January 31^st Day 5 at the All “A” Classic features both championships and the announcement of both all tournament teams.

Newport Central Catholic (16-2)  vs.  Holy Cross (Louisville)  (20-5) (Girls) (Championship)

Newport Central Catholic coach Ron Dawn started the following lineup: 5-6 Jr. Kiley Bartels, 5-4 Jr. Hannah Thiem, 5-11 Sr. Mariah Tabor, 5-6 Jr. Brittany Fryer, and 5-6 Sr. Courtney Sandfoss.  Holy Cross coach Fred Copass countered with 5-9 Sr. Rachel Richardson, 5-8 Sr. Lindsey Roarx, 6-2 Sr. Olivia Moore, 5-7 Sr. Robin Deckard, and 5-6 So. Kim Mingus.

Newport Central Catholic raced out to a 14-4 first quarter lead in a 56-40 victory over Holy Cross.  The Thoroughbreds defense was the difference today as they scored 24 points off 23 Holy Cross turnovers.  Team balance was another key with four girls reaching double figures and the fifth (Courtney Sandfoss) flawlessly directing the offense and triggering the pressure defense.

Newport Central Catholic shot 46.7% from the field including six of 16 from the three point line.  The Thoroughbreds connected on eight of 17 free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and enjoyed an 18-3 advantage in three point points.  Holy Cross shot 44.7% from the field including one of four from beyond the arc.  The Cougars connected on five of nine free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 11 Newport Central Catholic turnovers.

Hannah Thiem led the victors with 14 points including four three point baskets.  Mariah Tabor added 13 points and seven rebounds.  Brittany Fryer added 12 points and six steals.  Kiley Bartels chipped in with 10 points and five steals.  Courtney Sandfoss recorded seven points, eight assists, and three steals.

Olivia Moore led Holy Cross with 10 points and nine rebounds.  Kim Mingus added nine points.

Shelby Valley  (17-3)  vs.  DeSales  (13-7)  (Boys)  Championship)

Shelby Valley coach Jason Booher started the following lineup: 6-3 Sr. Taylor Newsome, 6-4 Sr. Tyler Newsome, 6-6 Sr. Ashley Hatfield, 6-0 Sr. Cody Varney, and 5-10 Sr. Elisha Justice.  DeSales coach John Mingus countered with 6-4 Jr. Sam Keehner, 6-4 Sr. Brandon Ritchie, 6-6 Sr. Rick Roush, 5-8 Jr. Corbin Maynard, and 6-2 Sr. Derek Thornsberry.

Shelby Valley took a 35-20 lead at halftime and survived a third quarter rally by DeSales to earn a 46-37 victory.  Shelby Valley shot 45% from the field including four of 10 from the three point line.  The Wildcats connected on six of eight free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 12 DeSales turnovers.  DeSales shot 38.1% from the field including three of 17 from beyond the arc.  The Colts connected on two of four free throws, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored nine points off 11 Shelby Valley turnovers.

Tyler Newsome led Shelby Valley with 14 points including two three point baskets.  Taylor Newsome added 12 points.  Ashley Hatfield recorded eight points including two three point baskets and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Rick Roush led DeSales with 10 points and five rebounds.  Derek Thornsberry added eight points including two three point baskets.

Holy Cross (Louisville)  59  Owensboro Catholic  47  (Girls)  (Semifinal) – Holy Cross outscored Owensboro Catholic 16-8 in the second quarter in a 59-47 victory.  Holy Cross held a 39-27 advantage in rebounds and a 12-6 advantage in second chance points.  6-2 Sr. Olivia Moore led the victors with 19 points and seven rebounds.  5-7 Sr. Robin Deckard added 15 points including three three point baskets.  5-8 Sr. Lindsey Roarx recorded 11 points and 13 rebounds.  5-9 Sr. Rachel Richardson dished out nine assists.  5-11 Fr. Becca Greenwell led Owensboro Catholic with 23 points and seven rebounds.  5-6 Sr. Kaley Robertson added 15 points and six rebounds.

Newport Central Catholic  71  Murray  49  (Girls)  (Semifinal) – Newport Central Catholic played an excellent floor game today as they scored 22 points off 23 Murray turnovers and only committed five turnovers.  The Thoroughbreds got off to a quick start as they led Murray 19-8 after the first quarter.  5-4 Jr. Hannah Thiem led the victors with 17 points inclusing three three point baskets.  5-11 Sr. Mariah Tabor added 16 points and six rebounds.  5-6 Jr. Kiley Bartels chipped in with 14 points and seven assists.  5-6 Sr. Courtney Sandfoss recorded 13 points, seven assists, and seven steals.  5-6 Fr. Janssen Starks led Murray with 14 points including two three point baskets.  5-9 So. Haley Armstrong added 12 points and six rebounds.

