Madison Central (2-1) vs. Tates Creek (2-1) September 12, 2002

The Class 4A Madison Central Indians, coached by Paul Rains, finished 4-7 last season but hope to rebound this season.  Madison Central has nine starters returning on each side of the ball and has good depth at the skill positions.  The Indians enter tonight's contest with a 2-1 record but were handily defeated by Henry Clay last week by a 34-7 score.  Coach Rains was not a happy camper so expect the Indians to come out with a little fire tonight.

Coach Mark Willoughby's Class 4A Tates Creek Commodores finished 10-4 last season but must play their first five games away from home until their new stadium is completed in October.  The Commodores have a lot of holes to fill this year but they have some good football players returning as well as a winning tradition.  The offense should be led by TB Tray Hughes who ran for 1232 yards last season.  Tates Creek lost their season opener but have rebounded to win two in a row.

Whatever gospel Coach Paul Rains preached last week on the practice field at Richmond worked to perfection as Madison Central outmuscled Tates Creek in the trenches on their way to a convincing 27-14 victory.  Madison Central dominated the first half but only held a 14-12 lead due to two big plays by the Tates Creek offense.  Matt Bell got the Indians on the board in the first quarter with a five yard TD run and Phillip Herbst tacked on the extra point.  Ryan Stocks hit Tray Hughes on a screen pass and Hughes turned in a brilliant piece of broken field running to take it to the end zone for a 31 yard score.  The extra point was blocked and Tates Creek still trailed by a 7-6 score.  Thomas Estill then scored on an eight yard run and Herbst converted to give Madison Central a 14-6 advantage.  Tates Creek lined up late in the half for a punt and Madison Central's defense showed rush as they crowded the line of scrimmage.  Tray Hughes took a direct snap and raced 58 yards for the score.  The two point conversion failed and Tates Creek went to the locker room trailing by a 14-12 score.

Madison Central came out determined to re-establish momentum in the third quarter and increased the score to 20-12 on a Matt Bell one yard run but the conversion failed.  Steven Stunson returned a punt 38 yards to the Tates Creek 21 in the fourth quarter to set up an insurance one yard TD run by Dustin Bullock to give the Indians a 27-12 lead.  Tates Creek scored the final points of the game on a safety as Madison Central snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt attempt.

Madison Central was led on the ground by Matt Bell with 17 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns.  Thomas Estill added 82 yards on six carries and added a TD.  The real heroes for Madison Central were the interior linemen who opened up a lot of holes for the backs tonight.  They are 6-6 250 pound Jr. Mark Cornett, 6-1 230 pound Sr. Charles Brandenburg, 6-0 190 pound Sr. Daniel Howard, 5-11 235 pound Sr. Derek Tipton, and 6-3 295 pound Sr. James Ferguson.  Madison Central held a 291-210 edge in total offense.  Tates Creek was led tonight by Tray Hughes who carried the ball 30 times for 134 yards and a score.  He also caught a TD pass of 31 yards.  The Indian defense had and excellent game making the big plays when necessary.  Derek Tipton had a key stop on a Tates Creek fourth-and-one early in the fourth quarter when the game was still in doubt.
