Scott County (2-1) vs. Lexington Catholic (1-1) September 10, 2004

Lexington Catholic Knights opened the season with a 43-42 victory over Boyle County but was hammered 44-7 two weeks ago by St. Xavier.  The Knights have committed 11 turnovers in their first two games.  QB Justin Burke has completed 22 of 58 passes for 393 yards and three scoring strikes, but has been intercepted five times.

This game would appear to be a contrast of styles, pitting the relentless ground attack of the Cardinals featuring Ted Sberna and Percy Hargrove against the big play capability of Lexington Catholic.

Lexington Catholic overcame a 21-13 deficit at halftime to defeat Scott County 33-28 tonight.  It was the Ted Sberna show in the first half as he scored on runs of 65, seven, and four yards to give Scott County the lead at the half.  Lexington Catholic began their comeback in the third quarter and Scott County suffered a major setback when Sberna left the game with an injury.  Lexington Catholic tied the score at 21-21 with 10:04 remaining in the third quarter on a 36 yard TD run by Justin Burke and a two point conversion by Ty Stephenson.  Scott County regained the lead 28-21 on a one yard run by Percy Hargrove and the kick by Jesse Hawkins with 8:23 remaining in the quarter.  Lexington Catholic struck again as Cornell Burbage scored on a 54 yard punt return on a reverse to pull the Knights within on point, 28-27, at the end of the third quarter.  Lexington Catholic missed the conversion kick.

The Knights received a big break in the final period as Tyler Hinkel picked off a Cody Andrews pass and returned it 29 yards to the Scott County 33 yard line.  Three plays later, Justin Burke connected with Cornell Burbage on a 33 yard scoring strike to give Lexington Catholic a 33-28 lead with 6:33 remaining in the game.  Scott County could not move the ball on their next possession and punted to Lexington Catholic, who ran out the clock.

Lexington Catholic held a 452-320 yard advantage on total offense.  Justin Burke led the Knights as he completed 25 of 15 passes for 237 yards and a TD pass.  Burke also carried the ball 19 times for 110 yards and scored on runs of three and 36 yards.  Ty Stephenson carried the ball 16 times for 98 yards.  Cornell Burbage caught seven passes for 76 yards and returned two punts for 94 yards.  David Vincini caught four passes for 133 yards.  Tanner Doss recorded six solo and one assisted tackles, while LB Brandon Logan was credited with five solo and two assisted stops.

Ted Sberna carried the ball 18 times for 199 yards and three scores, and averaged 11.1 yards per carry.  These numbers are even more remarkable considering Sberna missed several minutes of play due to an injury.  William Lewis had four receptions for 90 yards.  Cody Courtney recorded seven solo and one assisted tackles, while Jason Wright added six solo and two assisted tackles.  Jason Rusch chipped in with five solo and five assisted stops including one sack for a minus seven yards.