DeSales  67  Glasgow  58  OT  (Boys)  (Semifinal) – DeSales outscored Glasgow 14-5 in overtime to earn the victory.  DeSales held a 25-12 advantage in free throw points and a 24-6 advantage in three point points.  Glasgow enjoyed a 42-34 margin in rebounds and a 21-9 advantage in second chance points.  6-2 Sr. Derek Thornsberry and 6-4 Sr. Brandon Ritchie led DeSales with 20 and 17 points respectively.  6-1 Sr. Cameron Hall led Glasgow with 33 points.  6-0 Jr. Kerrington Bradley added 15 points and nine rebounds.  6-2 Jr. Michael Bradley pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Shelby Valley  67  University Heights  54  (Boys)  (Semifinal) – Shelby Valley outscored University Heights 21-12 in the final quarter to pull away for the victory.  5-10 Sr. Elisha Justice led Shelby Valley with 25 points.  6-6 Sr. Ashley Hatfield added 18 points and 10 rebounds.  6-4 Sr. Tyler Newsome chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds.  6-0 Jr. Matt McGowan led University Heights with 24 points.  6-3 Jr. Ryan Hudson added 18 points including three three point baskets and pulled down eight rebounds.

Glasgow  58  Walton-Verona  44 – The score was tied 37-37 at the end of three quarters but Glasgow outscored Walton-Verona 21-7 in the final quarter to earn the victory.  6-1 Sr. Cameron Hall led Glasgow with 21 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and four steals.  5-10 Sr. Dean Glass added 15 points.  5-11 Sr. Brandon Bowlin led Walton-Verona with 13 points including four three point baskets.  5-10 Sr. Jordan Ponzer and 6-8 Sr. Camron Burns added 12 and 10 points respectively.

DeSales  56  Hazard  52  (OT) – 6-4 Sr. Brandon Ritchie led DeSales with 15 points and eight rebounds.  6-0 Sr. Corum Sanford added 14 points and seven rebounds.  6-0 Sr. Josh Whitaker led Hazard with 13 points and five rebounds.  5-10 Jr. Eric Back added 11 points including three three point baskets.  6-2 So. B.J. Combs chipped in with 10 points.

University Heights  55  Owensboro Catholic  50  -  University Heights trailed 34-32 entering the final quarter but rallied for a 55-50 victory over Owensboro Catholic.  6-0 Jr. Matt mcGowan and 6-3 Jr. Ryan Hudson led the victors with 16 and 14 points respectively.  6-5 Jr. Tiberius Smith recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.  6-3 Sr. Neil Lanham led Owensboro Catholic with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Shelby Valley  80  Danville  56 – 5-10 Sr. Elisha Justice led the victors with 19 points.  6-4 Sr. Tyler Newsome added 16 points and five assists.  6-6 Sr. Ashley Hatfield recorded 15 points including three three point baskets and pulled down six rebounds.  6-3 Sr. Taylor Newsome chipped in with 15 points and six rebounds.  5-8 Jr. Jacody Taylor led Danville with 21 points including four three point baskets.  5-11 Sr. Duran Elmore added 14 points.

Holy Cross (Louisville)  61  Harlan 32 (Quarterfinal) – Holy Cross took an 18-4 first quarter lead and scored 27 points off 28 Harlan turnovers in a decisive victory today.  5-7 Sr. Robin Deckard led Holy Cross with 21 points including five three point baskets.  5-6 So. Kim Mingus also recorded 21 points including two three point baskets.  6-2 So. Ashley Mullins led Harlan with 10 points.  6-1 Sr. Anne Corey Johnson added nine points and eight rebounds.

Owensboro Catholic  57  Lexington Christian Academy  55  (Quarterfinal) – Owensboro Catholic trailed 40-36 entering the final quarter but rallied for the victory.  Becca Greenwell found teammate Mary Kate Clemens under the basket for a layup in the closing seconds for the victory.  5-11 Fr. Becca Greenwell led the victors with 26 points, 14 rebounds, four assists,and five steals.  5-11 So. Mary Kate Clemens added 13 points and six rebounds.  5-6 Sr. Kaley Robertson chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.  6-2 Sr. Sarah Beth Barnette led LCA with 30 points including four three point baskets.  Barnette pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked four shots.  5-7 8^th grader Katelin Bundy added nine points.

