Garrard County vs. Lexington Catholic

Lexington Catholic High School
Lexington, KY
October 23, 2015

© 2015 by Ron Harrison

Lexington Catholic defeated Garrard County by a score of 28-16 but the final score did not completely tell the story of this hard fought contest.  Lexington Catholic came out of the gate fast and led 21-0 with 3:01 left in the first quarter.  LexCath QB Kirk Fagot opened up the scoring with a 45 yard scoring strike to a wide open Chris Thompson and Donavan Morris added the conversion kick to make the score 7-0 with 11:13 in the first quarter.  Fagot then threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Donovan Morris and Morris added the kick to make the score 14-0.  Lexington Catholic then scored off a double reverse and a 33 yard touchdown pass from Andy Thompson to Jaylen Jones and another Morris kick to make the score 21-0.  Garrard County then went to a wishbone attack that was destined to pay huge dividends.

Garrard County got on the board with a three yard run by Jacob Foley and a two yard conversion run by Slade Crutchfield to make the score 21-8 with 9:01 left in the half.  Garrard County had another opportunity and took the ball to the Lexington Catholic two yard line but a Jacob Foley fumble was recovered at the one yard line by Sid Sharp to end the drive.  Garrard County continued their comeback in the final quarter as Garrard County crossed up Lexington Catholic with their only pass of the night a 51 yard touchdown strike from Slade Crutchfield to Mike Redmon and a two point conversion run by Devan Logan.  Garrard County had one more big opportunity as Elwood East recovered a Jaylen Jones fumble at the Garrard County 45 yard line with 7:08 left in the game.  However Lexington Catholic’s Zach Minion recovered a Jacob Foley on the Garrard County 48 on the next offensive play.  Lexington Catholic then marched down the field and scored the insurance touchdown on a one yard run by Jaylen Jones and a kick by Donovan Morris to make the score 28-16 with 5:37 left in the game.

Lexington Catholic’s skill and quickness at the skill positions was impressive as well as their swarm to the ball defense.  5-7 185 pound Jr. Jacob Foley led Garrard County’s ground game with his punishing North-South style of running and 6-3 292 pound Jr. DL Colton Barker delivered some punishing stops on defense.

Lexington Catholic recorded 15 first downs and 277 yards of total offense.  The Knights were penalized five times for 47 yards, lost a fumble, and had a pass intercepted.  Garrard County recorded 14 first downs and 273 yards of total offense.  The Golden Lions were penalized six times for 65 yards and lost two fumbles.

Jaylen Jones led Lexington Catholic’s ground game with 54 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.  Andy Thompson carried the ball nine times for 52 yards.  Kirk Fagot completed nine of 14 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.  Andy Thompson completed both his passes for 39 yards and a touchdown.  JJ Ogbogu caught four passes for 44 yards.  Donovan Morris added three receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown.  Chris Thompson caught two passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.  Jaylen Jones caught a 33 yard touchdown pass.  Jack Fagot led the defense with nine solo and six assisted tackles.  Austin Pedroche added seven solo and five assisted tackles.  Eli Mitchell chipped in with four solo and three assisted tackles.  A. Lauterbach added four solo and one assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a 13 yard loss.

Jacob Foley led Garrard County’s ground attack with 136 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries.  Devan Logan carried the ball 21 times for 84 yards.  Slade Crutchfield completed his only pass for 51 yards and a touchdown.  Mike Redmon caught a 51 yard touchdown pass.  Clay Shuey led the defense with five solo and one assisted tackles.  Elwood East added four solo and one assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a five yard loss and recovered a fumble.  D. Morrison recorded three solo and two assisted tackles and intercepted a pass he returned 11 yards.  Devan Logan recorded three solo tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a 12 yard loss.  Colton Barker also recorded three solo tackles.
