax-handle a few more times and locks her in the cellar.

[LATER]

Ash goes in to check on Linda. He pulls a blanket over her and kisses her on the cheek. He stands up and goes toward the door.

In the living room Scotty and Shelly are sitting near the fireplace. The Deadite Cheryl is in the cellar watching them. Ash comes in the room.

SCOTTY

Ash, I think we ought to get outta here.

ASH

Yeah.

SCOTTY

We still have a few more hours before morning.

SHELLY

I don't think I can wait that long.

Scotty stands up.

SCOTTY

You have to. We all have to! And then in the morning, we'll get in the car, and we'll take the bridge. And-

Shelly stands up.

SHELLY

Why does she keep making those horrible noises?

She stares at the Deadite Cheryl.

ASH

I don't know!

Shelly grabs at her hair and sits down staring at the Deadite Cheryl.

SHELLY

Her eyes! What about her eyes? For God's Sake! What happened to her eyes?

The Deadite Cheryl laughs maniacally in the cellar.

[Outside the Cabin]

The Evil Force is approaching the cabin.

[Inside in the Cabin]

SCOTTY

Everything's going to be all right.

[Outside the Cabin]

The Evil Force is in front of the cabin.

[Inside the Cabin]

Shelly gets up and goes toward the window.

[Outside the Cabin]

The Evil Force is looking at Shelly.

[Inside the Cabin]

SHELLY

Scotty, I-I think there's something's out there.

Scotty gets up and goes toward the window.

[Outside the Cabin]

The Evil Force is watching Scotty and Shelly.

[Inside the Cabin]

Scotty puts his arm around Shelly; he leads her away from the window.

SCOTTY

Go to bed, and get some sleep, OK?

[Outside the Cabin]

The Evil Force watches as Scotty and Shelly walk away.

[Inside the Cabin]

Shelly exits the living room and goes into her room.

[Outside the Cabin]

The Evil Force follows.

[Inside the Cabin]

Shelly pulls back the curtains and looks out her window.

[Outside the Cabin]

The Evil Force breaks through the window.

[Inside the Cabin]

SHELLY

AAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scotty is in the living room fiddling with the Scimitar; Ash is on the couch. They both look up when Shelly screams. Scotty stands up and goes into Shelly’s room to investigate. He walks around and sticks his head out of the broken window. Scotty looks both ways…nothing. He picks up a piece of the broken window and hears a noise. It’s in the closet; Scotty pulls back the curtain…nothing.

He notices the bathroom door is ajar.

SCOTTY

(unsure)

Shelly?

Scotty goes into the bathroom. He pulls back the shower curtain and… nothing. He turns around to leave, when all of a sudden; a hand grips him by the throat and slices him down his face with its fingernails. Scotty scrambles out of the room, the Deadite Shelly attached, scratching and biting him. Scotty throws her off and she falls in the fireplace. The Deadite Shelly screams in agony as the flames consume her face. Scotty, realizing what’s happening, drags her out.

DEADITE SHELLY

Thank you. I don't know what I would have done if I remained on those hot coals, burning my pretty flesh. You have pretty skin. Give it to us!

She clamps herself once more onto Scotty’s neck. The Deadite Cheryl is banging to get out of the cellar. Ash comes to help Scotty but is backhanded once more into the bookshelf by the Deadite Shelly.

DEADITE SHELLY

Join us. Join us...

The Deadite Shelly pushes Scotty’s head toward the fire.

DEADITE SHELLY

Join us!

The Deadite Shelly grabs the Scimitar. She raises it up high and tries to stab Scotty; he stops it and reaches back for his hunting knife. Scotty cuts the hand holding the Scimitar nearly off, as Ash finally gets out from under the bookshelf. The Deadite Shelly proceeds to chew the rest of her hand off. Ash takes up the ax, but is stopped when he witnesses the Deadite Shelly’s self-mutilation act. Scotty now takes up the Scimitar and stabs the deadite Shelly in the back. She screams in pain as the blade punctures her, "pretty flesh." Her blood is spewing out of the skull’s mouth on the end of the Scimitar. The Deadite Shelly lies down on top of the Scimitar and it goes all the way through her.

White liquid sprays out of her mouth and from the stump of her hand as she slowly dies. Scotty looks to Ash; Ash just kind of smiles as to say; "You did it!" Scotty begins to walk over to Ash, but he never makes it. The Deadite Shelly attacks him; she stands up and shambles closer to him.

SCOTTY

Hit her! (closer) Hit her! (closer) Hit it!

