Scott County (6-2) vs. Paul Laurence Dunbar (6-1) October 19, 2001

Coach Jim McKee's Scott County Cardinals come into this game reeling and apparently snakebit.  They lost a 35-34 overtime thriller last week to Tates Creek.  Jayce Johnson, a star on both sides of the ball, was suspended for the Tates Creek game.  They also lost corner back Von Fields and running back Chris Travis with injuries.  Tonight they face a team that has beaten them three times in a row.  Hopeless? -- probably not, even though Scott County will be an underdog.  Jayce Johnson is back and Coach McKee will have his Cardinals ready to play.

Dunbar, on the other hand, must regroup from their first loss of the season, a 19-9 loss to Henry Clay.  Corey Dunn has rushed for 1196 yards and 11 touchdowns on 158 carries.  QB Josh Ellis has completed 61 of 110 passes for 1043 yards and 10 TD passes.  Aaron Mason has caught 24 passes for 465 yards and five touchdowns.  Dunbar coach Mark Peach is probably hoping for a dry track tonight after two weeks in the mud and a continued return to form by star RB Corey Dunn who returned last week from a sprained ACL.

Daniel Snodgrass kicked a 26 yard field goal with 9 seconds remaining on the clock to give Scott County a big victory over Dunbar.  Snodgrass gave Scott County a 3-0 lead at halftime on a 30 yard field goal.  Dunbar's Carson Kerr tied the game on a 39 yard field goal in the third period.  Scott County regained the lead as Jayce Johnson took a direct snap and ran 7 yards for the score.  Scott County led 10-3 after three quarters.  Dunbar tied the score at 10-all in the final period on a 17 yard pass from Josh Ellis to Manny ThurmanJayce Johnson scored from 25 yards to give Scott County a 16-10 lead but the PAT failed.  Dunbar tied the game 16-16 on a beautifully threaded 5 yard TD pass to Tim Jenks in the corner of the end zone.  However, the Dunbar PAT was blocked.  There were two key plays on Scott County's winning drive.  A pass interference call kept the drive alive and QB Chris Cronin hit Ryan Rennecker with a 33 yard pass to the Dunbar 18, setting the stage for Snodgrass's winning kick.

Dunbar's Aaron Mason left with an injury in the first half and Scott County was without the services of the aforementioned Von Fields and Chris Travis.  Scott County was led tonight by Jayce Johnson, who rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.  Johnson also had five receptions for 47 yards.  QB Chris Cronin completed 16 of 27 passes for 200 yards.  Dunbar's Josh Ellis completed 15 of 24 passes for 190 yards and two scores.  189 of his passing yards came in the second half.  Corey Dunn rushed for 65 yards on 18 carries and caught six passes for 79 yards.  Tim Jenks had five receptions for 82 yards.
