Madison Central (1-0) vs. Paul L. Dunbar (1-0) August 29, 2003

This game is the second annual Norman Passmore Classic, played in honor of the late coach who coached old Dunbar High to a 92-16-6 record in 16 years.

Coach Kenny Turner debuted as head coach of the Madison Central Indians last week with a victory over Bryan Station.  Sophomore QB Andrew Mathis led Madison Central with three rushing touchdowns and a 75 yard kickoff return for another score.  Mathis also threw a 15 yard TD pass.

Coach Fred Barnott made his debut as head coach of Paul L. Dunbar last week with a victory over Garrard County.  The Bulldogs have a lot of experience up front and should be led by Zach Brewer and Blake Slates.  RB should be capably manned by Bobby Vyverberg and Markell WebbDavis Stanley threw for a TD and ran for another last week.

Madison Central took advantage of Dunbar miscues to take a 12-0 lead in the first half but had to fight in the final half to escape with a 12-7 victory tonight.  Madison Central got their first break late in the first quarter as they got good field position at the Dunbar 19 yard line following a shanked punt.  The Indians capitalized as Andrew Mathis hit So. Paul Warford with a 30 yard scoring strike.  Matt Bell intercepted a Dunbar pass late in the half and later scored on a one yard run to give Madison Central a 12-0 lead at the half.

Dunbar was credited with only one first down and 17 total yards in the first half and the offense didn't get on track until midway through the final period.  The Bulldogs scored on a Davis Stanley one yard run and extra point by Brian Vasiloff with 2:15 left to cut the deficit to 12-7.  Dunbar's defense held and after the Madison Central punt, Dunbar went back on offense with 1:40 remaining on the clock.  The Bulldogs drove to the Madison Central one yard line but was stopped on a second-and-goal play as the clock expired.

Dunbar outgained Madison Central 263-193 on total offense but came up on the short end of the scoreboard.  Madison Central QB Andrew Mathis completed six of eight passes for 112 yards and a TD pass.  Paul Warford caught three passes for 83 yards and a TD.  Evan King was credited with eight solo and four assisted tackles.  Dunbar was led by Bobby Vyverberg, who carried the ball 17 times for 103 yards.  Davis Stanley completed 10 if 16 passes for 122 yards.  Vyverberg caught five passes for 46 yards while Thurman Clay had four receptions for 61 yards.  Drew Roberts led the Dunbar defense with seven solo and seven assisted tackles.
