Class A Championship

Beechwood (13-1) vs. Danville (10-4) December 3, 2004

Beechwood has won eight football championships and coach Mike Yeagle has been at the helm for seven of those championships since 1989.  Beechwood hopes to avenge a 42-7 championship loss to Danville last year.  Beechwood has averaged 44.7 ppg this season and the defense has allowed 12.1 ppg. 

The Beechwood running attack has been led by 6-1 190 pound Sr. Dustin Menetrey with 2197 yards and 39 touchdowns on 261 carries.  6-0 180 pound Jr. Chris Curley added 624 yards and 13 touchdowns on 89 carries while 5-10 175 pound Jr. Eric Sawyer chipped in with 598 yards and nine touchdowns on 80 carries.  5-11 165 pound Jr. QB Patrick Muth completed 81 of 142 passes for 1505 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.  Sawyer led the receivers with 26 receptions for 574 yards with five touchdowns.  Curley added 21 receptions for 317 yards with three touchdowns.  Sawyer added four intereceptions on defense. 

The Danville Admirals have ten titles overall and Coach Sam Harp has captured seven of the titles (four 2A and three A) since 1989.  The Admirals have averaged 33.9 ppg this season and have allowed 12.9 ppg. 

Danville's offense has rolled up 4256 yards on the ground and 1036 yards through the air.  The ground game has been led by 5-10 190 pound Sr. Kelvin Turner with 2579 yards and 36 touchdowns on 268 carries.  5-11 162 pound Sr. Ronnie Hawkins added 688 yards and four touchdowns on 73 carries.  5-10 165 pound So. QB Jeffrey Guest completed 34 of 67 passes for 623 yards with 11 touchdown passes and two interceptions.  6-1 195 pound Jr. Darius Baughman caught 17 passes for 286 yards with three touchdowns while Ronnie Hawkins added 13 receptions for 337 yards with four TDs.  5-6 187 pound So. LB Darren Ross recorded 44 solo tackles, 66 assisted tackles, and recovered two fumbles while 5-10 184 pound So. DB Jeffrey Hill added 34 solo and 58 assisted tackles.  5-8 140 pound So. DB Daylen Morris and Ronnie Hawkins recorded five and four interceptions respectively.

Beechwood avenged a 42-7 championship game loss to Danville last year by defeating the Admirals 23-7 to claim the Class A Championship.  The Tigers controlled the line of scrimmage and took advantage of Danville turnovers to win the game.  The key play came late in the second quarter when Beechwood discovered a fumble on the Danville 28 yard line with the score tied 7-7.  Patrick Muth capitalized by connecting on a 25 yard pass to Eric Sawyer to give Beechwood a 14-7 halftime lead.  The Tigers outscored Danville 9-0 in the second half to ensure the victory. 

Beechwood held a 336-158 yard advantage in total offense and enjoyed a 15-8 margin in first downs.  Beechwood averaged 6.1 yards per play on 55 plays while Danville could only manage 4.0 yard per play on 40 plays.  Beechwood had one pass intercepted and was penalized one time for five yards.  Danville had two passes intercepted, lost two fumbles, and was penalized five times for 25 yards.

Dustin Menetrey led Beechwood's ground attack with 187 yards on 34 carries.  Eric Sawyer added 54 yards on 10 carries.  Patrick Muth completed four of eight passes for 86 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.  Eric Sawyer caught two passes for 84 yards with two touchdowns.  The Tiger defense held Kelvin Turner, who had rushed for 184.2 yards per game in 14 previous games, to only 76 yards with only 20 yards coming in the second half.

Kelvin Turner led the Danville ground game with 76 yards on 18 carries while Ronnie Hawkins added 38 yards and a TD on nine carries.  Jeffrey Guest completed three of nine passes for 35 yards with two interceptions.  Darius Baughman caught three passes for 35 yards.

Class 2A Championship

Belfry (13-1) vs. Owensboro Catholic (10-4) December 3, 2004

Coach Philip Haywood's Belfry Pirates utilized an option attack that rolled up 4854 yards on the ground this season.  5-10 205 pound Sr. Doug Howard carried the ball 165 times for 1790 yards with 26 touchdowns.  5-10 179 pound Sr. David Jones gained 1621 yards with 28 touchdowns on 142 carries.  6-2 186 pound Sr. QB Adam Warren completed 30 of 48 passes for 722 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions.  David Jones caught 10 passes for 263 yards with three TDs while 5-10 150 pound Jr. Matt Maynard caught nine passes for 211 yards with two touchdowns.  5-9 185 pound Sr. Michael Hackney led the defense with 107 tackles while David Jones intercepted four passes.

