- Bernheim
Arboretum and Research Forest With
14,000 acres, it's a great place to see an amazing variety of trees and
shrubs. It has 30 miles of hiking trails, it's a good place to go
for a stroll or just have a picnic. It's located about 25 miles
south of Louisville, KY, on Highway 245 in Clermont, KY. Take
I-65 to exit 112 and go east for about one mile. Open daily, except for
Christmas Day and New Year's Day, from 7 a.m. until sunset. The
Visitor Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (6 p.m. on Saturdays and
Sundays in the summer) daily. Admission is free on weekdays, $5
per vehicle weekends and holidays. Call (502) 955-8512 for information. check out Bernheim's web page
- Western Kentucky Botanical Garden
Located in Owensboro, Kentucky, this garden gem has only recently been
established (1993) and has put into place 6 of 23 planned gardens, each
with a different theme. Grab some barbeque and smell the flowers
along
the way! WKBG website
Garden Tours:
- The Glenview Garden Club has offered up 6 of their club members'
gardens for public viewing. It's usually held in the spring and
tickets are sold at Doll's Market on Brownsboro road. You
can opt for the paid lunch at one of the gardens and I highly suggest
it at least once. the tour and lunch is about $45.
- Cresent Hill also puts on a garden tour of some of it's gardens,
but it always seems to be on the same weekend as the Glenview tour, so
I have never been able to go. The tour covers about 5 gardens, if
I remember the advertisement correctly. it's around $10. I
think it is a great place to see a small garden at work.
Garden shops:
- The Secret Garden is located in Middletown sort of behind Mark's
Feed Store and they have all this artsy fartsy stuff I secretly yearn
for but am too cheap to buy. If you go, have some lunch at the
Cottage Cafe nearby.
- The Garden Wall is at 636 Market street and I think they have
really good stuff, but I have never been. they do have a
website.
- The New Earth Store is located in J-Town, off Taylorsville
Road. They have all kind of doohickys to grow plants indoors or
hydroponically.
