Bryan Station earned their first victory of the season with a 27-26 come-from-behind victory over Paul Laurence Dunbar.  Bryan Station recorded 12 first downs and 230 yards of total offense.  The Defenders were penalized six times for 55 yards, lost a fumble, and had a pass intercepted.  Paul Laurence Dunbar recorded 20 first downs and 302 yards of total offense.  The Bulldogs were penalized five times for 104 yards and lost a fumble.

Jalen Burbage led Bryan Station’s ground game with 114 yards with three touchdowns on 15 carries.  Amodeus Taylor carried the ball 15 times for 70 yards.  Antoine Smith added 41 yards on eight carries.  Jalen Burbage completed one of three passes for five yards with one interception.  Kendrick Curry caught one pass for five yards.  Kendrick Curry returned a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown.  Brandon Fields led the defense with three solo and 10 assisted tackles.  Bryson Fields added four solo and five assisted tackles.  Kyran Campbell recorded three solo and four assisted tackles.  Dennis Abw added three solo and three assisted tackles and recovered a fumble.

Mitchell Joseph led Paul Laurence Dunbar’s ground game with 189 yards and two touchdowns on 42 carries.  Alex Bard carried the ball 13 times for 62 yards.  Nate Thomas added eight yards and a touchdown on two carries.  Tanner Cox completed three of five passes for 43 yards and a touchdown.  J. Robinson caught two passes for 37 yards and a touchdown.  Gettler-James led the defense with six solo and four assisted tackles.  Howard Jackson added six solo and two assisted tackles.  Isaac Armstrong recorded four solo and one assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling three yards.  Xzavian Jones recovered a fumble and Tyler Johnson intercepted a pass.

Lexington Catholic utilized their air attack (256 yards and four touchdowns) to defeat Garrard County by a score of 39-22.  Lexington Catholic recorded 12 first downs and 332 yards of total offense.  The Knights were penalized nine times for 100 yards and lost a fumble.  Lexington Catholic averaged 9.2 yards on 36 offensive plays while Garrard County averaged 3.7 yards on 67 offensive plays.  Garrard County recorded 18 first downs and 246 yards of total offense.  The Golden Lions were penalized five times for 36 yards and lost a fumble.

Beau Allen led Lexington Catholic’s ground game with 42 yards on four carries.  Keith Brinkman carried the ball nine times for 27 yards and a touchdown.  Beau Allen completed 12 of 20 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns.  Tommy Knopp caught three passes for 39 yards.  Jackson Corbett added two receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown.  Nathan Schnurr recorded two receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown.  Luke Powell and Dylan Bracken added touchdown receptions of 56 and 55 yards.  Nathan Schnurr returned one punt for 27 yards.  Trenton Neuer returned two kickoffs for 28 yards with a long return of 29 yards.  Dylan Bracken returned one kickoff for 38 yards.  Clay Callahan led the defense with eight solo and eight assisted tackles.  Brennan Emnett added seven solo and seven assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a three yard loss and recovered a fumble.  Henry Holthaus recorded nine solo and one assisted tackles.  C. Coulter added six solo and two assisted tackles with 1.5 of his tackles resulting in losses totaling four yards.

Willie Rader led Garrard County’s ground game with 102 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.  D. Pennington carried the ball 21 times for 42 yards.  Jacob Hacker added 32 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.  Brice Burkhart recorded 16 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.  Brice Burkhart completed three of six passes for 54 yards.  Trace Poynter caught three passes for 54 yards.  Willie Rader returned four kickoffs for 69 yards with a long return of 22 yards.  Cortez Ison led the defense with five solo tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a four yard loss.  Trayce Poynter added four solo tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a three yard loss.  Jacoby Tuggle recorded three solo and two assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling seven yards.  Brice Burkhart added three solo tackles and recovered a fumble he returned for 50 yards.