Coach John Edge's Owensboro Catholic squad rolled up 4434 yards for the season.  6-4 210 pound Sr. QB Zach Barnard completed 261 of 395 passes for 4271 yards with 49 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.  5-11 155 pound Sr. Heath Wright caught 78 passes for 1511 yards with 18 touchdowns.  5-11 160 pound Jr. Jacob Randolph added 61 receptions for 1220 yards with 14 touchdowns.  5-9 165 pound Jr. Houston Kamuf led the ground attack with 1085 yards and 11 touchdowns on 161 carries.  6-0 180 pound Sr. LB Adam McBride, 5-9 160 pound Sr. LB Ted Evans, and 6-1 260 pound Sr. TD Will Millay led the defense with 183, 132, and 113 tackles respectively. 

Belfry rolled up 526 yards on the ground and DB Chris Varney made two key interceptions in the fourth quarter to secure a 28-21 victory over Owensboro Catholic.  This was an especially satisfying victory for Belfry as they graduated nine starters on offense and more than half the defense from last year's championship squad.

Belfry held a 526-397 advantage in total offense and enjoyed a 27-14 margin on first downs.  The Pirates ran 79 plays compared to 47 plays for Owensboro Catholic and held a 33:31-14:29 advantage in possession time.  Belfry gained 526 yards on the ground while Owensboro Catholic passed for 383 yards.  Belfry had a pass intercepted, lost a fumble, and was penalized five times for 43 yards.  Owensboro Catholic had two passes intercepted and was flagged eight times for 51 yards.

Doug Howard led the Belfry ground game with 278 yards on 32 carries .  David Jones added 176 yards and a TD on 27 carries and Gary Childers chipped in with 72 yards on 14 carries. 

Zach Barnard led Owensboro Catholic's high-powered passing attack by completing 22 of 35 passes for 383 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.  Heath Wright caught eight passes for 192 yards with a TD.  completed 21 of 37 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns to lead Owensboro Catholic.  Jacob Randolph had six receptions for 80 yards with two scores.  Robbie Boarman chipped in with five receptions for 80 yards.

Class 3A Championship

Highlands (13-1) vs. Boyle County (12-2) December 4, 2004

Highlands has captured 15 football championships and current coach Dale Mueller won four of those titles in his tenure as a coach.  Highlands has averaged 34.2 ppg while their defense has only given up 7.9 points per game.  6-2 210 pound Sr. Michael Mitchell has gained 616 yards and nine touchdowns on 63 carries.  5-10 178 pound Sr. Michael Bonomini added 577 yards and nine touchdowns on 99 carries while 5-7 145 pound So. Jordan Kramer chipped in with 553 yards and six touchdowns on 65 carries.  6-3 193 pound Jr. QB Chase Cecil completed 29 of 58 passes for 595 yards with five TDs and five interceptions.  5-11 176 pound Jr. QB Chase Hudepohl completed 21 of 49 passes for 483 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.  6-2 194 pound Jr. Ben Guidugli is the leading receiver with 16 receptions for 363 yards with six touchdowns.  (Note:  Michael Mitchell was ruled ineligible for this game by the KHSAA.)

Coach Chuck Smith's Boyle County Rebels have won five consecutive state titles.  The Rebels have also won 29 consecutive playoff games.  One of the two losses Boyle County has suffered this season came at the hands of Highlands by a score of 21-0.  The Rebels have passed for 3366 yards and rushed for 2773 yards.  They have averaged 48.5 ppg this season and given up an average of 17.4 ppg.

5-10 180 pound Sr. RB Quinn Givhan has led the ground game with 1361 yards and 23 touchdowns on 207 carries.  6-1 195 pound Sr. QB Brandon Smith added 893 yards and 16 touchdowns on 117 carries.  Smith completed 208 of 331 passes for 3284 yards with 43 touchdowns and six interceptions.  6-1 175 pound Jr. Seth Tamme caught 69 passes for 1347 yards with 14 TDs.  6-2 189 pound Sr. Evan Teague added 45 receptions for 671 yards with 15 touchdowns.  5-8 180 pound Sr. Danny Commaford led the defense with 83 solo and 51 assisted tackles.  5-9 249 pound Sr. DL Jacob Arnold added 68 solo and 32 assisted tackles while Evan Teague chipped in with 59 solo and 39 assisted tackles.

Highlands avenged a 44-10 loss to Boyle County in last year's title game by defeating the Rebels 22-6 to claim their 16th state championship.  Boyle County turned the ball over four times in their first five possessions but still managed a 6-6 halftime tie.  Highlands took control in the second half to score 16 unanswered points.  Highlands' defensive line dominated play and Boyle County could not get on track on offense.

