They Walked Away...To Race Another Day
What drivers face....
These pictures are proof positive that racing is still a dangerous sport. Nascar has made many safely features to be added to the cars that have had profound effects on the safety of the drivers. Even though the cars are considerably safer than when the sport first started, there is still that risk of a broken bone, smashed car and smashed dream of being in Victory Lane. Or even the loss of a career: Ricky Craven can attest to that fact. That may be the fascination with these men of steel and ice that race their hearts out week after week; performing for us, the FANS. Ernie Irvan is one of the men in Winston Racing I believe is a true Hero. He battled the odds, life or death, and came back fighting. It is a miracle that he is still alive, much less driving a car at those speeds around the very place that almost took his life. He battled back and showed that track he would not be beaten, held down by what happened there. He WON the VERY race that, years before, almost cost him his life. Mr. Irvan is a credit to Nascar and the human race. The 1st weekend at TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY alone claimed 35 cars and numerous broken and/or fractured bones. Any of these wrecks could cause serious injury to these drivers. So when you cheer at a wrecked driver, remember, you could be cheering a serious injury or even a death...
AND
the next lap it could just be YOUR favorite driver crashing.
It takes a heartless person to cheer at a wreck that could cost a child his father, a wife her husband or a mother her son....