Covington Catholic led 47-0 at halftime on their way to a 50-8 victory over Dixie Heights.  Covington Catholic recorded 17 first downs and 390 yards of total offense.  The Colonels were penalized five times for 56 yards.  Dixie Heights recorded 14 first downs and 224 yards of total offense.  They were penalized eight times for 75 yards, lost a fumble, and had two passes intercepted.

C. McGinness led Covington Catholic led Covington Catholic’s ground game with 119 yards and four touchdowns on nine carries.  L. Summe carried the ball three times for 61 yards and a touchdown.  C. Jacob completed six of nine passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns.  Z. Coburn caught three passes for 60 yards.  M. Mayer and J. Coldiron caught touchdown passes for 89 and 16 yards respectively.  C. McGinness returned two punts for 46 yards with a long return of 26 yards.  T. Gronette was five of five on extra points, kicked a 27 yard field goal, kicked off eight times for a 53.8 average with four touch backs.  J. Coldiron led the defense with four solo and one assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling six yards.  M. Mayer added four solo tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling four yards and recovered a fumble.  G. Hemmer recorded three solo and one assisted tackles with three of his tackles resulting in losses totaling three yards.  R. Williams caught seven passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.  D. Sears returned two kickoffs for 41 yards with a long return of 28 yards.  C. Williams added two kickoff returns for 38 yards with a long return of 19 yards.  A. Barker led the defense with five solo tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a seven yard loss.  CJ Bensman added four solo tackles.  S. Young and E. Jerauld each recorded three solo tackles.

There were fourteen teams entered in this tournament and placed into four pools as follows:  Pool A; Casey County, Meece, Anderson County, and Northern Pulaski.  Pool B: Rockcastle County, Morton, Southern Pulaski, and Knox County.  Pool C: B. Caudill, Bourbon County, and Lincoln County.  Pool F: Adair County, Whitley County, and Elkhorn.  Each team will play in two pool games and then enter the tournament.  Losers of the first round will then be entered in the Gold Bracket while the victors will advance in the Championship Tournament Bracket.

Lincoln County 42 Anderson County 31 (Quarterfinal) – Talynne Shearer led Lincoln County with 20 points including three three point baskets.  Brylee Briscoe, Jenna Satterly, and Lainey Johnson led Anderson County with eight, five, and five points respectively.

 

Whitley County 34 B. Caudill 24 (Semifinal) – Marissa Douglas and Darcie Anderson led Whitley County with 11 and 10 points respectively.  Gracie Jo Wilder and Emily Worley added six points each.

 

Lincoln County 25 Southern Pulaski 24 (Semifinal) – Makayla Greer hit a free throw in the closing seconds to give Lincoln County the victory.  Talynne Shearer and Makayla Greer led the victors with nine and five points respectively.  Kinsey Molden led Southern Pulaski with 11 points.  Molden, who is polished skill wise beyond her years missed several minutes due to an injury but was able to come back in the game.

 

Whitley County 32 Lincoln County 24 (Championship) – Whitley County outscored Lincoln County 13-2 in the final quarter to earn the come-from-behind victory.  Marissa Douglas led the victors with 12 points.  Darcie Anderson who was name the Most Outstanding Player in the tournament controlled the tempo and added 10 points.  Talynne Shearer and Makayla Greer led Lincoln County with 14 and five points respectively.

Whitley County is coached by Randy Love and his two assistants Heather Housley and Brandon Anderson.  Members of the team are Kylee Brown, Megan Gibbs, Jaelyn Bracket, Katlynn Collier, Emily Worley, Darcie Anderson, Emily Gaylor, Amber Brown, Marissa Douglas, Jalicia Brummett, Gracie Jo Wilder, Makayla Frazier, and Kloey Gibson.

 

This team is a well coached, cohesive unit with their share of star power.  However it is a complete team that utilizes a lot of players.  Darcie Anderson is a cool quarterback who directs traffic but can score when needed and is an excellent passer.  Marissa Douglas is a big time scorer who is not afraid to take the big shot.  Gracie Jo Wilder is another player who can get it done under pressure. Although the team finished 6-0 in the tournament they faced some formidable competition.