Newport Central Catholic 51  Green County  35  (Quarterfinal) – NCC led 23-21 at halftime but pulled away in the second half for the victory.  NCC scored 25 points off 33 Green County turnovers.  5-6 Sr. Courtney Sandfoss led the victors with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals.  5-11 Sr. Mariah Tabor also recorded 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds.  5-8 So. Micah Jones led Green County with nine points and 11 rebounds.  5-11 Sr. Chelsea Mitchell added eight points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots.

Murray  55  Walton-Verona 33  (Quarterfinal) – Murray outscored Walton-Verona 16-0 in the third quarter to gain control  of the game.  5-9 So. Haley Armstrong led Murray with 16 points and seven rebounds.  5-6 Fr. Janssen Starks added 12 points including two three point baskets.  6-2 Jr. Sian House recorded 13 points and seven rebounds.  5-11 Jr. Kelli Dixon led Walton-Verona with 10 points.

Glasgow  65  Campbellsville  59 – 6-1 Sr. Cameron Hall led Glasgow with 34 points including 17 of 17 free throws.  6-2 Jr. Michael Bradley added 12 points and eight rebounds.  6-0 Jr. Kerrington Bradley chipped in with 11 points.  6-2 Sr. Bryton Taylor led Campbellsville with 20 points.  6-6 Jr. Jordan Percell, 6-3 Sr. Thomas Down, and 6-8 Sr. Aaron Schwoebel added 12, 10, and 10 points respectively.  Down pulled down 12 rebounds.

Walton-Verona  60  Brown  45 – 5-10 Sr. Jordan Ponzer, 6-8 Sr. Cameron Burns, and 5-11 Jr. Vance Sullivan led the victors with 12, 11, and 10 points respectively.  Burns pulled down nine rebounds.  6-3 Sr. Tristan Hicks led Brown with 26 points and seven rebounds.

DeSales  60  Newport  57 – 6-4 Sr. Brandon Ritchie, 6-2 Sr. Derek Thornsberry, and 5-8 Jr. Corbin Maynard led DeSales with 15, 13, and 10 points respectively.  6-5 Sr. Casey McDaniel led Newport with 22 points including four three point baskets.  5-8 Jr. Travis Jones and 6-3 Sr. Demarkco Foster added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Hazard  63  Bishop Brossart 60 – Hazard outscored Bishop Brossart 21-16 in the final quarter to earn the victory.  6-0 Sr. Josh Whitaker led Hazard with 20 points.  6-2 So. B.J. Combs added 18 points and eight rebounds.  6-4 Sr. Jacob Rieger led Bishop Brossart with 27 points and seven rebounds.  5-11 Sr. Jordan Armstrong and 6-0 Fr. Justin Saunders added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Harlan 62 Whitefield Academy 47 – Harlan shot 50% from the field in an opening round victory over Whitefield Academy.  5-7 Sr. Sarah Scruggs led Harlan with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals.  6-2 So. Ashley Mullins added 15 points and six rebounds.  5-5 Sr. Cheyenne Hamblin chipped in with 12 points.  6-1 Sr. Ann Corey Johnson recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds.  5-5 Sr. Brooke Willett led Whitefield Academy with 17 points including three three point baskets.  5-6 Sr. Abigail Halleron added 13 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals.

Holy Cross (Louisville)  67  Betsy Layne  53 – Holy Cross trailed 44-43 entering the final period but outscored Betdy Layne 24-9 in the final period to earn the victory.  6-2 Sr. Olivia Moore led the victors with 21 points and 12 rebounds.  5-6 So. Kim Mingus added 17 points and 5-8 Sr. Lindsey Roarx chipped in with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  5-8 Jr. Taylor Hott led Betsy Layne with 19 points.  5-7 Sr. Lindsey Martin and 5-6 Sr. Megan Hamilton added 14 and 11 points respectively with each recording three three point baskets.