Scotty takes the ax from the stationary Ash and dismembers the Deadite Shelly’s body, piece by piece. Afterwards, the pieces of the corpse still twitch, almost like they still need to attack.

ASH

Scott.

SCOTTY

Yeah?

ASH

(shaky)

What is- What are we going to do?

SCOTTY

We're going to bury her.

ASH

(shaky)

We can't bury Shelly. She's a- she's a friend of ours.

SCOTTY

Ash, she's dead. Shelly's dead. We gotta bury her now.

Ash and Scotty carry Shelly’s pieces out of the cabin in a bloody sheet, Ash tripping and stumbling along the way. The two boys dig their deceased friend a grave, cover her up, and mark her final resting-place with a cross.

[LATER]

[Outside the Cabin]

The Evil Force is outside of the cabin, wandering around.

Scotty and Ash are looking in through one of the cabin windows, talking to each other.

ASH

Linda's still sleeping. I think once her leg-

SCOTTY

I'm getting out of here.

 ASH

Scott, we can't take Linda anywhere with her leg like that. We don't even know if there is any other way back besides the bridge.

SCOTTY

Well, maybe there's a hiking trail, or an old road or some other way around the cliff. I mean there's gotta be another way besides the bridge.

ASH

Listen to me. Linda cannot walk with her leg like that. She can't even stand up.

SCOTTY

Well, then we'll leave her here. Until we can send somebody back.

ASH

(surprised)

What? Are you crazy?

SCOTTY

(not caring)

Look! I'm getting out! I don't care what happens to her. She's your girlfriend; you take care of her. I'm getting the hell out of here. Right now!

Scotty takes the flashlight and leaves.

[Inside the Cabin]

As Ash enters the cabin, the Deadite Cheryl begins to speak to him.

DEADITE CHERYL

Soon all of you will be like me, and then who will lock you up in the cellar?! Hahahahahahahaha!

Ash goes into Linda's room to check on her, he pulls back the covers to look at her ankle. The wound turns black and spider-web-like marks streak out from it. The Deadite Linda’s eyes bolt-wide open. She sits straight up in bed, giggling, hysterically.

Ash runs from the room and out onto the porch in fear. He is looking down the hall when Scotty, badly wounded, jumps out to him from beyond the porch.

He has been severely beaten; his face is cut up, bruised, and torn. His legs are sliced open, and pieces of wood are sticking out from him.

SCOTTY

Ash! Ash!

ASH

Oh My God!

SCOTTY

Help me! Help me, Ash

Ash leads Scotty over to the couch. The Deadite Linda is sitting in the doorway, giggling sadistically.

ASH

Scotty. You're going to be OK. You're going to be just fine. You'll see.

Ash walks over to the fireplace, stumbling on a can. The Deadite Linda has a riot of a good time over this.

SCOTTY

(sure)

Ash. It's not going to let us leave. Cheryl- Cheryl was right, we're all going to die here!

ASH

No, we're not going to die.

SCOTTY

We're all going to die. All of us!

Ash comes back over to the couch; he shakes Scotty trying to make his point.

ASH

No, we're not going to die! We're not going to die! We're gonna get out of here. Now listen to me Scotty. Is there a way around the bridge? Scotty! Listen to me please for God's-sake! Scott!

Ash slaps Scotty trying to keep him away from the threshold of death.

SCOTTY

Ash. Ash. I don't wanna die. You're not going to leave me are you Ash? Are you?

The Deadite Cheryl begins to mock Scotty.

DEADITE CHERYL

I don't wanna die. You're not going to leave me here are you? Are you Ash? Hahahahaha

Ash is going into frenzy trying to get some kind of response out of Scotty.

ASH

Scotty! Now c'mon listen to me for God's-sake! Is there a way around the bridge?

SCOTTY

There's a way: the trail. But the trees, Ash, they know. Don't you see Ash? They're alive!

The Deadites laugh insanely at this. Scotty winces and screams from the pain he is in.

ASH

(to the Deadites)

Shut up! Shut up, will you?!

Blood runs out from Scotty’s mouth. Ash gets up and goes over to the Deadite Linda.

ASH

Shut up!

Ash beats on the Deadite Linda for a while to no avail.

SCOTTY

Kill her. Kill her…

DEADITE CHERYL

Kill her if you can lover-boy.

Ash gets the shotgun and aims it at the Deadite Linda’s head.

ASH

God forgive me Linda.

Just as Ash is about to pull the trigger, Linda seems to return to normal.

