Powers: Yamu has the utmost level of control over his ki, giving him the powers of flight and energy blasts, as well as the ability to sense ki from others. When he was evil, he attained a transformed state he called the Dark Super Saiyan, which was very similar to the normal Super Saiyan form, except that his eyes became red and his hair white. Also, at full power, a Dark Super Saiyan transformed into a human-sized Golden Oozaru. Now that all evil has been expelled from him, he can transform into a standard Super Saiyan at will.
Background: Once, Yamu was a force of great evil in the universe. He was a powerful Saiyan warrior, and his bloodthirsty demeanor made even his fellow Saiyans pale in comparison. On a mission for King Vegeta, Yamu’s space pod was thrown off course and he crash-landed on a strange jungle planet. It was there, through as-yet-unrevealed means, that Yamu first transformed into a Dark Super Saiyan. He used his great power to enslave the denizens of the planet, but wound up killing most of them for insubordination. Finally, several revered elders cast a spell on Yamu, sealing him into a giant monkey statue for all eternity… or so it was hoped.
Decades later, when Coliflur was missing following her battle with Tamoto, Rocket Warrior and Noklok found themselves on this jungle planet in search of her. In a fit of rage over not finding his leader, Noklok smashed the statue that housed Yamu… releasing him. The Dark Super Saiyan reveled in his newfound freedom and his first action was to viciously maim Rocket Warrior and Noklok. He then took their guide, Rust, as his pilot, and set out for Planet Vegeta. However, when Yamu learned that Vegeta had been destroyed years before by Freeza, he decided to vent by killing the tyrant’s last surviving relative, Frosta. During this conflict, Yamu encountered Nappa, and learned that other Saiyans were alive in the galaxy.
The next Saiyan he met was Coliflur, and Yamu was instantly enamored. He invited her to become his mate and join him in conquering the galaxy. Coliflur agreed, but this was only a ruse to buy time until she could find a way to defeat him. And defeat him she finally did, with the help of her sister Asparaga and a pair of alien gemstones. Through mystical means, Yamu died in the confrontation and was reborn, purged of all the evil in his soul. With nowhere else to go, he then moved to Planet Skwash to live beside those who had defeated him. Realizing the atrocities he had committed in the past, Yamu pledged never to fight again, and to devote his energies to positive causes.
The first such cause was to offer up information regarding Saiyans that might still be alive in the galaxy. Yamu recalled that many years before, King Vegeta had dispatched a group of Saiyan scouts on a long-range mission to spread the Saiyan cause across the galaxy. With Yamu’s help, Melakka was able to pinpoint where those Saiyans might have landed. Coliflur, Yamu, and the rest ventured out into space to find them, and eventually they did—but they also found trouble. The Been Team, an elite group of warriors from old Planet Vegeta, were with the Saiyan explorers, and they were bent on conquering the galaxy as befitted their heritage. While the other Ginyus were occupied, Yamu snuck onto the Been Team’s ship and sabotaged it, buying some time for his allies to think of a plan to defeat the villains.
Eventually, Yamu found himself on Earth with the Been Team, and had no choice but to fight once again to defend the freedom of the humans. With Rocket Warrior, Asparaga, and Nappa by his side, Yamu engaged the Beens in a prolonged battle, holding out until the rest of the Ginyu Force could arrive. Near the end of the day-long confrontation, Yamu joined the fight again, and proved to be one of the strongest warriors on the side of goodness. However, once the battle was over, Yamu once again adopted his pacifist ways.
But as the old saying goes, “You can take the fight out of the Saiyan, but you can’t take the Saiyan out of the fight.” When the reborn Captain Ginyu assaulted Planet Skwash a year later, Yamu once more joined the fray, this time fighting beside Melonia to occupy the captain until help could arrive. This battle, the second in about a year, has caused Yamu to rethink his position on pacifism. He now wonders if perhaps fighting is all right… as long as it’s for the right reasons.
Regardless of his stance on violence, Yamu still stands ready to join the fray when he must. Sometimes he needs extra convincing, but his Saiyan honor will not allow him to stand idly by while his allies are in danger. Recently, Yamu has found himself haunted by pangs of jealousy over Coliflur’s relationship with the human called Yamcha. He still recalls the moments of intimacy he shared with her in his old incarnation, and he feels that Saiyans belong with Saiyans. He would say this to no one, but he can’t help being bothered by it. Whether or not Yamu will act on these feelings remains to be seen.