 

There were several excellent players in this event that will be heard on in the near future and will well represent the class of 2024.  Darcie Anderson and Marissa Douglas have already been mentioned and Kinsey Molden (Southern Pulaski) is another future star.  Molden is a very savvy, polished player and is an excellent scorer from the perimeter and off the dribble.  Talynne Shearer is an excellent scorer with good size and gets to the rim at will.  Many other players impressed in this tournament.

 

A special thanks to Tom Bower and his fine staff at the Kentucky Basketball Commission for the hospitality extended me this last week end.  The scores and all tournament teams were provided by the KBC staff and the scores came from the official score sheets.  Please forgive any misspelling of names or any errors in the player’s numbers as I was hurriedly collecting the info from the stat sheets after the games.  This report is merely an indicator of the event and not intended to be official.

Eastern Kentucky University defeated UT Martin 35-34 in a wild come-from-behind victory on the road.  EKU led 21-7 after the first quarter but UT Martin stormed back to take a 31-21 halftime lead and increased their advantage to 34-21 in the third quarter but EKU scored to cut the margin to six; 34-28 with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter.  EKU kicked off but Matthew Jackson hustled downfield and recovered the kickoff on the UT Martin 23 yard line.  Daryl McCleskey scored on a 12 yard run and Sam Hayworth converted the extra point kick to give the Colonels a 35-34 lead with 13:01 remaining in the game and the Colonels held on for the victory.  EKU recorded 19 first downs and 284 yards of total offense.  The Colonels were penalized four times for 30 yards, lost a fumble, and had two passes intercepted.  UT Marin recorded 16 first downs and 305 yards of total offense.  The Skyhawks were penalized four times for 25 yards, lost two fumbles, and had two passes intercepted.

LJ Scott led EKU’s ground game with 106 yards on 25 carries.  Daryl McCleskey carried the ball 21 times for 74 yards and two touchdowns.  Alphonso Howard completed nine of 19 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.  Neiko Creamer caught three passes for 69 yards.  Alex Cabrera caught two passes for 20 yards and a touchdown.  Jaelin Carter returned one kickoff for 19 yards.  Gavin Bryant led the defense with four solo and seven assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a two yard loss and scored on a 43 yard fumble recovery return.  Aaron Patrick added three solo and four assisted tackles.  Steven Crowder recorded one solo and six assisted tackles with 1.5 of his tackles resulting in losses totaling three yards.  Cornelius Floyd added four solo and two assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a two yard loss, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass.  Connor Foos recorded one solo and three assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a seven yard loss.  Leodis Moore III also intercepted a pass.

LaDar Galloway led UT Martin’s ground game with 63 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.  Jaimiee Bowe carried the ball nine times for 36 yards.  Dresser Winn completed 17 of 27 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.  Terry Williams caught seven passes for 80 yards.  Devonte Howard added three receptions for 17 yards and a touchdown.  Rodne Williams caught two passes for 38 yards.  Chris Philpott added a 46 yard touchdown reception.  Terry Williams returned three punts for 50 yards with a long return of 44 yards.  Peyton Logan returned three kickoffs for 62 yards with a long return of 26 yards.  DaVonte Maura led the defense with six solo and three assisted tackles.  Porte Streator added four solo and five assisted tackles.  Sherro Pittman recorded two solo and seven assisted tackles.  TJ Jefferson chipped in with one solo and eight assisted tackles.  Anthony Bryant added two solo and five assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a 22 yard loss.  Brand Anderson had one solo and five assisted tackles and intercepted a pass he returned 78 yards.  Horton-Martinda added two solo and three assisted tackles and intercepted a pass he returned 21 yards.  Loren Young recovered a fumble.

