Introduction
Gor Mahia Football club is one of Kenya and East Africa's most storied football teams and is arguably Kenya's most successful team, having won the national league thirteen times, the local cup 8 times , 5 regional diadems and one continental one. The club is based in Nairobi City but draws huge support from fans all over the country. Indeed Gor Mahia fans are among the most passionate and fanatical.
It was formed in 1968 following the amalgamation of Luo United and Luo Stars football clubs. The club won the Kenya national football league at its first attempt , an achievement which was merely a sign of things to come. The club is named after a famous medicine-man of the 19th century from Kenya's Homa Bay district. Initially the club mainly drew support from natives of the then called South Nyanza district. Among its founding members is , the famous Kenyan freedom fighter and legislator : Tom Mboya . It was set up to rival Luo Union FC which drew support from natives of the then called North Nyanza district as well as Abaluhya Football club.
