Sports Connection 2010 Preseason Hoopfest

November 12-13, 2010

 

This 11th Annual preseason event hosted by the Scott County Lady Cardinals is sponsored byMCKNZ Customz, Mary Meade-McKenzie Attorney at Law, Hometown Pharmacy, and Sports Connection features 11 games over a two day period.  The 22 teams participating are Sayre, Harrison County, Shelby County, Berea, Walton Verona, Cooper, Scott County, South Laurel, Southwestern, Collins, Carroll County, Calvary Christian, Casey County, Dunbar, Elizabethtown, Newport Central Catholic, Beechwood, Williamstown, Owen County, Holmes, Madison Central, and Ballard.

These scrimmages will consist of two 20-minute halves with the clock stopping for free throws.  I will, for the sake of clarity, give scores for each half plus a combined score.  Any stats included are not official but recorded by me personally.  Please understand that these are merely scrimmages, and coaches will be experimenting with substitution rotations and using this event as a teaching tool and to prepare for the upcoming season.

 

Friday November 12th

 

Harrison County  vs.  Sayre

 

Harrison County coach Piper Akin started the following lineup: 5-4 Sr, Tiffany Snider, 5-4 Sr. Pamela Custard, 5-8 Fr. Jordan Doram, 5-5 Jr. Mariah Nichols, and 5-4 Jr. Emalee Little.  Sayre coach Scott Sutton countered with 5-10 Sr. Bea Cameron, 6-0 Jr. Maddie Mitchell, 6-3 8th Gabby Bowie, 5-7 Jr. Sophie O’Rourke, and 5-7 Jr. Emily Culbertson.

Harrison County defeated Sayre by a score of 34-31.  Jordan Doram led Harrison County with 11 points.  Bea Cameron and Gabby Bowie led Sayre with 14 and 10 points respectively.

Berea coach Jerry Bingham started the following lineup: 5-10 Sr. Noah Short, 5-9 So. Levata Swope, 5-10 Jr. Sophia Shearer, 5-5 Sr. Rachel Wilder, and 5-4 Fr. Chase Fain.  Shelby County coach Mike Sowers countered with 5-7 8th Courtney Bravo, 6-0 7th Justus Martin, 5-8 So. Kirstin Dugle, 5-6 So. Lyndsey Nichols, and 5-7 Jr. Hayley Powell.

Berea defeated Shelby County by a score of 54-23.  Levata Swope, Rachel Wilder, and Sophia Shearer led Berea with 15, 12, and 11 points respectively.  Hayley Powell and Justus Martin led Shelby County with seven and five points respectively.

Walton Verona defeated Cooper by a score of 48-19.  5-5 Jr. Katie Slavey led Walton Verona with nine points.  6-0 So. Michele Judy and Kelli Dixon each recorded eight points.  Savannah Brenneman and Adrienne Sandlin led Cooper with five points each.

Scott County defeated South Laurel by a score of 61-44.  Kristen Stainback and Tereka Guyn led Scott County with 15 and 11 points respectively.  Alex McKenzie and 5-8 Jr. Paige Eaton each recorded nine points.  Eaton recorded three three point baskets.  Macy Clontz and Morgan Johnson led South Laurel with 15 and 10 points respectively.

Southwestern  vs.  Collins

 

Southwestern coach M. Fothergill started the following lineup: 5-7 Sr. Danay Fothergill, 5-10 Jr. Hannah Grant, 6-1 Sr. Jessica Pierce, 5-6 8th Adison Corder, and 5-6 8th Destiny Molden.  Collins coach Phil Conder countered with 5-8 Jr. Kelsey Hall, 5-7 Jr. Leeara Caldwell, 5-9 So. Aaliyah Wells, 5-5 So. Chelsea Slaughter, and 5-6 Jr. Rebecca Mouser.

Southwestern defeated Collins by a score of 48-41.  Danay Fothergill led Southwestern with 23 points including four three point baskets.  Jessica Pierce added 13 points.  Aaliyah Wells led Collins with 12 points.  Leeara Caldwell and Rebecca Mouser scored seven points each.

Elizabethtown defeated Newport Central Catholic by a score of 46-31.  Natalie Greenwell and Kaylyn Cecil led Elizabethtown with 18 and 11 points respectively.  Greenwell and Cecil recorded four and three three point baskets respectively.  Hannah Thiem led Newport Central Catholic with 17 points including five three point baskets.