LINDA

Oh Ash, help me please! Ash, help me please Ash. Oh Ash. Please don't let them take me away again. Please.

Ash drops the gun in sorrow as he realizes what he was about to do.

ASH

No, I won't. I won't. I promise.

Suddenly Cheryl’s voice can be heard from the cellar.

CHERYL

Ashley, Ashley, help me. Let me out of here. Ashley? Ash, help me. Let me out of here. I'm, I'm all right now, I'm all right now, Ashley, I'm all right. Unlock this chain and let me out.

Ash lets go of Linda and walks to the cellar.

ASH

(unsure)

Cheryl?

Ash is just about to unlock the chain, when the Deadite Cheryl’s hands come bursting out from the boards. They grab hold of Ash’s face.

DEADITE CHERYL

I'm all right now Ashley! Come unlock the chain and let me out! Ha ha ha I’m all right now. It's your sister, Cheryl.

Ash gets away.

ASH

Ah, you bastards! Why are you torturing me like this? Why?

The Deadite Linda’s laughing can be heard again.

ASH

Shut up!

DEADITE LINDA

We're going to get you. We're going to get you. Not another peep. Time to go to sleep. We- Hahahahaha

Ash grabs the Deadite Linda by the legs and drags her outside.

[Outside the Cabin]

DEADITE LINDA

Useless! Useless! In time we’ll come for him and then we’ll come for you!

Ash returns to the cabin.

[LATER]

[Inside the Cabin]

Ash gives Scotty a glass of water.

ASH

Here. Now, the sun will be up in an hour or so and we can all get out of here together. You, me, Linda, Shelly. Well, no. Not Shelly, she- we’ll all be going home together. Wouldn't you like to be going home? I bet you'd like that, wouldn't you?

The glass falls from Ash’s hand; Scotty is dead.

ASH

Scott?

The Deadite Linda’s laughter can be heard outside. Ash goes to the window; outside, all is quiet. The Delta 88 sits peacefully in the yard. Ash turns from the window and is stabbed in the arm by the Deadite Linda with the Scimitar. He grips his arm in pain; the Deadite Linda cackles. She takes up the Scimitar and licks the blood from it. She then raises it into to air and attacks Ash once more. The former lovers slam each other around and Ash goes falling into the couch, knocking Scotty’s body to the floor. The Deadite Linda runs for Ash but is knocked to the wall by Ash’s feet. She takes hold of the Scimitar’s blade and attacks Ash again. Ash and the Deadite Linda battle back and forth, while the Deadite Cheryl’s hands reach from within the cellar and grab Ash’s foot.

DEADITE CHERYL

Join us! Join us!

Ash directs the Scimitar’s blade to the Deadite Linda’s back. She trips over the body of Scotty and falls, like Shelly had, onto the blade. Blood and the same white liquid spew out of her mouth as she dies. Ash takes hold of Linda’s feet and drags her out into the work-shed.

[Outside the Cabin]

[Inside the Work-shed]

Ash locks Linda into place on the table; he tightens the chains, and prepares the chainsaw for work. He is about to start when he notices the necklace that he gave Linda earlier. He stops the chainsaw and breaks down into sobs.

ASH

Oh Linda...

[LATER]

[Outside the cabin]

Ash carries the body of Linda out into the forest. He begins to dig Linda a grave.

[Inside the Cabin]

The Deadite Cheryl is trying to break out of the cellar.

[In the Forest]

The Deadite Linda’s eyes open. Ash stops digging and looks… her eyes are closed. He continues.

[Inside the Cabin]

The Deadite Cheryl breaks out of the cellar.

[In the Forest]

The Deadite Linda’s eyes open. Ash looks… they’re closed.

Satisfied with the grave, Ash drops his shovel and plants Linda with no problems.

[LATER]

Ash finishes up with the burial. He then turns to leave when something catches is eye; it’s the necklace. He reaches down to pick it up, when the Deadite Linda’s hand shoots out of the grave and grabs his arm. The Deadite Linda escapes from her shallow grave and claws at Ash’s leg. He gets away and finds a large log, he beats the Deadite Linda in the head with it, and then he rams her; she falls to the ground. Ash continues to beat her in the dirt, but she grabs the log and raises Ash into the air. He is thrown off onto Linda’s grave. Ash grabs the shovel he was using to bury her. The Deadite Linda jumps at Ash but connects with the sharp end of the shovel. Her head flies off, laughing, and lands in the dirt beside Ash. The body lands on him. It humps him while blood squirts out of the gaping neck onto Ash’s face.

