Yesterday, I officially started my 47th season as a basketball scout by attending the King of the Bluegrass Jaboree at Fairdale High School in Fairdale, KY. Each game consisted of four quarters that lasted eight minutes each, but the scores were erased at the end of each quarter. Below were the top dozen players and all teams were from Kentucky.

Eastern Kentucky University coach Samantha Williams started the following lineup: 5-11 Jr. Bria Bass, 5-8 Sr. Shay Solomon, 6-2 Jr. I’Liyah Green, 5-6 Jr. Teri Goodlett, and 5-7 Jr. D’Ayra Davis.  Mercer coach Susie Gardner countered with 5-11 Jr. Shannon Titus, 5-9 Fr. Jill Harris, 6-0 So. Jaron Dougherty, 5-6 So. Amoria Neal-Tysor, and 5-6 Fr. Jordan McLaughlin.

 

Bria Bass hit the winning three point basket with 46 seconds left in overtime to give Eastern Kentucky a 61-60 victory over Mercer.  Mercer led Eastern Kentucky 49-47 late in the game but Teri Goodlett hit a basket in the paint with 11 seconds to go in regulation to tie the score and force overtime.  The score was tied six times and there were eight lead changes in the game.

 

Eastern Kentucky shot 36.7% from the field including eight of 21 from the three point line.  The Colonels connected on nine of 21 free throws, pulled down 44 rebounds, and scored eight points off 18 Mercer turnovers.  Mercer shot 27% from the field including two of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Bears connected on 18 of 25 free throws, pulled down 47 rebounds, and scored 24 points off 24 Eastern Kentucky turnovers.

 

6-1 Jr. Samari Mowbray led Eastern Kentucky with 19 points including four three point baskets and six rebounds.  Bria Bass added 12 points including two three point baskets and 12 rebounds.  I’Liyah Green recorded 10 points and 12 rebounds.

 

Jaron Dougherty led Mercer with 15 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.  Jordan McLaughlin added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and four steals.  Shannon Titus recorded 13 points, 14 rebounds, and seven steals.  Jill Harris chipped in with eight points, nine rebounds, and five assists.

Eastern Kentucky University coach AW Hamilton started the following lineup: 6-8 S. Tre King, 6-3 Sr. Ty Taylor, 6-8 Jr. Darius Hicks, 6-0 Jr. Russhard Cruickshank, and 6-2 So. Jomaru Brown.  Cleveland State University coach Dennis Gates countered with 6-4 Sr. Tre Gomillion, 6-3 Jr. Franklyn Penn, 6-8 Jr. Algevon Eichelberger, 6-0 Sr. Kasheem Thomas, and 6-0 Fr. Jeremy Sanchez.

 

Eastern Kentucky University led 26-18 late in the first half but Cleveland State finished the half on a 12-3 run to take a 30-29 halftime lead.  The Vikings pulled away in the second half to earn a 65-51 victory over Eastern Kentucky.  Cleveland State dominated inside with a 32-12 advantage on points in the paint.  Cleveland State shot 39.6% from the field including three of 15 from the three point line.  The Vikings connected on 24 of 31 free throws, pulled down 49 rebounds, scored 15 points off 14 EKU turnovers and held a 29-8 advantage on bench points.

 

Eastern Kentucky shot 25.5% from the field including three of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Colonels connected on 22 of 31 free throws, pulled down 31 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 21 Cleveland State turnovers.

 

Tre Gomillion led Cleveland State with 15 points including 11 of 12 free throws and 16 rebounds.  6-3 Jr. Craig Beaudion added 14 points including seven of eight free throws and five rebounds.  Algevon Eichelberger recorded nine points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots.  6-9 So Deante Johnson chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds.  6-1 Fr. Hugo Ferreira added seven points.

 

Jomaru Brown led Eastern Kentucky with 15 points including nine of 13 free throws and four steals.  Ty Taylor added 11 points.  Darius Hicks recorded six points and 15 rebounds.

