2020 OHSAA Football Division I Championship

I decided to incorporate some of the excellent football from our friends up North on my website as I lived in Cincinnati at one time and was always impressed with the brand of football played in the Buckeye State.  Tonight’s Division I title clash pits the 9-2 Cincinnati St. Xavier Bombers against the (11-0) Pickerington Central Tigers.  St. Xavier has won three championships in the past and won their first three playoff games averaging 50 points per game on offense but won two nail-biters to reach the championship game.  The nationally ranked Pickerington Central had outscored their rivals by a 441-86 count.

Cincinnati St. Xavier utilized their air attack and played almost a perfect game in all aspects to defeat Pickerington Central by the score of 44-3 with the second half having a running clock and both teams going scoreless after the intermission.  The Bombers raced out to a 30-0 first quarter lead fueled by four touchdown passes from Brogan McCaughey to Jalen Patterson and a rock-ribbed Bomber defense which shut down the Tigers’ offense.  St. Xavier recorded 22 first downs and 354 yards of total offense.  The Bombers were penalized eight times for 40 yards.  Pickerington Central recorded six first downs and 76 yards of total offense.  The Tigers were penalized once for 15 yards and lost a fumble.

Jake Howland led St. Xavier’s ground game with 36 yards on six carries.  Luke Vrsansky carried the ball added 21 yards on six carries.  Brogan McCaughey completed 25 of 39 passes for 291 yards and four touchdowns.  Jalen Patterson caught five passes for 105 yards and four touchdowns.  Terrell McFarlin added seven receptions for 71 yards.  Charles Kellom recorded seven receptions for 61 yards.  Max Klare added two receptions for 43 yards.  Gabe DuBois returned two kickoffs for 44 yards with a long return of 28 yards and returned one punt for 58 yards and a touchdown.  Grant Lyons led the defense with four solo and two assisted tackles with 4.5 of his tackles resulting in losses totaling 18 yards and tackled Garner Wallace in the end zone for a safety.  Matthew Devine and Brennan Bareswit added two solo and three assisted tackles each.  Giovanni Albanese recovered a fumble.
