"My goodness, Mare, what's the big deal?" I said after she dragged me onto my bus. "Cassie! Did you read the article?" she said, hugging me. "Yeah, Nick showed it to me," I said, laughing. She let me go and looked at the ground. "Nick, huh?" she asked. "Mare, he was just showing me," I said, putting my hand on her shoulder. She looked up at me. "You and Nick are pretty good friends," she said, sitting down on a couch. "Well, I mean, I guess we're cool. I wouldn't exactly say FRIENDS," I stressed. "I mean, I hardly have time to spend with him, or the rest of the guys for that matter," I whispered. "You mean Brian?" she asked, smiling. I smiled and nodded. "What do I care, though! I mean, he doesn't even look up at me when I walk in a room!" I said, sitting down next to her. "Talk to him at sound check tomorrow," she suggested. "Maybe I will. But only if you talk to Nick!" I laughed. "I couldn't! He doesn't even know I exist!" she laughed with me. "Come on. Remember, Dare Devils forever!" I said, referring to a nick name our friends gave us in seventh grade. "Yeah, I guess so. Tomorrow it is!" she said. ____________________________________________________________________________ "Okay, people. We're going to check the band, then get rolling with Cassie," Henry said. My crew, dancers, band and I were sitting in the audience of the arena in Atlanta. The guys, their crew, dancers and band were behind us. My band and the other band got up and made their way onto the stage. Marianne looked at me from across the aisle and nodded. I got up and walked a few rows back. "Hi, Brian," I said. He looked up from his magazine and smiled. "Hey, Cassie," he answered. "Sit down," he offered. I sat in the chair next to him and looked at his magazine. "Whatcha reading?" I asked. "Oh, just Sports Illustrated. It's boring, actually," he said, tossing it into the seat on the other side of him. "Yeah, it's not basketball season!" I said. He smiled. "You like basketball?" he asked. "Well, I played in high school, so I guess I'm partial to it," I answered. "Cool," he said. We sat there for a few akward moments. "So, how are you and Leighanne doing?" I boldly asked, although I already knew the answer. "How do you know her?" he asked, looking at me. "Oh, I heard AJ mention her name a few weeks ago," I lied. "Oh. Well, nothing too damaging, I hope. No, Leighanne and I called it off about a month ago," he said, looking down at his hands. "I'm sorry," I said, placing my hand on his shoulder. He looked back at me and smiled. We continued talking for about twenty more minutes, and I think I finally crossed that barrier with him.