Paintsville Tailback John Walker Phelps battled illness and a wet field to roll up 206 yards and two touchdowns to lead Paintsville to a 36-34 victory over Williamsburg.  The win did not come easy as Williamsburg mounted a late drive and marched to the Paintsville seven yard line where they had first-and-goal.  They managed to get to the three yard line but two incomplete passes gave the ball back to Paintsville Tigers with 5:21 remaining in the game.  The Tigers were able to run out the clock with their ground-and-pound offense led by QB Jake Hyden and Phelps.  Paintsville recorded 19 first downs and 336 yards of total offense; 324 yards coming on the ground.  The Tigers were penalized 12 times for 119 yards and had a pass intercepted.  Williamsburg recorded 16 first downs and 277 yards of total offense.  The Yellow Jackets were penalized 14 times for 118 yards, lost two fumbles, and had a pass intercepted.

John Phelps led Paintsville’s ground game with 206 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries.  Jake Hyden carried the ball 19 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns.  Jake Hyden completed one of seven passes for 12 yards with one interception.  Karsten Poe caught one pass for 12 yards.  Nick Keeton recovered two fumbles including one in the end zone for a touchdown.

Dalton Ponder led Williamsburg’s ground game with 33 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.  Anthony Snell carried the ball five times for 19 yards.  Dalton Ponder completed 17 of 34 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.  Caleb Rose caught seven passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns.  Gavon Thomas added four receptions for 50 yards and one touchdown.  Dakota Lipsteuer caught three passes for 42 yards.  Devonte Powell chipped in with two receptions for 23 yards.  Gavon Thomas also electrified the Yellow Jacket fans with a dazzling 80 yard broken field run on a kickoff return for a touchdown.

Demarcus Avery moved to quarterback after Jayden Scroggin suffered an injury and sparked DeSales to a 41-7 victory over Bardstown tonight.  Bardstown took a 7-0 first quarter lead but DeSales led 21-7 at halftime and were never threatened in the second half.  DeSales recorded 14 first downs and 352 yards of total offense.  The Colts were penalized four times for 37 yards and lost a fumble.  Bardstown recorded six first downs and 119 yards of total offense.  The Tigers were penalized seven times for 83 yards.

James Johnson led DeSales’ ground game with 138 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.  Demarcus Avery added 92 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.  Demarcus Avery completed three of four passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns.  Jayden Scroggin completed two of three passes for 23 yards.  Demetri Scott caught two passes for 24 yards and a touchdown.  Antione Johnson added one reception for 56 yards and a touchdown.  Lance Weiter returned one kickoff for 28 yards.  Antione Johnson returned one kickoff for 25 yards.  Derek Hollenkamp led the defense with six solo and four assisted tackles.  Lance Weiter also recorded six solo and four assisted tackles.  DeJuan Watkins added five solo and two assisted tackles with three defensive sacks.  Darren Hollenkamp chipped in with for solo and two assisted tackles.

DaTrail Wright led the Bardstown ground game with 13 yards on four carries.  LaDarion Montgo added eight yards on nine carries.  Brady Clark completed 17 of 29 passes for 133 yards and one touchdown.  Tereylin Calbert caught six passes for 43 yards.  Jase Phillips added 35 yards on five receptions.  LaDarion Montgo caught four passes for 42 yards.  Gray Clark added a four yard touchdown reception.  JaRel Montgomery returned one kickoff for 24 yards.

Eastern Kentucky University used a record-setting performance by kicker Sam Hayworth to defeat Jacksonville State University by a score of 29-23 to finish the season at 7-5.  Hayworth kicked five field goals and two extra points to give him 17 points for the game which set a program record for points by a kicker in the game and his five field goals tied another EKU record.  Jacksonville State had one last opportunity but the game ended on a quarterback back by Aaron Patrick which moved him into second place among all sack leaders at EKU.  Eastern Kentucky University recorded 26 first downs and 396 yards of total offense.  The Colonels were penalized five times for 40 yards.  Jacksonville recorded 22 first downs and 391 yards of total offense.  The Gamecocks were penalized seven times for 48 yards and lost one fumble.

