Bryan Station (0-3) vs. Lafayette (3-1) September 15, 2001
Chris Hunt kicked a 27 yard field goal with four seconds remaining on the clock to give Mike Harmon's Lafayette Generals a 9-7 victory over the Bryan Station Defenders. The game was scoreless at halftime but Bryan Station took a 7-0 lead in the third quarter on an 18 yard touchdown run by Markeith Gillis. Lafayette cracked the scoring column with 9:18 remaining in the final period as Justin Albrecht hit Spencer Fain with a 14 yard scoring pass. The conversion failed and Lafayette still trailed 7-6.
The key play occurred during the last minute of the game with Lafayette facing a fourth-and-fourteen play from their own 47 yard line. Backup QB Brian Dinger hit Jeff Coats with a 35 yard pass to the Bryan Station 18 yard line giving Lafayette a first down and setting the stage for Hunt's last second heroics.
Coach Norm Powell's Bryan Station team was led today by 250 pound running back Markeith Gillis who rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. Elrazor Sharp ran for 91 yards on 24 carries for Lafayette.
This was a tough loss for Bryan Station who has faced a challenging schedule and is now 0-4. One bright spot for the Defenders was a return to health of Markeith Gillis who has nursed a bad ankle most of the season. It was an emotional victory for first year coach Mike Harmon who now has Lafayette at 4-1 for the year.
