Covington Catholic (7-4) vs. Lexington Catholic (10-1) November 11, 2005
Covington Catholic QB Drew Ellison has passed for 1600 yards and six touchdowns and gained 800 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Kurt Bovard has over 50 receptions for 700 yards and nine touchdowns.
Lexington Catholic QB Justin Burke has passed for 2763 yards with 51 touchdowns and only two interceptions. The dynamic receiving duo of Cornell Burbage and Wes Caldwell have combined for more than 1700 yards and 32 touchdowns.
Lexington Catholic overcame a 31-21 deficit late in the third quarter, scored 21 consecutive points, and held on to earn a 42-39 victory over Covington Catholic. The comeback started when Lexington Catholic faced a fourth-and-ten on the Covington Catholic 49 late in the quarter. Burke avoided a pass rush and completed a screen pass to Shane Israel who took it in for the score. Burke threw two more TD passes to give the Knights a 42-31 lead with 9:42 left in the game. Covington Catholic scored a TD and a two point conversion to pull within three, 42-39, with 6:47 left in the game. Lexington Catholic snuffed out Covington Catholic's last chance with a Ben Revere interception on Lexington Catholic's 29 yard line with 42 seconds remaining on the clock.
Lexington Catholic held a 586-423 advantage in total yardage, but trailed 22-19 in first downs and 27:35-20:25 in clock possession time. Lexington Catholic was intercepted twice and was penalized six times for 46 yards. Covington Catholic was intercepted once and was flagged four times for 30 yards.
Justin Burke led the Lexington Catholic ground game with 97 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Shane Israel added 83 yards on 15 rushing attempts. Burke completed 14 of 28 passes for 370 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. Cornell Burbage caught five passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Wes Caldwell added four receptions for 124 yards with a touchdown. Jacob Locknane led the defense with six solo and six assisted tackles while Pat Schwendeman added eight solo tackles. Will Osborne recorded four solo and four assisted tackles.
Joe Smith led the Covington Catholic ground game with 108 yards and a score on 13 carries. Drew Ellison added 100 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Ellison also completed 10 of 17 passes for 153 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jace Ganshirt had four receptions for 70 yards. Kurt Bovard added three receptions for 22 yards while Peter Sutton recorded two catches for 56 yards. Brandon Brown paced the defense with six solo tackles while Sam Flynn added five solo and two assisted tackles.