Williamstown defeated Beechwood by a score of 33-29.  Chelsea West and Haley Rothwell led Williamstown with 12 and nine points respectively.  Alison McCarthy led Beechwood with 18 points.

Tamra Holder.  Owen County coach Bob Osborne countered with 5-10 So. Courtney Waldrop, 5-6 Sr. Christina Johnson, 5-11 Sr. Samantha Toole, 5-5 So. Hannah Neeley, and 5-7 Jr. Rianna Gayheart.

This game ended up tied at 31-31.  Holmes won the first half 15-13 and Owen County captured the second half 18-16.  Tamra Holder led Holmes with 17 points including three three point baskets.  Rianna Gayheart led Owen County with 13 points.

Ballard defeated Madison Central by a score of 55-51.  5-7 Jr. Daryius Franklin and 6-3 Sr. Ciera Woods led Ballard with 12 and 10 points respectively.  Jenna Cornelison led Madison Central with 18 points.  Larryn Brooks and Ashton Feldhaus added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Conclusion:

This was an excellent well-run event with attention given to every detail.  It was an excellent opportunity to see 22 teams perform over a two day period.  Scores really doesn’t matter much in scrimmages as coaches did an excellent job of instructing with various rotations.  There was also some excellent play and some teams appeared to be in mid-season form.

Highlands 42  Dixie Heights 28 – Backup QB Donovan McCoy ran for 104 yards and a touchdown to spark the Bluebirds to a comeback victory.  Dixie Heights QB Zeke Pike completed 20 of 25 passes for 271 yards.  Pike also ran for two touchdowns.

Anderson County 42  Bullitt Central 7 – QB Seth Carmichael completed 20 of 25 passes for 307 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.  Carmichael also carried the ball 11 times for 69 yards and a touchdown.  Ethan Kelly carried the ball 13 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns.  Kelly also caught four passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

Ryle 38  Campbell County 14 – Travis Elliott ran for 193 yards and two touchdowns to lead Ryle.

Trinity 48  Manual 13 – QB Travis Wright completed 19 of 27 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Shamrocks.

Simon Kenton 21  Henry Clay 19 – Simon Kenton’s defense stopped Henry Clay on a two point conversion attempt in the closing seconds to preserve the victory.

Henderson County 56  Fern Creek 35 – Conner Berry ran for 266 yards including TD runs of 6, 4, 2, and 75 yards and caught a 29 yard TD pass to lead Henderson County.  Fern Creek’s Jerrell Moore ran for 226 yards including TD runs of 80 and 79 yards.

Lafayette 21  Meade County 20 (OT) – Bubba Johnson carried the ball 22 times for 173 yards and a touchdown to lead the Generals to victory.

Scott County 35  Central Hardin 7 – QB Ben Lawler scored on two one yard runs and threw a two yard TD pass to lead the Cardinals to victory.

Male 42  Graves County 20 – John Denning carried the ball 14 times for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

Anderson County rolled up 579 yards of total offense in a 42-7 victory over Bullitt Central.  Anderson County recorded 28 first downs, was penalized eight times for 63 yards and had two passes intercepted.  Bullitt Central recorded 12 first downs and 247 yards of total offense.  They were penalized six times for 79 yards, lost a fumble, and had three passes intercepted.

Ethan Kelly led Anderson County’s ground game with 152 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.  Seth Carmichael carried the ball 11 times for 69 yards and a touchdown.  Carmichael completed 20 of 25 passes for 307 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.  Matt Sprague caught five passes for 82 yards.  Neal Wells added five receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown.  Ethan Kelly caught four passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns.  Travis Phillips led the defense with five solo and three assisted tackles.  Spencer Ruggles added three solo and four assisted tackles and rcovered a fumble.  Matt Sprague recorded four solo tackles, one assisted tackle, and intercepted two passes.

James Johnson led Bullitt Central’s ground game with 79 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.  Damion Wibbles added 53 yards on 12 carries.  Damion Wibbles completed six of 14 passes for 111 yards with two interceptions.  Dirk Phillips caught three passes for 59 yards.  Nic Bellows led the defense with four solo and nine assisted tackles.  James Joiner added six solo and three assisted tackles and intercepted a pass.  Bradley Combs recorded five solo tackles, two assisted tackles, and intercepted a pass.

