The 16th Annual Rick Bolus’ High Potential®
Basketball Showcase Mini-Camp

June 28-29, 2013
Georgetown, KY

©2013 by Ron Harrison

INTRODUCTION

The 16th Annual Rick Bolus’ High Potential® Basketball Showcase Mini-Camp (Girls) was held in Georgetown, Kentucky at Georgetown College.  This year's camp also included a junior division.

The camp director for this camp was Rick Bolus with forty years experience in the basketball business.    Rick Bolus started the Rick Bolus High Potential® Basketball Recruiting Service in 1973.  Mr. Bolus’ newsletters not only reach the desks of numerous college coaches nationwide, but also several all-star game directors.  He has also coached girls' basketball, conducted girls' camps, and ran women's coaching clinics over the years.

A camp report will be made available via internet to almost 2,000 women’s basketball college coaches in the United States in early August.  The camp features speakers on recruiting, academics, and basketball.  Each player participates in at least five games over the two-day period.  All players receive equal playing time as substitutions are done by the clock.  There are fundamentals stations, team practice sessions, optional competition contests, and a written evaluation from the camper's league coach.  The camp director is at camp both days observing each player's performance daily.  A doctor is on call at all times and a certified trainer is at camp around the clock.

There were one hundred thirty four players present at this camp.  There were players from Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, California, Tennessee, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Missouri, and Wisconsin. They were placed into three divisions, the North and South divisions were the high school divisions and there was also a junior division.  The North Division consisted of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, and Missouri.  The championship in this division will be determined by a round-robin tournament.  The South Division consisted of North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Tennessee.  These four teams will play three exhibition games and then a tournament to determine the champion.  The Junior Division consisted of Wyoming, Vermont, and West Virginia with the championship being determined by the best winning percentage.  The following is a list of players plus team designations.

The Rick Bolus' High Potential® “Blue-Chip” Basketball Camp® is not affiliated with any other basketball camp using the names “High Potential;” or “Blue-Chip”.

SUMMARY

The Junior Division continues to be popular with a lot of promising young talent.  5-9 8th grader Caylynn Brewer Sacred Heart Middle Louisville, KY was named Camp MVP of the Junior Division.  5-6 7th Grader Jewel Smalls North Western Alpharetta, GA was named Camp Runner-Up MVP.  5-5 8th grader Abigail Mills Knox Central Barbourville, KY was named top shooter and 4-11 6th grader Haley Parks Millard Middle Shelbiana, KY was named Top Underclassman.

The Camp MVP for the High School Division was 6-1 Sr. Sarah Cooley Lafayette Lexington, KY.  Cooley is an active inside player capable of recording a double-double (points and rebounds) every game and has rapidly improving perimeter skills.  5-4 Sr. Chelsea Rhodes Milwaukee Pulaski Milwaukee, WI, a dynamic guard was named Camp Runner-Up MVP.  6-0 Jr. Sandra Skinner Clark County Winchester, KY was named Top Underclassman and is considered an excellent D-1 prospect.  5-9 Jr. Adison Corder Southwestern Somerset, KY has downtown range on her jump shot and 6-2 Sr. Brooke Todd Paul Dunbar Lexington, KY is a rapidly improving inside player.

5-7 So. Lauren McBryar Mooresville Mooresville, IN and 5-7 So. Aryn Sanders Signal Mountain Signal Mountain, TN both in the words of camp director Rick Bolus “have game.”  Expect good seasons from 5-8 So. Kaci Currens Anderson County Lawrenceburg, KY and 5-5 Jr. Heidi Huffman Mercer County Harrodsburg, KY.  5-11 So Samantha Fitzgerald Southwestern Somerset, KY is a versatile scorer with good size and 5-10 Sr. Virginia Scott Somerset Somerset, KY is a good wing shooter.  5-8 Sr. Madison Raque Eastern Louisville, KY is an excellent scorer.  5-8 Jr. Darien Huff Elizabethtown Elizabethtown, KY should have an excellent season for a very good Elizabethtown team this season.

There are several other players (to many to mention here) from Kentucky and other states that impressed this week and could be key contributors at the varsity level.  Several of these young ladies will get their opportunities due to both player graduation and improvement over the summer and several will make a name for themselves during this season.

CONCLUSION

As mentioned before, a full camp report will be made available to almost 2,000 women’s basketball college coaches in early August by the camp director.  While the staff was well pleased with this year’s camp, every effort will be made to improve the camp to make future versions even better.