Ash gets out from under his girlfriend’s body and stumbles back to the cabin.

[Inside the Cabin]

ASH finds the cellar open; the Deadite Cheryl has escaped! Ash slams the cellar door closed in disgust, he then sees Shelly’s door open, and, taking the shotgun, goes to investigate. Ash doesn’t notice the open window, he’s thinking about the closet so, when the Deadite Cheryl jumps out and takes hold of his shotgun he’s fairly surprised. Ash throws the Deadite Cheryl off and shoots her in the shoulder. He runs back into the living room and struggles to close the door. Just as it’s almost closed the Deadite Cheryl’s fingers come through the door. Ash slams them into a pulp with the butt of his shotgun, then closes the door.

ASH

Back door.

Ash runs to the back and closes the door.

ASH

Shells…Where did I see that box of shells?

Ash opens the cellar door and descends.

[Inside the Cellar]

He’s about halfway down when he trips on a can, he sits for a while on the steps, then continues. The pipes that were dripping water before are red with blood. Ash stares at one; it breaks. Ash screams as a waterfall of blood runs over him. Blood seeps from light plugs, cracks in the wall, the inside of a light bulb! Ash is severely shaken, he runs to find the shells. Suddenly, a phonograph opens on its own and begins to play a record. He walks by and a video projector lights up on him. Blood also pours from this and soon the background behind Ash is red. He runs faster through the cellar as sounds from the night come back to him.

DEADITE LINDA

We're going to get you. We're going to get you.

ASH

Shut up, Linda!

SCOTTY

We’re all gonna die

ASH

Shut up!

Ash stops, wipes his face, and then finds the shells.

SCOTTY

All of us!

ASH

SHUT UP!

LINDA

Ash, how sweet of you...

ASH

God forgive me Linda.

He gets some shells.

PROFESSOR

… Is through the act of bodily dismemberment.

He loads the shotgun.

SCOTTY

Hit her

LINDA

I really love it

SCOTTY

Hit her!

LINDA

I’ll never take it off.

SCOTTY

Hit it!

He snaps the shotgun into place. CLICK!

Ash runs back though the cellar as the projector bursts into flames, the light bulb explodes, and the record stops. Blood drips through the pipes as he makes his way back up the cellar steps into the cabin.

[Inside the Cabin]

As Ash reaches the top of the steps the chimes on the clock sound, he watches as the hands spin backwards. He steps out of the cellar and closes the door. There is a sound and Ash turns to face it; his heartbeat can be heard. He is scared out of his mind. Ash shifts position and walks toward a door, he opens it up and the Evil Force rushes in for him. Ash is too quick for it though; he slams the door before it can get to him.

He turns around; the shutters on the windows are opening and closing on their own. Ash runs up to a window and looks outside; this is bad. He walks toward a large mirror. He touches his face to make sure it is actually he, not a deadite. Then ash reaches out to touch the mirror and maybe hang on to his last shred of sanity. His hand goes into the mirror as if it’s made of water. He pulls it out and screams.

The Evil Force passes by the house; Ash shoots through the window in his horror. He walks, gun-in-hand, until his back is against the door. He realizes that he just shot a shell and his chamber is empty.

ASH

Ugh!

He reloads

ASH

Oh come on... come on why are you torturing me like this...?

Ash hears the Deadite Cheryl walking outside and laughs in spite of himself. He is startled to hear the sound fading away.

Ash reaches into his pocket and pulls out the necklace.

ASH

Linda...

He cocks his head to the side, and remembers Linda.

The Deadite Cheryl’s hand burst through the door and wrap around Ash’s face and neck. He drops the necklace.

DEADITE CHERYL

Join us. Join us.

He struggles to free himself and as he does he falls to the ground. He swings the shotgun around and shoots the Deadite Cheryl square in the face through the door. Ash gets up and looks through the hold to see the Deadite Cheryl fall to the ground, and then he begins to barricade the door. Ash brings a table to the door and looks through the hole again.

The Deadite Scotty sits up.

The Deadite Scotty attacks Ash and wrestles his shotgun away from him, while the Deadite Cheryl bangs on the door to get in the cabin. Ash throws a table at the Deadite Scotty; it is tossed away. The Book of the Dead, which was sitting on it, lands near the fire.

Ash breaks a lamp over the Deadite Scotty’s head, while the Deadite Cheryl continues to beat down the door.