Daryl McCleskey led Eastern Kentucky’s ground game with 110 yards on 24 carries.  Alonzo Booth carried the ball 16 times for 54 yards and a touchdown.  Conor Blount recorded 31 yards on five carries.  Conor Blount completed 18 of 35 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown.  Dakota Allen completed his only pass for 21 yards.  Jerome Gross caught six passes for 63 yards.  Matt Wilcox Jr. added four receptions for 18 yards.  BK Smith recorded three receptions for 38 yards.  Daryl McCleskey chipped in with two catches for 27 yards.  Keyion Dixon added one reception for 18 yards and Jackson Beerman caught a 17 yard touchdown pass.  Quentin Pringle returned three kickoffs for 68 yards including a long return of 32 yards.  Sam Hayworth connected on field goals of 34, 24, 25, 50, and 28 yards, missed on a 48 yard attempt and connected on two conversion kicks.  Hayworth also kicked off seven times for a 56.1 average and three touchbacks.  Corey Glass led the defense with seven solo and two assisted tackles.  Allante Leapheart added four solo and five assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a two yard loss.  Ben Bascom recorded six solo tackles and Brentton Ervin chipped in with four solo and one assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a three yard loss.  Taquan Evans added two solo and two assisted tackles with 2.5 of his tackles resulting in losses totaling 11 yards.  Aaron Patrick recorded three solo tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling six yards.  Steven Crowder recovered a fumble. 

Zerrick Cooper led Jacksonville State’s ground game with 44 yards on 17 carries.  Michael Matthews carried the ball eight times for 33 yards.  Zerrick Cooper completed 21 of 35 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns.  Jamari Hester caught nine passes for 186 yards.  KJ Stepherson added seven receptions for 80 yards and three touchdowns.  Josh Pearson added two receptions for 28 yards.  Zack Woodard led the defense with five solo and six assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a one yard loss.  Jalen Choice added two solo and nine assisted tackles.  Charles Crawford and Yul Gowdy each recorded four solo and two assisted tackles.  Traco Williams added three solo and one assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in an eight yard loss.

Tates Creek defeated Simon Kenton by a score of 47-8.  Simon Kenton was hampered by the injury to their starting quarterback who was not able to play tonight and was torched by Tates Creek QB Luke Duby who threw for five touchdowns.  The opportunistic Tates Creek defense intercepted six passes and recorded three quarterback sacks.  Tates Creek recorded 19 first downs and 410 yards of total offense.  The Commodores were penalized six times for 38 yards, lost a fumble, and had one pass intercepted.  Simon Kenton recorded 16 first downs and 268 yards of total offense.  The Pioneers were penalized three times for 19 yards and had six passes intercepted.

Luke Duby led Tates Creek’s ground game with 48 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.  Luke Duby completed 21 of 37 passes for 333 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.  Elliot Bryant caught six passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns.  Miles Thomas added four receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown.  Matthew Underwood recorded three receptions for 26 yards and a touchdown.  Cion Townsend chipped in with three receptions for 23 yards.  Marcus Bosley led the defense with seven solo and one assisted tackles with three of his tackles resulting in losses totaling 18 yards.  JT Acosta added six solo and three assisted tackles with three of his tackles resulting in losses totaling nine yards and intercepted two passes with a total return yardage of 31 yards.  Isaiah McFarland recorded six solo and two assisted tackles.  Elliot Bryant chipped in with six solo and one assisted tackles.and intercepted a pass he returned nine yards.  Delarisco Jones added five solo and one assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling 12 yards.  Cion Townsend added two solo tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a 13 yard loss and intercepted a pass he returned 35 yards.  Ke’Shon Douthitt inetercepted a pass he returned 32 yards and Kobe Middleton also intercepted a pass.