Scott County raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead on their way to a 35-7 victory over Central Hardin.  Scott County recorded 19 first downs and 351 yards of total offense.  The Cardinals were penalized nine times for 85 yards.  Central Hardin recorded 12 first downs and 170 yards of total offense.  They were penalized five times for 27 yards and had one pass intercepted.

Marcus Hill led Scott County’s ground game with 98 yards and a touchdown with 12 carries.  Kevo Edwards carried the ball five times for 80 yards and a touchdown.  Ben Lawler completed four of eight passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.  James Happy caught two passes for 18 yards and a touchdown.  Jay Willmott kicked off six times with four touchbacks.  Jordan Kindred led the defense with two solo and five assisted tackles with 2.5 of his tackles resulting in losses totalling six yards.  Justin Thomas added three solo and one assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totalling five yards.

Tristan Long led Central Hardin’s ground game with 41 yards and a touchdown on six carries.  Russ Morse completed eight of 18 passes for 110 yards with one interception.  Jared Cromartie caught three passes for 49 yards.  Tristan Long added three receptions for 33 yards.  Brand. Lafayette defeated Meade County 21-20 in overtime.  Lafayette scored first in overtime on a 10 yard run by Bubba Johnson and a conversion kick by Matt Green to make the score 21-14.  Meade County then took the ball and scored on a one yard run by Max Cundiff to cut the deficit to one; 21-20.  Meade County was stopped short on a two point conversion attempt.

Lafayette recorded 18 first downs and 319 yards of total offense.  The Generals were penalized six times for 63 yards and had a pass intercepted.  Meade County recorded 21 first downs and 319 yards of total offense.  They were penalized once for 25 yards, lost two fumbles, and had two passes intercepted.

Bubba Johnson led Lafayette’s ground game with 173 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries.  Matt Britt completed eight of 17 passes for 67 yards and a touchdown with one interception.  Tanner Napier caught three passes for 25 yards.  Nick Jeter added two receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown.  Shamon Brown led the defense with seven solo and two assisted tackles with three of his tackles resulting in losses totalling six yards.  Kyle Irvin added five solo and three assisted tackles.  Trey Benson recorded four solo tackles, four assisted tackles, and returned a recovered fumble 15 yards for a touchdown.

Simon Kenton’s swarming defense neutralized Henry Clay’s speed as the Pioneers eked out a 21-19 victory over Henry Clay.  Simon Kenton took a 21-7 lead in the third quarter but Henry Clay rallied to pull within two; 21-19 on a 2 yard run by Vinny Miller with 10 seconds left in the game.  Vinny Miller was stopped short on a two point coversion attempt to tie the game.

Simon Kenton recorded 12 first downs and 303 yards of total offense.  The Pioneers were penalized eight times for 59 yards and had two passes intercepted.  Henry Clay recorded 13 first downs and 217 yards of total offense.  The Blue Devils were penalized four times for 39 yards, lost a fumble, and had a pass intercepted.

Chad Lawrence led Simon Kenton’s ground game with 107 yards on 18 carries.  Lawrence completed 12 of 23 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.  Ryan Winkler caught four passes for 72 yards.  DJ Rabe added three receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown.  Trey Pinkelton led the defense with eight solo and one assisted tackles.  Austin Baldwin added six solo and five assisted tackles with four of his tackles resulting in losses totalling 17 yards.

EJ Hayes defeated Morton 22-14 in two overtimes to capture the championship tonight.  The score was tied 6-6 at the end of regulation and both teams scored a touchdown and two point conversion to tie the score at 14-14 and require a second overtime.  EJ Hayes got the ball first and scored on a 10 yard run by Gunner Kelly and a two point conversion run by Joseph Green to take a 22-14 lead.  Morton then had one more chance to tie the game but was stopped on a fourth and goal at the one yard line.

EJ Hayes recorded nine first downs and 164 yards of total offense.  They were penalized four times for 25 yards and had one pass intercepted.  Morton recorded 11 first downs and 246 yards of total offense.  They were penalized eight times for 66 yards and had a pass intercepted.