Ash, by the neck, is lifted off the ground by the Deadite Scotty, and near blackout sees maybe, his one option. He places his thumbs over his attacker’s eyes and pushes, blood pours out from the sockets. Ash is dropped, as the Deadite Scotty screams in pain. There is a stick embedded in the Deadite Scotty’s stomach. Ash pulls it out, and blood shoots from it like a fountain. The Deadite Scotty collapses to the floor and smoke begins to seep from him. Ash notices that the Book of the Dead is also smoking. He has an idea, but is stopped short when the Deadite Cheryl succeeds in breaking down the door.

His sister punches him in the face and he falls to the ground. The Deadite Cheryl however, does not continue to beat on Ash, thus, he continues for the Book of the Dead. Ash begins to crawl for the fireplace, but the Deadite Scotty takes hold of his leg cutting him off from his goal. He can almost reach it…

The Deadite Cheryl grabs a fire poker. The Deadite Scotty pulls Ash back, his fingernails scraping across the floor. Ash’s hand comes across a familiar figure laid out like a skull; it’s the necklace. Ash begins to toss it at the Book of the Dead on the chance that it might catch, but the Deadite Cheryl begins to beat Ash with the poker. He continues to throw between the hits of the poker and the bites of the Deadite Scotty. He tosses it a final time as he is pulled back again…It catches!

The Deadite Cheryl raises the poker again, but Ash has the Book of the Dead, he throws it into the flames of the fire. The deadite smolder as the flames envelop the book. The poker drops from the hands of Ash’s sister to land not centimeters from his head. The deadites begin to fall apart. Their skin peels away, their hair falls off. Inside the fireplace the Book of the Dead has come to life, it’s tongue gropes around tying to put out the flame, but it can’t.

All is quiet when all of a sudden giant hands burst through the deadites. Blood flies onto Ash as their intestines are thrown about. Parts of the deadites begin exploding as if bullets have hit. The Deadite Cheryl collapses; her head breaks open on the floor, and brain matter splatters on Ash.

ASH

Oh GGGGGOOOOOOODDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Deadite Scotty's skull caves in, roaches and snakes slither out from the inside of it. The propaganda of the Evil Force is fading away.

EVIL FORCE

Join us. Join us. Join us...

It is over.

Ash stands covered in the blood of his friends and sister. He looks at the clock; it is ticking away normally. He looks at the necklace that saved his life as daylight breaks through the thick forest.

He staggers out from the cabin toward his ’73 Delta 88 Oldsmobile.

[In the Forest]

The Evil Force isn’t through; it has one final chance. It rushes through the woods, into and through the cabin, and straight towards Ash.

[Outside the Cabin]

Ash turns around and…

ASH

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

The Trailer

PROFESSOR

(on recorder)

I have seen the dark shadows moving in the woods and I have no doubt that whatever I have resurrected through this book is sure to come calling... for me.

A large EVIL DEAD logo appears.

The cabin: dark menacing, black mist and fog is flowing over and around it.

CHERYL

No, it was the wood themselves, ugh they’re alive Ashley.

The branches wrap around Cheryl’s legs, her neck, they whip and scratch her.

A lightning bolt hits a tree.

The Deadite Cheryl’s eyes bolt-wide open. She sits up and burys a No. 2 pencil in Linda’s leg.

LINDA

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The Evil Force is moving through the woods.

Scotty flings open the shower curtain, nothing. He turns around and is attacked by the Deadite Shelly.

The Deadite Linda’s eyes bolt-wide open.

The Deadite Cheryl breaks through the cellar door and attacks Ash.

ASH

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

PROFESSOR

I fear that the only way to stop those possessed by the spirits of the book is through the act of bodily dismemberment.

Scotty raises the ax high and brings it down on the Deadite Shelly.

A pile of leaves outside rise up; there is an evil red glow from beneath.

SCOTTY

I don't care what happens to her. She's your girlfriend; you take care of her.

Ash pulls the chain, locks the clip, pulls back the curtain, and starts the chainsaw.

CHERYL

SHUT IT OOOFFFFFFFFFFFF!

The shutters in the window fling open and closed.

ASH

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

The clock’s hands are spinning backwards wildly.

Ash watches.

The Evil Force is chasing Cheryl through the woods.

Ash slams the door shut.

The Deadite Shelly is coming closer.

Ash looks evil.

The Deadite Scotty is collapsing.

The Deadite Cheryl is exploding.

The Evil Force is rushing through the cabin.

Close up on Ash’s eyes.

The Deadite Cheryl's head hits and breaks on the floor.
