Characters From the Emily Books

Blake, Evelyn- A classmate of Emily's at Shrewsbury High School, she plots against Emily while pretending to like her. Full of pretentious literary ambitions, Evelyn is the niece of Miss Brownell.

Bradshaw, Allan- Young child whose life Emily saves in Emily Climbs when she mysteriously draws the picture of the house in which he is trapped in her sleep.

Miss Brownell- Emily's first schoolteacher in Blair Water. Hateful and patronizing of Emily in particular.

Burnley, Dr. Allan- Ilse's father. After he believed his wife had run off with another man, he turned his back on Ilse and denounced God, but when the truth was revealed, adored Ilse lavishly. Infamous in the village for his temper.

Burnley, Ilse- Emily's best friend. Wild with a temper like her father, she wants to become an actress. Pretends to hate Perry while she really loves him.

Mr. Carpenter- Emily's second schoolteacher. Once considered brilliant, he was thrown out of seminary because of his alcohol problem. He is Emily's main tutor and critic. His nickname for her is Jade.

Father Cassidy-The Catholic priest that Emily consults when Lofty John threatens to cut down the grove north of New Moon, and to ask questions about convents for her new epic poem, The Child of the Sea.

Dutton, Ruth- Emily's aunt, sister to Elizabeth, Laura, and Juliet. Accuses Emily of being sly and deep. A Shrewsbury resident, she lets Emily board with her during her high school years.

Greaves, Mark- A writer whose story, A Royal Betrothal, is serialized in the Charlottetown Argus, for which Emily has to write the missing last chapter. He comes to New Moon to rebuke her, but instead proposes.

Greene, Ellen- Housekeeper for Douglas and Emily Starr at their house in Maywood. Thinking it her duty, she informs Emily of her father's impending death.

Kelly, Jock (Old Kelly)- Travelling peddler who teases Emily about getting married.

Kent, Aileen-Teddy's mysterious mother, she is scarred both literally and figuratively. Jealous of all Teddy loves, she hates Emily, until Emily's Quest, when they both believe he has forsaken Emily.

Kent, Teddy (Frederick)- Has the ability to become a great artist. After much confusion, he is Emily's true love.

McIntyre, Margaret- The Woman Who Spanked the King. An elderly Highland Scot whose story Emily retells and has published in a major magazine in Emily Climbs.

Miller, Perry- The hired hand at New Moon and a close friend of Emily. Rises above his background to become a lawyer. Loves Ilse, although he proposes to Emily multiple times.

Murray, Andrew- Emily's cousin, the son of her Uncle Oliver and Aunt Addie. Four years her senior, the Murrays try to marry Emily to this banker to insure she won't elope like her mother, but Emily refuses.

Murray, Elizabeth- Emily's aunt, matriarch of New Moon. Has a hard time understanding Emily and her love of writing.

Murray, Jimmy- Emily's cousin. He is thought to be simple as a result of being pushed in a well by Elizabeth when they were children. Composes poetry in his mind.

Murray, Laura- Emily's aunt and Elizabeth's sister. Sweet and kindhearted, once an item with Allan Burnley.

Murray, Louise- A second cousin, missionary in Japan for twenty years, who brings to P.E.I. a visiting Japanese prince who falls in love with Emily in Emily's Quest.

Mad Mr. Morrison- an old man whose wife Annie died when he was young; he roams the countryside looking for her. In Emily Climbs, Emily is trapped in the church with him one night and she is rescued by Teddy.

North, Geoff- a classmate of Emily's, she gets in trouble with Aunt Elizabeth when he walks her home from prayer meeting. He, however, has had enough of her because she slapped him when he tried to kiss her.

Potter, Ann Cyrilla and Beulah- Sisters-in-law, they are two cruel gossips who are overheard by Emily when she is hiding in the New Moon broom closet.

Priest, Caroline- Lives at Wyther Grange with Great Aunt Nancy, who ridicules her for her Priest family qualities and ugliness.

Priest, Dean- A former classmate and friend of Douglas Starr. Slightly crippled with one shoulder higher than the other, therefore nicknamed Jarback. Saved Emily's life on the cliffs at Malvern, he loves her intensely and jealously.

Priest, Nancy- Emily's great aunt, resident and owner of Wyther Grange. A Murray by birth who has never let anyone forget it. Extremely eccentric.

Royal, Janet- A native of Shrewsbury who is now an editor of a woman's magazine in New York. Extremely confident in Emily's abilities, she offers her a position with a magazine in New York.

Starr, Douglas- Emily's father, a compassionate, understanding man. His death leaves Emily devastated.

Starr, Juliet Murray-Emily's mother, half-sister of Elizabeth, Laura, and Ruth. Eloped with Douglas Starr, a poor man several years her senior, which her family never forgave her for. Died when Emily was four.

Strang, Jennie- Friend and classmate of Emily, hates her at first, but comes to be her staunchest defender.

Stuart, Rhoda- A childhood classmate of Emily, pretends to be her friend and is loved devotedly by her. Later decieves Emily.

Sullivan, Lofty John- Owner of a plot of land right behind New Moon that he refuses to sell back. Tricks Emily into believing she has been poisoned in Emily of New Moon.
