Lafayette (6-2) vs. Henry Clay (5-4) October 25, 2002

This is the oldest football rivalry in the city and after 56 games the series is even at 27-27-2  Lafayette is 3-1 in the district while Henry Clay enters the game with a 2-3 district slate  Henry Clay must win tonight to keep their playoff hopes alive. 

The Lafayette Generals, coached by Mike Harmon, have been led by 5-9 223 pound RB Elrazor Sharp who has rushed for 1046 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.  The Generals may have to open up their offense more against Henry Clay but have only averaged 46 passing yards a game.  Lafayette has a big play threat in 5-6 156 pound Jr. WR Spencer Fain

Coach Sam Simpson's Henry Clay Blue Devils have a diversified offense led by 6-4 200 pound Sr. QB David Buchanan and RBs 6-1 192 pound Sr. Isaiah Stewart and 5-7 146 pound Sr. Demetric Blackburn.  They also have a big play receiver in 6-2 175 pound Jr. SE Aubrey White, who has caught 46 passes for 737 yards and nine touchdowns.  6-4 200 pound Sr. David Buchanan has thrown for 1187 yards. 

Henry Clay overcame an 8-0 deficit at halftime to defeat Lafayette 29-20 and keep their playoff hopes alive.  Henry Clay lost two fumbles, had two passes intercepted, and was whistled for 80 yards in penalties in the first half, but Lafayette could only put eight points on the board.  The Blue Devils roared back in the second half and scored on a 62 yard run by Demetric Blackburn on the first play from scrimmage.  Blackburn tied the game at 8-8 on a two point conversion run.  Rod Johnson added a 10 yard TD on a pass from David Buchanan and Blackburn scored on a 37 yard run to conclude a 22 point Henry Clay third quarter and give the Blue Devils a 22-14 lead.  The teams swapped TDs in the final period and Henry Clay held on for the win. 

Henry Clay held a 350-266 edge in total offense but was penalized 13 times for 92 yards while Lafayette was whistled five times for 45 yards.  Henry Clay was led tonight by Isaiah Stewart, who carried the ball 21 times for 175 yards and a score.  Demetric Blackburn added 112 yards and 2 TDs on nine carries.  The Henry Clay offensive line had an excellent second half, opening up holes for Stewart and Blackburn on a wet and muddy field.  Lafayette was led by Cecil Jones with 102 yards and a 97 yard scoring run on four carries.  Elrazor Sharp added for 79 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