Marcus Courtney led Simon Kenton’s ground game with 75 yards on 20 carries.  Marcus Courtney completed 14 of 44 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown with five interceptions.  Caleb Livers caught four passes for 85 yards and a touchdown.  Trey Little added four receptions for 42 yards.  Evan Mulberry caught three passes for 40 yards.  Zeb Sand punted twice for a 49 yard average with a long punt of 59 yards and one punt inside the 20 yard line.  Isaac Bleier returned four kickoffs for 114 yards with a long return of 40 yards.  Zack Koenes led the defense with three solo and three assisted tackles.  Tyler Musick, Aric Hoffman, Elijah Weaver, and Isaac Bleier each recorded three solo and one assisted tackles.

Louisville Holy Cross won their first regional football championship since 1987 with a 21-16 victory over Newport Central Catholic.  Holy Cross recorded 18 first downs and 266 yards of total offense.  The Cougars were penalized six times for 50 yards and had one pass intercepted.  Newport Central Catholic recorded 18 first downs and 361 yards of total offense.  The Thoroughbreds were penalized six times for 45 yards.

Chaz Geraghty led Holy Cross’ ground game with 105 yards on 17 carries.  Luke Davis carried the ball 18 times for 48 yards and two touchdowns.  Lex Thomas added 31 yards on three carries.  Chaz Geraghty completed six of 14 passes for 78 yards and one touchdown with one interception.  Graham Carnes caught four passes for 62 yards.  Mason Hirst added two receptions for 16 yards and a touchdown.  Lex Thomas returned two kickoffs for 46 yards.  Phillip Matthews, Luke Davis, and JR Perry each recorded five solo and one assisted tackles.  Graham Carnes intercepted one pass.

Jamir Ackerson led Newport Central Catholic’s ground game with 98 yards on 10 carries.  Paul Kremer carried the ball five times for 24 yards.  Paul Kremer completed 19 of 37 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns.  Isacc Freppon caught four passes for 91 yards.  Cody Mueller added five receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown.  Tanner Daunt also caught five passes for 46 yards.  Joey Runyon added three receptions for 10 yards and a touchdown.  Joey Doeker returned two kickoffs for 36 yards.  Luke Landrum led the defense with five solo and five assisted tackles.  Daniel Craig added five solo and four assisted tackles.  Joey Runyon recorded four solo and four assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses.  Quentin Meyer intercepted a pass.

The “Panther Express’ continues to roll as Pikeville improves to 12-0 with a 54-14 victory over Nicholas County who finishes their season at 9-3.  Pikeville recorded 16 first downs and 430 yards of total offense in only 28 plays.  The Panthers were penalized twice for 10 yards and had one pass intercepted.  Nicholas County recorded 12 first downs and 251 yards of total offense.  The Bluejackets were penalized four times for 45 yards, lost a fumble, and had one pass intercepted.

Cody Raines led Pikeville’s ground game with 124 yards and three touchdowns on five carries.  Carson Wright carried the ball four times for 79 yards and two touchdowns.  Clay Tinsley added 26 yards on two carries and Jackson Hensley chipped in with 20 yards on two carries.  Isaac McNamee completed nine of 13 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.  Seth Pugh caught one pass for 66 yards and a touchdown.  Zac Lockhart added four receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown.  Clay Tinsley recorded two receptions for 39 yards.  Jackson Hensley also caught two passes for 38 yards.  Jackson Hensley returned two punts for 59 yards.  Peyton Blair intercepted a pass.

Cain Saucedo led Nicholas County’s ground game with 165 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries.  Michael Tibbs carried the ball 11 times for 50 yards and a touchdown.  Tyler Horn added 19 yards on three carries.  Tyler Horn completed three of 10 passes for 12 yards with one interception.  Matthew Baxter caught one pass for 12 yards.  Cain Saucedo returned five kickoffs for 93 yards.  Reid Allison intercepted one pass.  Tyler Horn punted five times for a 41.2 average.
