Who or What is... Bemboysta?!?

A fair question, dear reader, so I'll do my best to answer it. Back when I first created Bembu and Oysta in August of 2001, I was unclear just what their roles would be in the ongoing adventures of the new Ginyu Force. I merely knew that twin Saiyans seemed like a cool idea... and that twin Saiyans who could fuse via the Fusion Dance would be even cooler. With a picture in my mind of what I thought they might look like, I set about designing these girls, and wound up with what you see below:

You do the math.

The girls had been created, and in a rare occurrence, I liked the designs right from the get-go. Their uniquely-shaped faces remain a challenge to draw, but are still enjoyable for me to look at when done right. Also, notice that originally they had tails, since I wasn't certain whether they'd be from Hozrados's group of Saiyan settlers or newcomers from someplace entirely different. As you know now, they did turn out to be Saiyan Settlers, and are in fact the daughters of Hozrados's right hand man, Unjun.

In order to give the twins enough power to hang out with Melonia, who was intended to be their comrade-in-mischief, I decided that in addition to fusing, they'd also possess the ability to go Super Saiyan in their fused form, Bemboysta. For fun, I drew up a mini-comic detailing a first meeting between Mel and the twins, as seen below. This is sort of a "what-if" story, since Bembu and Oysta turned out to be Saiyan Settlers who already knew Mel, but I like it enough that I think it bears posting here. Click the thumbnails below to access the original pages in all their black-and-white glory. By holding your mouse over the thumbnails, you'll get my commentary (if any) on the individual pages.

The Beginning. As you can probably tell, I was really trying to mimic Viz's DB manga translations with the odd sound effects.I'm really proud of the pictures of Bembu in motion on this page. Not much to say about this one. It's... okay.
I like the explosion around Mel in the first panel on this one, and the comical experssions on Bembu's face in the latter panels.I drew the Fusion Dance without visual reference, so forgive me if the twins aren't posed just right.I hate the shot of Bemboysta flying towards the reader. I could have done better if I hadn't rushed. But I DO really like Mel flipping over Bemboysta with one finger.Gotta love Mel's potty mouth.
This was meant to look like an old-fashioned Jack Kirby fighting montage, like the famous silent page where Captain America fights Batroc the Leaper. If I'd colored it, I bet this would look more impressive...Have you noticed how Mel has been progressively losing her clothes in this strip? Good thing the fight's over...Man, Mel's undies don't leave much to the imagination...
Notice how poorly I draw hands closeup. That's why my characters usually have closed fists.

This strip was mostly just an exercise for me to try to draw an actual fight in the DBZ style. I think it turned out all right, for a first outing. Anyway, as we all know, Bembu and Oysta eventually met Melonia during the Captain Ginyu Reborn storyline, but not till the end, as Mel had been trapped in the Dead Zone for most of the twins' scenes in that story. But I decided that they'd hit it off behind the scenes and in the intervening years, which brought Bembu and Oysta to Earth, and back into the spotlight for the Red Ribbon Reborn saga.

Bemboysta Lives! But what of Bemboysta? I eventually decided that fusing Bembu with Oysta would prove too much for the Ginyu story, which already featured the Namekian tri-fusion of Snulurod, as well as Feral Saiyans and androids and Majins and Makyo-jin, and much, much more. Bemboysta was stuffed away in my mind until that day when I might need to give Bembu and Oysta some added power. The original idea was to be that the girls had learned the technique from Snuh, Lug, and Rod, but I don't see any feasable reason for why they'd hang out with those Namekians. By now, if you've read Red Ribbon Reborn, you know how they actually learned the dance, in a fashion which I think is rather creative--and timely, since Mel was really in a pickle at the time.

Finally, as to her costume: Well, I only had two models to work with for this, namely Gotenks and Gogeta, both of whom dress identically when fused. Obviously, an open vest won't work for a girl, so I closed it in the front to make it more of a tank top than anything else. The trim on the vest/tank top is colored red, since Gotenks and Gogeta each had different colored trim as well. As you can see in the strip above, the original design for the costume incorporated an altered design for the vest to make it look more flattering on a female, as well as skintight black pants instead of the normal baggy white trousers. I still like the first design a lot, and may make it Bemboysta's official look instead of the newer one, seen to the right. Either way, though, I think she looks pretty cool.

So, what does the future hold for the fusion of our Saiyan twins? Who can say, for certain? I'm sure she'll play a major part in the next saga, but whether she'll actually go Super Saiyan as I'd originally intended, I can't say. I've already made her fusion stronger than it would normally be due to the fact that not only are the participants the same size, build, power level, etc., but are also twins. That seemed like a very strong bond that would probably amplify the fusion based upon what we know about the technique, so they may not even need the added Super Saiyan power, especially once Bembu learns a certain power up she plans on getting Kiwi to teach her.

Anyway, that's the story of Bemboysta's long journey to the stories of the Ginyu Force. I hope you've enjoyed this latest foray into the behind-the-scenes world of my creative process.