Lexington Christian Academy  69  Russell 42 – LCA scored 30 points off 33 Russell turnovers in their victory.  6-2 Sr. Sarah Beth Barnette led LCA with 18 points, 15 rebounds, and four steals.  5-5 Jr. Rachel Cox added 15 points including three three point baskets.  5-11 Jr. Kelli Rinehart and 5-7 8^th grader Katelin Bundy added 10 points each.  5-4 Sr. Sarah Hanson led Russell with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Owensboro Catholic  59  Bracken County  57 – Owensboro Catholic held a 50-38 lead in the fourth quarter and held on for the close victory.  5-11 Fr. Becca Greenwell led the victors with 34 points and 11 rebounds.  5-6 Sr. Kaley Robertson added 18 points and seven rebounds.  6-0 Sr. Hannah Haight led Bracken County with 20 points and six rebounds.  5-5 Sr. Katelyn Meyer and 5-7 Sr. Brittany Burden added 15 and 10 points respectively.

Newport Central Catholic  62  Caldwell  32 – Newport Central Catholic pulled away in the second half for the victiry.  Newport Central Catholic scored 30 points off 28 Caldwell County turnovers.  5-11 Sr. Mariah Tabor and 5-6 Jr. Kiley Bartels led the victors with 12 and 10 points respectively. 5-6 Sr. Courtney Sandfoss recorded six points, six assists, and seven steals.  6-1 Jr. Casey Stone led Caldwell County with 12 points.  5-11 Sr. Emily Meeks added nine points and eight rebounds.

Green County  59  Somerset  45  -  Green County trailed 24-22 at halftime but rallied to defeat Somerset.  Green County scored 25 points off 24 Somerset turnovers.  5-11 Sr. Kelsey Mitchell led Green County with 20 points, eight rebounds, and nine blocked shots.  5-8 So. Micah Jones added 11 points, five rebounds, six assists, and four steals.  5-8 Fr. Rachel Marr chipped in with 10 points.  5-6 Sr. Rolisa Jones led Somerset with 12 points and nine rebounds.  5-8 Sr. Samantha Dorsey added nine points on three three point baskets.

Murray 61  Glasgow  30 – Murray outscored Glasgow 37-13 in the second half.  5-9 So. Haley Armstrong led Murray with 15 points.  5-6 Fr. This event  was held January 22-24, 2010 at the Kentucky Basketball Academy in Lexington, KY.  Forty teams were scheduled to play in this event with a play-in game scheduled for Friday night with the tournament play starting on Saturday morning.  I will have a complete write-up on my website at a later date.  I will give a brief recap on the last sixteen teams and any statistics mentioned here came from the scoresheets at the KBA.

Saturday January 23^rd Round of Sixteen

Elkhorn 55  Scott County 36 – Trey Farmer and DeShawn Newton led Elkhorn with 18 and 17 points respectively.  Newton recorded three three point baskets.  Keith Guy and Jalen Jenkins led Scott County with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Mercer County 46  Lincoln County 31 – Drew Davis led Mercer County with 16 points.  Wade Goode led Lincoln County with 12 points.

McNabb 47  Hazard 38 – Cody Parsley led McNabb with 16 points.  Shelby Combs and Art Walker added nine points each.  Cade Fletcher led Hazard with 10 points.

Adair County 48  Beaumont 30 – Chance Melton led Adair County with 28 points.  Carson Hill led Beaumont with 13 points including three three point baskets.

Elkhorn 47  Mercer County 36 (Quarterfinal) – Trey Farmer led Elkhorn with 25 points while Mercer County was paced by Drew Davis with 22 points.

Adair County 40  McNabb 26 (Quarterfinal) – Chance Melton led Adair County with 22 points.  Kel Stotts added 15 points including three three point baskets.  Art Walker and Cody Parsley led McNabb with 11 and nine points respectively.

RW Combs 46  Crosby 29 (Quarterfinal)  – Braxton Beverly led the victors with 28 points.  Jailen Reed  and Omari Alexander led Crosby with 10 and seven points respectively.

Kammerer won Shelby West forfeit (Quarterfinal)

Adair County 29  Elkhorn 27 (Semifinal) – Kel Stotts led Adair County with 13 points including three three point baskets.  Chance Melton added 11 points.  Trey Farmer and Jacob Cook led Elkhorn with 10 and seven points respectively.

Kammerer 67  RW Combs 46 (Semifinal) – Malik Dow led Kammerer with 24 points.  Mike Harris, Brandon Wells, and Zach Marcy added 14, 13, and 11 points respectively.  Marcy recorded three three point baskets.  Braxton Beverly led RW Combs with 35 points.