DeSales defeated Washington County tonight by a score of 23-12.  DeSales recorded 21 first downs and 346 yards of total offense.  The Colts were penalized seven times for 58 yards, lost a fumble, and had two passes intercepted.  Washington County recorded 10 first downs and 261 yards of total offense.  They were penalized three times for 15 yards and had one pass intercepted.

Aaron Pfaadt led the DeSales ground game with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.  Savion Stivers carried the ball three times for 28 yards.  Aaron Pfaadt completed 11 of 26 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.  Demetri Scott caught seven passes for 109 yards and one touchdown.  Darren Hollenkamp returned one punt for 54 yards.  Savion Stivers returned two punts for 24 yards with a long return of 15 yards and returned two kickoffs for 43 yards with a long return of 24 yards.  Zane Wilkerson led the defense with two solo and five assisted tackles.  Darren Hollenkamp added three solo and two assisted tackles.  Shawn Kaufman intercepted a pass.

Josh Wheaton led Montgomery County’s ground game with 122 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.  Justin Korossy carried the ball 16 times for 39 yards and two touchdowns.  Trey Ishmael completed two of nine passes for 63 yards and a touchdown.  Justin Korossy completed one of two passes for 10 yards.  Pharoah Davis caught a 63 yard touchdown pass.  Justin Korossy returned three kickoffs for 45 yards with a long return of 20 yards.  Ty Eads led the defense with six solo and four assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a one yard loss, and recovered two fumbles with return yardage of 15 yards.  Ty Eads scored a touchdown on one of his recovered fumble.  Jay Eads added six solo and three assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a one yard loss.  Andrew Rutledge recorded six solo and two assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a two yard loss.  Tyler Hamm added four solo and four assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a six yard loss.  Ryan Owens intercepted a pass and Jordan Diaz recovered a fumble.

Covington Catholic held on win their 23^rd straight game 21-14 over Highlands.  Nothing came easy for the Colonels as the game was played on a cold, rainy night.  Turnovers proved to be fatal for Highlands as Covington Catholic scored two of their touchdowns on short drives set up by Highlands’ turnovers.  Highlands also dropped a potential touchdown pass and then was stopped on a fourth and seven running play at the Covington Catholic 33 with less than a minute on the clock.  Highland won several of the statistical battles (first downs and total yardage) and managed to shut down the Colonels potent air attack.

Covington Catholic recorded 10 first downs and 281 yards of total offense.  The Colonels were penalized seven times for 58 yards and lost a fumble.  Highlands recorded 18 first downs and 297 yards of total offense.  The Bluebirds were penalized three times for 18 yards, lost a fumble, and had two passes intercepted.

C. McGinness led Covington Catholic’s ground game with 203 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.  C. Jacob completed four of 10 passes for 45 yards.  Z. Coburn caught two passes for 12 yards.  M. Mayer added one reception for 28 yards.  M. Mayer led the defense with seven solo and three assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling 13 yards.  Jack Coldiron added six solo and two assisted tackles with three of his tackles resulting in losses totaling four yards and intercepted a pass.  R. Halverstadt and L.Summe each recorded five solo tackles.  D. Summe recorded four solo and one assisted tackles and intercepted a pass he returned 23 yards.  J. Hemmer recovered a fumble.

J. Buten led the Highlands ground game with 133 yards on 17 carries.  C. Schwalbach carried the ball 15 times for 42 yards and a touchdown.  G. Cramer completed 14 of 29 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions.  N. Roberts caught four passes for 33 yards.  A. King added three receptions for 20 yards.  H. Ahlfeld added two receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown.  A. Weyer caught two passes for 24 yards.  G. Cramer punted three times for a 52.0 average with a long punt of 54 yards.  B. Huddleston returned two kickoffs for 33 yards with a long return of 22 yards.  J. Brass led the defense with seven solo tackles.  S. Butt added five solo tackles.  B. Huddleston, A. Starkey, and B. Sisson each recorded four solo tackles with three of Sisson’s tackles resulting in losses totaling 11 yards.  C. Zell recovered a fumble.