Highlands held a 260-181 yard advantage in total offense and a 153-64 margin in rushing yardage.  Highlands lost one fumble, had a pass intercepted, and was penalized eight times for 66 yards.  Boyle County lost two fumbles, had four passes intercepted, and was flagged 13 times for 111 yards.

James Hubbard led the Highlands ground game with 70 yards and a TD on 19 carries.  Michael Bonomini added 31 yards on six carries.  Chase Cecil completed two of 10 passes for 46 yards with an interception.  James Hubbard completed his only pass for 61 yards.  Nick Sheffield had two receptions for 46 yards while Chris Owens grabbed one pass for 61 yards.

Quinn Givhan led the Boyle County ground game with 44 yards on eight carries.  Brandon Smith completed eight of 26 passes for 117 yards with one TD and four interceptions.  Seth Tamme caught four passes for 72 yards with a TD.

Class 4A Championship

Scott County (12-2) vs. St. Xavier (13-1) December 4, 2004

Coach Jim McKee's Scott County Cardinals have gained 3471 yards on the ground and 1324 yards through the air this season.  The ground game has been led by 5-10 185 pound Sr. Ted Sberna with 1914 yards and 29 touchdowns on 252 carries.  5-9½ 235 pound Sr. Percy Hargrove added 1180 yards and 15 touchdowns on 228 rushing attempts.  6-1 206 pound So. QB Cody Andrews completed 77 of 143 passes for 1242 yards with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions.  5-10 195 pound LB Jason Rusch led the defense with 39 solo and 66 assisted tackles.  6-0 191 pound Jr. LB Cameron Mueller added 28 solo and 72 assisted tackles while 6-0 186 pound Sr. LB Jake Mullins chipped in with 37 solo and 53 assisted tackles.  6-1 170 pound Sr. DB Cody Courtney and 6-4 210 pound Sr. DB William Lewis each intercepted six passes.  Lewis also caught 58 passes for 1016 yards and 11 touchdowns. 

Coach Mike Glaser's St. Xavier Tigers have captured 10 state championships and their coach for the last 23 years, Mike Glaser, has five of those titles.  St. Xavier has averaged 40.1 points per game while the defense has surrendered 11.6 points per game.  The Tigers have gained 3203 yards on the ground and 1244 yards through the air.  5-8 160 pound So. Victor Anderson gained 889 yards with 24 touchdowns on 127 carries while 5-9 179 pound Sr. Justin Brown carried the ball 181 times for 993 yards with 15 touchdowns.  6-0 180 pound Jr. QB Brent Curley completed 65 of 113 passes for 815 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions.  5-9 164 pound Sr. Daniel Winslow led the receivers with 25 receptions for 279 yards.  6-0 199 pound Sr. LB Justin Davis, 6-0 192 pound Sr. DE Andrew Dornbrook, and 5-11 167 pound Sr. DB Phil Blakley led the defense with 67, 62, and 57 solo tackles respectively.  5-11 171 pound Jr. DB Alex Kramer and Phil Blakley recorded six and five interceptions respectively.

St. Xavier rolled up 339 yards on the ground and defeated Scott County 49-9 to claim their 11th football championship.  The Tigers took a 14-0 first quarter lead on 61 and three yard runs by Victor Anderson.  The Cardinals showed life when Ted Sberna returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to the St. Xavier 8 yard line.  The St. Xavier defense held and Scott County missed a field goal attempt from the 26 yard line.  St. Xavier scored three TDs in the second quarter to take a 35-0 halftime lead.  St. Xavier held Scott County to a field goal until the final play of the game when Cody Andrews hit Rodney Haddix with a 17 yard scoring strike to make the score 49-9.

St. Xavier held a 414-267 yard advantage in total offense and enjoyed a 21-15 advantage in first downs.  St. Xavier did not suffer any turnovers and was penalized three times for 33 yards.  Scott County lost a fumble, had two passes intercepted, and was penalized six times for 30 yards.

Victor Anderson led St. Xavier's ground attack with 150 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries.  Justin Brown carried the ball 21 times for 97 yards with three touchdowns.  Brent Curley completed five of eight passes for 68 yards.  Shane Uttich and Jon. Buehner each caught two passes for 39 and 27 yards respectively.

Ted Sberna led the Scott County ground game with 117 yards on 23 carries, added 136 yards on kick return yardage, and recorded 12 tackles on offense.  Percy Hargrove added 44 yards on 12 carries.  Cody Andrews completed six of 15 passes for 72 yards with one TD and two interceptions.  Rodney Haddix caught three passes for 21 yards with one touchdown.
