Coach Dale Mueller’s Highlands Bluebirds roll into Louisville gunning for their third straight state championship. QB Gino Guidugli triggers the offense by completing 239 of 368 passes for 4055 yards and 48 touchdowns. Eamon Mueller led the ground attack with 1023 yards and 7 TDs on 166 rushing attempts and 21 touchdowns. Brett Hamblen caught 65 passes for 1374 yards and 27 touchdowns. All-state performers 6-4 232 Sr. DL Ben Scott and 6-4 243 Sr. LB Brent Grover led the Highlands defense.
Coach Gordon Powers returns the Owensboro Red Devils to Louisville for a return engagement with Highlands. They lost to Highlands 48-10 in the title game last year. Bo Smith, a 6-0 160 pound Jr. TB, led the Red Devil ground game with 1349 yards and touchdowns on 152 carries. Justin Miller added 1300 yards and 20 touchdowns on 130 rushing attempts. QB Cody Miller completed 32 of 68 passes for 679 yards and 10 touchdown strikes.
Highlands rolled up 493 yards on offense and beat a scrappy Owensboro squad 48-27. Owensboro gave Highlands a good battle but eventually Highlands prevailed for their overall 15th championship. Gino Guidugli completed 21 of 36 passes for 312 yards and three touchdown passes. LB Brent Grover had a great game for the Highlands defense.
