Paul Dunbar (4-1) vs. Tates Creek (3-1) September 26, 2003

Coach Fred Barnott's Dunbar Bulldogs are living up to their pre-season ranking as one of the district favorites.  QB Davis Stanley has completed 35 of 54 passes for 582 yards and eight scoring strikes.  RB Bobby Vyverberg has gained 579 yards on the ground.  Drew Roberts and Zach Brewer anchor a defense that has shut down opponents in the second half, allowing a total of only three points in the second half all season.

Coach Mark Willoughby's Tates Creek Commodores finished 2-8 last season but have started the season by winning three out of four games.  The offense has been led by Quincy Taylor, who has rushed for 538 yards in four games.  Eric Choat, Zach Jones, and Daniel Covington have led the Commodore defense this season.

Paul Dunbar opened up their first offensive series with a bit of razzle-dazzle that yielded big dividends.  RB Bobby Vyverberg faked a sweep, then pulled up and threw a 74 yard TD pass to Eric Jackson to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead on their way to a 17-7 victory.  The Bulldogs also made a key defensive stand late in the first half.  Tates Creek had a first and goal from Dunbar's seven yard line but only netted two yards on four running plays.

Dunbar led 17-0 before Tates Creek finally scored with 19 seconds remaining on the clock, after recovering a fumble on the Dunbar eight yard line.  Three plays later, Quincy Taylor scored on a two yard run.

Dunbar was led tonight by Bobby Vyverberg, who carried the ball 17 times for 56 yards.  Vyverberg also completed the one pass he attempted for 74 yards and a score.  QB Davis Stanley completed five of seven passes for 74 yards.  Eric Jackson caught two passes for 80 yards and a touchdown.  Ryan Combs led the Bulldogs defense with nine solo and three assisted tackles and scored on a 23 yard interception return.

Tates Creek actually held a 218-200 yard edge on total offense but had minus one yards through the air.  The Commodores were led tonight by Quincy Taylor, who carried the ball 29 times for 148 yards and a touchdown.  Eric Choat led the defense with 10 solo and three assisted tackles.
