Oldham County (7-4) vs. Lexington Catholic (10-1) November 14, 2003

Oldham County coach Mike Jackson has the task of stopping Lexington Catholic's goal of reaching the region finals for the seventh year in a row.  The Colonels major threats on offense have been RB Kevin Bramblett and WR Brandon Gathof

Coach Bob Sphire's potent Lexington Catholic offense has been led this season by So. QB Justin Burke who has completed 150 of 228 passes for 2476 yards and 33 touchdowns.  Jr. Tyler Hinkel leads a deep receiving corps with 43 receptions for 990 yards and 11 touchdowns.  Sr. Phillip Martin leads the ground attack with 535 yards and 12 touchdowns on 78 rushing attempts. 

Oldham County upset Lexington Catholic 28-24 tonight but it proved costly as they lost RB Kevin Bramblett with a severe knee injury during the third quarter.  Oldham County got on the scoreboard early as Brandon Gathof intercepted a pass and returned it 29 yards for a score with 11:16 remaining in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.  Lexington Catholic roared back and tied the score on a 23 yard TD pass from Justin Burke to Tyler Hinkel.  Oldham County took a 14-7 lead on a two yard run by BramblettJarrell Snowden returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to the Oldham County 14 and Lexington Catholic tied the score 14-14 on an eight yard run by Burke.  Oldham County regained the lead 21-14 on a two yard TD pass from Ryan Phillips to Gathof on a fake field goal attempt with 49 seconds remaining in the first quarter.  The second quarter was scoreless and Oldham County led 21-14 at halftime. 

Oldham County increased their lead to 28-14 in the third quarter on an 85 yard pass from Ben Maffert to Gathof.  Lexington Catholic scored on a Phillip Martin eight yard run and a 35 yard field goal by Brian Behr in the final period to pull within 4, 28-24, with 4:47 remaining in the game.  Lexington Catholic got the ball back two more times but could not reach the end zone. 

Oldham County held a 397-320 yard advantage on offense but lost two fumbles.  Lexington Catholic lost a fumble and had an interception returned for a TD.  Kevin Bramblett led Oldham County on the ground with 138 yards and a score on 23 carries before leaving the game with an injury.  Brandon Gathof carried the ball 15 times for 67 yards.  Gathof also caught four passes for 114 yards and two scores.  Ben Maffert completed five of 11 passes for 168 yards and a TD.  D. J. Baker lead the Colonel defense with eight solo and one assisted tackle while Gathof added six solo tackles. 

Lexington Catholic was led by Justin Burke who completed 20 of 33 passes for 180 yards and a TD.  He also carried the ball 12 times for 65 yards and a TD.  Phillip Martin led the ground game with 73 yards and a score on 14 carries.  Tyler Hinkel caught six passes for 52 yards and a score, while Kevin Vogelsang had five receptions for 48 yards.  Kevin Lattner led the Lexington Catholic defense with 12 solo and three assisted tackles.
