Mason County (3-0) vs. Lafayette (3-0) September 13, 2002

Mason County, under the leadership of Coach David Buchanan, has developed into a Class 2A contender.  The Royals have plenty of offensive weapons with QB Dustin Grutza, RB Nathan Myrick, and WR Chris LoftonGrutza has completed 34 of 51 passes for 632 yards and Nathan Myrick has scored nine TDs already this season.  Mason County has averaged 40.7 ppg in theri three wins. 

Lafayette, under second year coach Mike Harmon, is off to a fast start this year.  They have been led by RB Elrazor Sharp, who has rushed for 485 yards and five touchdowns this season.  They have also had good defensive performances from DB DePaul Peyton, defensive linemen John Tudor and Bilal El-Amin, and linebackers Kevin White and Mike Murray

Mason County utilized a balanced offense, rushing for 244 yards and passing for another 196 yards on their way to a 35-28 victory over Lafayette.  Mason County held a 35-14 lead in the fourth quarter before Lafayette got two late TDs by Elrazor Sharp of 67 and one yard runs to pull the Generals back in the game.  Mason County enjoyed a 440-289 advantage in total offense yards.  Lafayette held a 289-244 advantage on the ground but Mason County had a 196-0 advantage through the air as Lafayette only attempted four passes.  Mason County raced out to a 21-0 lead as QB Dustin Grutza had scoring strikes of 51, 8, and 20 yards to Chris Lofton, Jared Litzinger, and Lofton respectively. 

Mason County was led tonight by Dustin Grutza, who completed 12 of 19 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns.  Chris Lofton caught four passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns.  Nathan Myrick carried the ball 21 times for 155 yards and reached the end zone twice.  He also caught four passes for 61 yards.  Brent Slater and Jordan Murray led the defensive effort.  Slater had nine solo tackles and one assisted tackle while Murray had five solo and eight assisted tackles. 

Elrazor Sharp had a monster game for Lafayette as he rushed for 242 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries.  Mike George led the Lafayette defense with seven solo tackles and four assisted tackles.  Bilal El-Amin recorded seven solo and two assisted tackles.  He was credited with four tackles for losses of 23 yards.  He recorded three sacks for the evening.

Woodford County took advantage of six West Jessamine turnovers to claim a close victory.  Eric Sobelewski carried the ball 22 times for 123 yards and three touchdowns.  He also passed for a score and recorded a fumble and an interception on defense.  West Jessamine QB Nate Johnson completed 23 of 38 passes for 456 yards and three touchdowns.  He was also picked off three times.  Montez Graves caught seven passes for 212 yards and two scores.  Ben Spann caught eight passes for 127 yards.
