To figure out this paper, standing on your head may be required.  It was published in JCC's newspaper, Jan. 28, 1999.

Which way is East?

It belittles everyone at Jefferson Community College to suggest that some Jefferson students don't know east from west.  When the real problem is that students don't know which room numbers are on which wings of the Jefferson Building.

Intuitively Jefferson students know when they look to the north and point to the right they point to the east.  However, if a few deviants like me are trying to act like our mascot, Jed Clampitt, then the teaching of where's east and where's west should be part of our curriculum.

Why?  Because we have been standing on our heads from birth and we say, "East is to the left."  We enjoy a common sense spatial orientation like everyone else, but we cannot communicate it to non-deviants.

To avoid the whole situation, Jefferson could tear down those mental stumbling blocks, the east and west wings, and provide needed parking space to boot.

On the other hand, with a little overtime Jefferson employees might be able to type in east and west on all listings of room numbers for the Jefferson Building.

Or maybe, Jefferson could emulate other colleges and place a campus map in a central location.  The Jefferson courtyard is an ideal location since the map should show which room numbers are on which wings of the Jefferson Building.

Then the only ones lost on campus would be those naive students who asked one of us deviants for direction.