Kammerer 47  Adair County 37 (Championship) – Kammerer trailed 32-30 after three quarters but rallied in the final quarter to outscore Adair County 17-5 in the final quarter to earn a 47-37 victory and the championship.  Kammerer was widely regarded as the favorite to capture this event but Adair County came out determined and actually had Kammerer on the ropes with the lead and Kammerer’s 6-2 Malik Dow saddled with four personal fouls.  However Kammerer battled back and finally took control late in the game.  Malik Dow and Brandon Wells led the victors with 13 and 11 points respectively.  Kel Stotts led Adair County with 21 points.  Chance Melton added 11 points.

This was an excellent well run event with a lot of individual talent and some excellent teams.  I will address some of these teams and players in a later write-up but the future of hoops in Kentucky appears bright.

Note; Adair County entered this game with a 30-0 record while Kammerer was 32-2 with their only losses coming against 8^th grade teams.

Assumption coach Ron Ferch started the following lineup: 6-0 Sr. Molly Ernst, 5-9 Jr. Maggie Hartlage, 5-10 So. Morgan Foley, 5-7 Sr. Kayla McMahon, and 5-9 Sr. Sara Minogue.  Sacred Heart Academy coach Donna Moir countered with 5-11 Jr. Annamarie Campbell, 5-9 Sr. Mary Gordon Stough, 5-10 Jr. Morgan Clemons, 5-4 Jr. Maddie Peabody, and 5-5 Jr. Hannah Washle.

Sacred Heart led 26-18 at halftime but Assumption rallied in the second half for a 40-34 victory.  Sacred Heart shot 9,52%  (2-21) from the field in the second half and only scored eight points after halftime.

Assumption shot 34.9% from the field including zero of 11 from the three point line.  The Rockets connected on 10 of 13 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 17 Sacred Heart turnovers.  Sacred heart shot 26.8% from the field including two of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Valkyries connected on 10 of 16 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 16 Assumption turnovers.

Maggie Hartlage and Molly Ernst led Assumption with nine and eight points respectively.  Kayla McMahon added six points.

Hannah Washle led Sacred Heart wih 10 points and seven rebounds.  Maddie Peabody added 10 points, five rebounds, and four steals.

Scott County coach Billy Hicks started the lineup: 6-5 Jr. Tanner Shotwell, 6-3 So. Tamron Manning, 6-8 Sr. Dakotah Euton, 6-3 Sr. Austin Flannery, and 6-4 Sr. Chad Jackson.  McCreary Central coach Robert Jones countered with 6-4 Sr. Tyler Perry, 6-0 Sr. Zack Roark, 6-4 Sr. Sean Privett, 6-2 Sr. Aaron Watts, and 5-8 Sr. Ben Wright.

The score was tied 15-15 after the first quarter but Scott County outscored McCreary Central 18-9 in the second quarter on their way to a 65-49 victory.  Scott County shot 38.3% from the field including five of 14 from the three point line.  The Cardinals connected on 14 of 18 free throws, pulled down 44 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 15 McCreary Central turnovers.  McCreary Central shot 30.2% from the field including five of 16 from beyond the arc,  The Raiders connected on 18 of 33 free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 12 Scott County turnovers.

Chad Jackson led Scott County with 21 points and nine rebounds.  Dakotah Euton added 16 points and 12 rebounds.  Austin Flannery chipped in with 12 points.

Aaron Watts led McCreary Central with 26 points including four three point baskets.  Watts was 10 of 13 from the free throw line.  Watts pulled down 10 rebounds.  6-5 Jr. Jacob Dixon added eight points and seven rebounds.  Zack Roark and 6-3 Fr. Tyson Williams chipped in with seven points each.

This was an excellent road win for the Cardinals over a good McCreary Central team who has notched some impressive wins over quality competition this season.

Lincoln County held a 33-6 advantage in three point points in a 48-42 victory over Elizabethtown.  Lincoln County shot 39.3% (11-28) from the three point line while Elizabethtown only managed 9.52% (2-21) from beyond the arc.

Lincoln County shot 32 % from the field.  The Lady Patriots connected on five of seven free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 17 Elizabethtown turnovers.  Elizabethtown shot 31.3% from the field.  The Lady Panthers connected on 10 of 15 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 13 Lincoln County turnovers.

Nikki Bustle led Lincoln County with 21 points on seven three point baskets and pulled down seven rebounds.  Jessica Upchurch added seven points.  Emily Fox and Kendra Brown chipped in with six points each.

Adelaide Luckett led Elizabethtown with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Natalie Greenwell added 11 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.
