Paul Dunbar (9-3) vs. Madison Central (11-1) November 21, 2003

Paul Dunbar lost to Madison Central 12-7 early this season and was stopped inches from a TD when time expired.  The stakes are a little higher this time as the winner advances to the state semifinals.  Coach Fred Barnott's Bulldogs feature a large and athletic offensive and defensive line which includes 6-3 201 pound Sr. Daniel Doss, 6-2 300 pound Sr. Austin Asher, 6-4 265 pound Sr. Blake Slates, 6-0 290 pound Sr. Zach Brewer, 5-11 275 pound Jr. Andrew Fogg, 6-2 310 pound Sr. Aaron Hundley, and 6-2 225 pound Jr. Tyler Bailey.  Jr. RB Bobby Vyverberg has led the ground attack with 1559 yards and 15 touchdowns.  QB Davis Stanley has passed for 1127 yards and 12 touchdowns and has run for eight touchdowns.

Coach Kenny Turner's Madison Central Indians feature several playmakers on offense, including QB Ryan Barnes, WR Steven Ballew, and RBs Steven Stunson, Thomas Estill, Paul Warford, and Andrew Mathis.  The defense features speed and is led by LB Matt Bell.  Madison Central has won the last two meetings with Dunbar but was knocked out of the playoffs by the Bulldogs in 2000 and 1997.

Dunbar came back from deficits of 6-0 at halftime and 9-7 in the third quarter to defeat Madison Central by a score of 18-9.  After being shutout in the first half, Dunbar made some offensive line adjustments and ran Bobby Vyverberg behind them and 245 pound fullback Wayne Thurman.  This opened up some holes for Vyverberg, who rushed for over 100 yards and a TD in the second half.  The Bulldogs led 10-9 late in the game when Mike Sweatt intercepted a Madison Central pass and returned it to the Madison Central 43 yard line.  QB Davis Stanley added an insurance TD on a 12 yard run and Vyverberg added the two point conversion to make the score 18-9.

Dunbar held a 268-232 yard advantage in total offense for the evening.  Each team had 11 first downs but neither team was efficient on third down conversions as Dunbar was three of 12 while Madison Central could only convert one of nine opportunities.  Each team lost a fumble and Madison Central had one pass intercepted.  Dunbar was penalized eight times for 124 yards while Madison Central was flagged six times for only 22 yards.

Dunbar ground out 263 yards on the ground, led by Bobby Vyverberg who gained 176 yards and a TD on 30 carries.  QB Davis Stanley added 68 yards and a score on eight carries.  Sean O'Brien punted the ball seven times for a 40.7 yard average.  The Bulldog defense was led by Zach Brewer with nine solo and one assisted tackle.  This included three tackles for losses totaling 14 yards.  Ryan Combs added eight solo and one assisted tackle with three of his tackles for losses totaling 10 yards.  Ryan Combs added

Madison Central was led on the ground by Steven Stunson who gained 48 yards and scored a TD on 16 carries.  Ryan Barnes carried the ball 11 times for 43 yards and completed three of 14 passes for 80 yards.  Steven Ballew had two receptions for 75 yards.  Ryan Barnes led the Madison Central defense with nine solo and two assisted tackles.  Evan King added eight solo and three assisted tackles.
