NAME
PUNS
Just as Akira
Toriyama punned the names of nearly all the characters in Dragonball, so
have I done my best to come up with interesting wordplays to use when naming my
own characters. Following are all the puns
utilized in the adventures of the New Ginyu Force, and in the Forgotten
Z-Fighters. Please note that I am
not including the characters that already existed in Dragonball, as
their names are explained on pretty much any mainstream DBZ site.
Coliflur: Based on the vegetable cauliflower.
Slyme: Nameks are named for slugs and snails, and
they tend to leave trails of this substance.
Gong (the pilot), Ding (the communications officer), and Ring (the weapons master): All named for sounds that bells make.
Mesa (the security chief): A flat surface.
Koganut: All Freeza’s henchmen were named for exotic
fruits, so Koganut is named after the coconut.
Tamoto:
As the son of Raditz and Koganut, a vegetable and a fruit, he is named
for the fruit often mistaken for a vegetable, the tomato.
The Pasta Team (Spaghetti, Rigatoni, and
Fettuccini): All named for types of
pastas.
Asparaga: Named for the vegetable asparagus.
Tato:
Named for the vegetable potato.
Frosta:
Like Freeza, Coola, and King Kold, she is named for coldness, in this
case frost.
Yamu:
Named after the sweet potato, the yam.
The Been Team: All named after types of beans, as follows:
Gren:
green beans.
Lyma:
lima beans.
Pint:
pinto beans.
Stling:
string beans.
Frihala:
the Spanish word for beans, frijoles.
Hozrados: Named for the vegetable horseradish.
Zuc:
The vegetable zucchini.
Spanóch:
The vegetable spinach.
Unjun:
The vegetable the onion.
Punkn:
The pumpkin vegetable.
Egplana:

A double pun on the vegetable called the musk melon and her busty
appearance.
Pinapo (Kiwi’s
brother): Like all Freeza’s men, he is
named after a tropical fruit; in this case the pineapple.
Chiaotzu’s guards (Gulf, Lake, and
Pond): Named after bodies of water.
