Scott County (5-2) vs. Tates Creek (5-2) October 13, 2006

The Scott County ground game has gained 1800 yards this season.  The Cardinals have a stable of excellent backs led by Keith Smith with 620 yards.  Malcolm Clay has added 400 yards.  QB Cody Andrews has completed 21 of 37 passes for 364 yards and seven touchdowns.  Scott County has dropped close decisions to Lexington Catholic and Henry Clay.

The potent Tates Creek ground game has gained 1627 yards.  Ty Sparks has accounted for 1226 yards of that total.  QB Hayden Cardiff has completed 14 of 42 passes for 256 yards and one touchdown.

Scott County led 14-13 in the second quarter but pulled away for a 35-19 victory over Tates Creek.  The Cardinals led 14-0 but Tates Creek rallied with two long-distance TD runs by Ty Sparks to cut the deficit to one point, 14-13, with 6:09 remaining in the half.  However, Scott County scored 21 unanswered points before Tates Creek scored a TD with seconds remaining in the game.

Tates Creek was a bit short-handed tonight as the coach found out this week that QB Hayden Cardiff and his brother Justin, who started on the line, would be leaving the team to move to Georgia with their family.  Another factor that hurt the Commodores was the absence of their regular punter Joe Conlon.  The opportunistic Cardinal defense blocked one punt and a fumbled snap on another punt led to touchdowns.  The Cardinal defense did not have an answer for Ty Sparks in the first half as he rushed for 149 yards of his game-high 191 yards in the first half.

Coach McKee appears to have his Cardinals peaking at the right time and they recorded 20 first downs and 281 yards of total offense tonight.  They didn't suffer any turnovers and were only penalized once for 10 yards in an impressive performance.  Tates Creek had 10 first downs and 231 yards of total offense.  The Commodores fumbled the ball eight times and lost possession twice.  They were penalized five times for 39 yards.

Keith Smith led the Scott County ground game with 114 yards and a TD on 24 carries.  Cody Andrews added 39 yards and a TD on five carries.  Andrews also completed four of six passes for 58 yards.  Jimmie Warren caught two passes for 33 yards.  Zack King led the Scott County defense with five solo and seven assisted tackles.  Jimmie Warren added four solo and six assisted tackles.

Ty Sparks led the Tates Creek ground game with 197 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.  Eric Beatty carried the ball 12 times for 51 yards.  Robert Knowles led the Commodore defense with five solo and eight assisted tackles.  Eric Gwinn added four solo and six assisted tackles and Alan Meadors recorded five solo and three assisted tackles.