Adante Carter led EJ Hayes’ ground game with 79 yards and a touchdown on six carries.  Gunner Kelly added 68 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.  Taquan Claiit completed two of three passes for 27 yards and one touchdown with one interception.  John York caught one pass for 17 yards.  Adante Carter caught a 10 yard touchdown pass.  Gunner Kelly led the defense with four solo and seven assisted tackles.  Joseph Green and Jade Johnson each recorded three solo and six assisted tackles.

Raceland  vs.  Williamsburg   (8th Grade Division III Championship)

 

Williamsburg defeated Raceland today by a score of 44-8.  Williamsburg recorded 20 first downs and 538 yards of total offense.  They were penalized 11 times for 125 yards and lost a fumble.  Raceland recorded seven first downs and 131 yards of total offense.  They were penalized four times for 32 yards, lost a fumble, and had two passes intercepted.

Chase Lowrie led Williamsburg’s ground attack with 177 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.  Skyler Griffith carried the ball 11 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns.  Skyler Griffith completed seven of 12 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown.  Corey Shelton caught four passes for 115 yards and one touchdown.  Michael Rose led the defense with six solo tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totalling 18 yards.  Skler Griffith added three solo tackles, three assisted tackles, and returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown.  Corey Shelton recorded four solo tackles with three of his tackles resulting in losses totalling 12 yards and intercepted a pass.

Connor Messer led Raceland’s ground attack with 70 yards and a touchdown on three carries.  Josh Young completed four of six passes for eight yards.  Connor Messer completed three of six passes for 58 yards with two interceptions.  Maverick Dixon caught two passes for 54 yards.  Rodney Vance led the defense with four solo and five assisted tackles.  Austin Howard added five solo and one assisted tackles.

Lexington Catholic  vs.  Corbin  (8th Grade Division II Campionship)

 

Lexington Catholic came into the game with some injuries to their linebackers and Corbin made them pay with their punishing ground attack in a 56-28 victory.  Corbin recorded 18 first downs and 477 yards of total offense with 464 yards of that on the ground.  They were penalized five times for 49 yards.  Lexington Catholic recorded 11 first downs and 348 yards of total offense with 341 yards of that being through the air.  They were penalized twice for 10 yards, lost a fumble, and had two passes intercepted.

Tanner Powers led Corbin’s ground game with 221 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries.  Jeff. Patrick carried the ball 13 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns.  Jake Coppock added 43 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.  Corey Taylor completed one of two passes for 13 yards and a touchdown.  Dalton Anderson caught a 13 yard scoring pass.  Dalton Anderson led the defense with three solo and two assisted tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totalling 10 yards.  Harrison Reedy added three solo and one assisted tackles.  Tanner Powers recorded three solo tackles and two interceptions.

Reese Ryan led Lexington Catholic’s ground attack with 13 yards on seven carries.  Reese Ryan completed 15 of 26 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions.  Sam Letton caught seven passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns.  Jordan Hatton added four receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown.  Jaylen Jones caught three passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.  Braxton Couch led the defense with five solo and three assisted tackles.  Chase Bolin added three solo and five assisted tackles.

Farnsley  vs.  Southern Pulaski  (8th Grade DI Championship)

 

South Pulaski limited Farnsley to 25 offensive plays in an 8-0 victory for the championship.  South Pulaski recorded 10 first downs and 161 yards of total offense.  They were penalized twice for 23 yards and had two passes intercepted.  Farnsley recorded four first down s and 88 yards of total offense.  They were penalized seven times for 46 yards.

Pedro Herrera led Southern Pulaski’s ground game with 75 yards on 18 carries.  Adam Isaacs added 74 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.  Austin Smiddy completed two of five passes for 14 yards.  Chris Lynch caught one pass for nine yards.  Pedro Herrera led the defense with three solo tackles.  Kody Smith added one solo and three assisted tackles.

Delvon Dunn led Farnsley’s ground attack with 38 yards on six carries.  St. Valentine completed one of 10 passes for 29 yards.  Delvon Dunn caught one pass fro 29 yards.  Delvon Dunn led the defense with eight solo and four assisted tackles.  Malik Walker added four solo and four assisted tackles.
