Ashland Blazer vs. East Carter

East Carter High School
Grayson, KY
October 8, 2021

© 2021 by Ron Harrison

Ashland Blazer made a late defensive play and tacked on an insurance field goal to earn a 31-20 victory on a muddy field in foggy conditions on the road.  Ashland led 7-0 after the first quarter but things got a little wild and crazy in the second quarter.  Ashland took a 14-0 lead with under nine minutes on the clock on a 13 yard pass from Bailey Thacker to Ricky Padron and a conversion kick by SJ Lycans.  East Carter answered with a 31 yard run by Charlie Terry to make the score 14-6 but the attempt for a two point conversion failed (5:42).  Ashland’s Bailey Thacker hooked up with Terrell Jordan on a 64 yard pass play for a touchdown and SJ Lycans kicked the extra point to make the score 21-6 (5:29).  East Carter answered with a 99 yard kickoff return by Connor Goodman and a conversion run by Kanyon Kozee to make the score 21-14 (5:16).  There were three touchdowns scored in 26 seconds in the dizzying sequence that highlighted the quarter.  Ashland stretched the lead to 28-14 after three quarters but East Carter trimmed the deficit to 28-20 with 10 minutes to go in the final quarter.  East Carter threatened but Zane Christian made a big fumble recovery for Ashland to stop the threat.  Ashland mounted their own drive from there and SJ Lycans iced the game with a 37 yard field goal to make the final score 31-20.

Ashland Blazer recorded 10 first downs and 317 yards of total offense.  The Tomcats were penalized five times for 66 yards and lost a fumble.  East Carter recorded 13 first downs and 262 yards of total offense.  The Raiders were penalized twice for seven yards and lost two fumbles.

Vinnie Palladino led Ashland’s ground game with 98 yards on 15 carries.  Brett Mullins carried the ball five times for 41 yards and a touchdown.  Ricky Padron recorded 26 yards on two carries.  Bailey Thacker completed eight of 10 passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns.  Ricky Padron caught five passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns.  Terrell Jordan added two receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Charlie Terry led East Carter’s ground game with 83 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.  Kanyon Kozee carried the ball 16 times for 40 yards.  Kanyon Kozee completed nine of 17 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.  Connor Goodman caught three passes for 80 yards.  Isaac Boggs added three receptions for 32 yards and a touchdown.  Connor Goodman returned a kickoff for 99 yards and a touchdown.
