Eastern Kentucky University coach Jeff Neubauer started the following lineup: 6-7 Sr. Timmy Knipp, 6-7 Jr. Ja’Mill Powell, 6-8 Sr. Eric Stutz, 6-2 Sr. Corey Walden, and 6-2 So. Isaac McGlone. Southern Utah coach Nick Robinson countered with 6-7 Jr. Christian Thompson, 6-6 Jr. AJ Hess, 6-8 Jr. Casey Oliverson, 6-1 So. John Marshall, and 6-3 So. Juwan Major.
Eastern Kentucky University trailed 34-31 at halftime and fell behind 42-34 in the second half but rallied behind a three point barrage to defeat Southern Utah by a score of 73-64. There were three lead changes and three ties in this game. Eastern Kentucky shot 36.1% from the field including 10 of 30 from the three point line. The Colonels connected on 19 of 23 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 18 Southern Utah turnovers. Southern Utah shot 42.3% from the field including six of 19 from beyond the arc. The Thunderbirds connected on 14 of 20 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 11 Eastern Kentucky turnovers.
Corey Walden led Eastern Kentucky with 33 points including five three point baskets. Timmy Knipp added 13 points including three three point baskets all after the intermission and pulled down six rebounds. Eric Stutz pulled down 11 rebounds.
AJ Hess led Southern Utah with 15 points including two three point baskets, five rebounds, and three steals. 6-2 Fr. James McGee added 14 points including four three point baskets. 6-9 Fr. Tyler Rawson recorded 13 points on four of four from the field and five of eight free throws.
